Week 2 NFL picks

Here are my Week 2 picks. This is hard to do. I bet some of you could do better than me, so leave your picks in the comment section.

To read my Lions-49ers prediction, click here.

Chiefs @ Bills: Chiefs. Kansas City WR Dwayne Bowe will score at least two touchdowns on Buffalo’s rookie CB Stephon Gilmore.

Browns @ Bengals: Bengals: The Ravens embarrassed the Bengals Week 1, winning 44-13. Cincinnati will bounce back big time against the Browns – one of the worst teams in the league.

Vikings @ Colts: Colts. Andrew Luck will pick apart Minnesota’s subpar secondary.

Raiders @ Dolphins: Raiders. Carson’s Palmer’s favorite receiver – Denarius Moore – will play, and he’ll be the difference.

Cardinals @ Patriots: Patriots. New England’s offense is better than Arizona’s defense, and New England’s defense is better than Arizona’s offense.

Buccaneers @ Giants: Giants. The Giants are too good to start the season 0-2.

Ravens @ Eagles: Ravens. The Eagles starting wide receivers – DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin – are nicked up and questionable to play. Philadelphia would need those players 100 percent healthy to beat the Ravens, who are still a top-5 team.

Saints @ Panthers: Saints. Like the Giants, the Saints are too good to start the season 0-2.

Texans @ Jaguars: Texans. Houston will score 40 points and win easily.

Redskins @ Rams: Redskins. The Rams could have drafted Robert Griffin III, but they liked the QB they already had – Sam Bradford – so they traded the No.2 pick to Washington. That was a mistake for St. Louis, because Griffin is already better than Bradford. Griffin will start his professional career 2-0.

Cowboys @ Seahawks: Cowboys. Dallas is one of the best, most complete teams in the NFC. The Seahawks have a very good defense, but their offense will struggle to score points, even at home.

Jets @ Steelers: Steelers. Another bounce-back game. The Broncos embarrassed the Steelers on Monday Night Football Week 1, so Pittsburgh will embarrass the Jets Week 2.

Titans @ Chargers: Chargers. Tennessee’s QB – Jake Locker – has a hurt shoulder, and their running back – Chris Johnson – looked terrible last week (11 carries for 4 yards). They won’t beat the Chargers in San Diego.

Broncos @ Falcons: Broncos. Neither team can run the ball well. The Broncos have the better QB and the better pass rush, so they’ll win.

I’ve got proof that I cant do much better. /sigh

    • I.P. Daily says:

      Well then call ‘em dude…

      • Coffee's for closers says:

        Huh?

      • Coffee's for closers says:

GC said : “The Giants are too good to start the season 0-2.” & “Like the Giants, the Saints are too good to start the season 0-2.”

OK, I realize that maybe you might have other things going on or maybe this was just something to kill the time but if you cant spend more then 20 seconds to come up with a reason why a team will win other then because they’re too good to go 0-2 then just don’t bother making the list. It’s bad enough you did it once but then to repeat it, especially for two teams that it would hardly be difficult to actually describe why they have a chance to win the game is just plain lazy.

    • Chris says:

I am not going to bash anyone’s picks this week. I think there were some big surprises, but I did want to point out that what looked like a very tough schedule for SF is starting to look like it is easier than it first appeared. NO 0-2. NE 1-1 and unable to handle a physical opponent, BUF 1-1.

  2. Jack Hammer says:

Grant, you should join us over at Alex Smith’s Tea Party.

  3. DS94everXev says:

    Grant

The Chargers won last week because they played the Raiders. Were they any good at all, they’d have blown them out.

    • Grant Cohn says:

So you think the Titans will beat them? Why?

      • DS94everXev says:

After playing the Raiders, they will have to face an NFL team this week.

The Chargers time has run out. The AFC West was horrible last year. They couldn’t win it.

Now the AFC west opened up 1-3. And they won by default. Unless the Titans imitate the Raiders (4 failed punts), they have nothing on teams.

My reason has more to do with the Chargers not playing well to start seasons/last year/last week than anything the Titans can do. I don’t know much about them.

      • DS94everXev says:

Remember a few years ago, everybody talked how great Chris Johnson (Titan RB) is. How 2,000 yards was going to be easy for him?

My how things change. He believed his own hype.

    • Timster says:

Titans are pretty beat up…. I doubt they win that game.

  4. Timster says:

    No Niner game prediction?

    What a jip

  5. big niner says:

Chiefs, bengals, colts, dolphins, patriots, buccaneers, ravens, panthers, texans, redskins, seahawks, steelers, titans, falcons.
The Raiders stink in Miami, even if miami sucks. Tampa has a good Defense. cam newton and deangelo williams go off in this game and NO is 0-2. Romo doesn’t shake his Seattle nightmare…. Titans will be a harder challenge than oakland, even if its on the road.. The falcons at home in that dome will expose Denvers running game.

  6. Jack Hammer says:

    Panthers will beat the Saints

    • Grant Cohn says:

      Why?

      • Jack Hammer says:

Newton is better than RGIII, and the energy of this being their home opener will help them jump out front early. The Saints are not the same team without Payton.

      • Grant Cohn says:

But the Redskins’ defense is better than the Panthers’ defense.
You don’t think Steve Smith’s knee injury will slow him down a bit?

      • Prime Time says:

Really? That’s why? Stick to pee wee football Hack, the NFL is too big for you.

      • Jack Hammer says:

It might, but Newton’s running will pick up the slack.

What do you make of Cal/Ohio St. Is Cal that good or OSU that overrated?

      • Grant Cohn says:

Ohio State is overrated. UCLA is going to beat Cal in a few weeks.

      • Jack Hammer says:

No argument here. They might easily be 9-2 heading into the finale. 9-3 and a Sun Bowl berth?

      • Grant Cohn says:

I’d take it, but I don’t see why UCLA can’t beat Arizona and Stanford.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jack, CN won’t fully utilize his talent until he learns to play from the pocket. He needs to lower his TD/INT ratio before I put him in the top third of the QBs in the league. RG3 seems to play well from the pocket, but it’s only been one regular season game – let the season play out. I see the Saints winning by two touchdowns over the Panthers.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Hofer,

Your dislike of running QB’s is well documented, as are the struggles of Steve Spagnulo’s defenses early on as the players learn the system. Newton’s running may not win a championship but it will be enough to help put NO 0-2 this week.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jack, I really appreciated and loved to watch SYoung play especially after he learned that teams win when their QBs play well from the pocket. My fear with running QBs is injury or turnovers. That’s what was interesting listening to SY on the “TTebow A Football Life” program, he basically advised TT to learn how to play from the pocket if he had any hopes of playing QB at a high level in the NFL. Others should listen as well.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Hofer, NO by 2 TD’s huh? Like I said, the Saints are not the same team without Payton.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jack, not a big deal – my other picks Buff and Mia won. BTW, N.O. wins that game if their DB can catch an INT. I’m still not impressed with the Panthers.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Hofer,

Yeah if the NE kicker doesn’t shank the FG I win that one too. Oh well, if if’s and but’s were candy and nuts, we’d all have a Merry Christmas ; )

I’m not a big Panther believer either, but my hunch played out for today.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jack, if you watched the game there was a swing of 14 pts. The poor pass/INT by DBrees (that’s right the elite one) at his own goal line for a Panther td and the missed INT by PRobinson. Only one game, but they blew my pick. LOL

      • DS94everXev says:

If, if, if, if, if, if, if, if

There are a lot of if’s. Try to kep it to did’s.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Hofer,

I didn’t get to see the game. Hope you know I am just robbing you. Good times. Only 2 hours to kick off. Can’t wait!

    • Prime Time says:

Cause Mr.Know it all, Hall of Fame coach said so Grant! C’mon man!

  7. AES* says:

For anyone interested. Last years 49er vs Lions game on now at NFL Network.

    • Johnny Christo says:

Forgot how stout Lions D played last season. Also noticed that Niners ran very few downfield plays. If Smith/G-Ro sync like last week, this years game shouldnt be close.

  8. Hoferfan67 says:

    GC here’s where we differ:

    Bills win
*Vikings win in a close one
*Dolphins win in a close one
+Rams win and surprise the skins
    *Seahawks win
Falcons win by 3 at home.

    * Upset this week
    + Mini-upset (too much RG3 hype)

    All others I agree.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Patriots, Ravens, and Saints lost. :/
      Bills won.
Vikes lost in a close one. :(
      Dolphins won.
Rams winning in a close one.
      Seattle blowing out Dallas.
      Pitt and SD winning.
      Falcons tomorrow night.

      • Crab15 says:

        Hoooooofffffeeeee!! Get Alex fired up!!
        Vino time. :-)

      • Hoferfan67 says:

CCCCrrrraaaaaabbbbbbb! I’ve got my Amstel and New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc on ice. Big game – all of these upsets are making me nervous…no! 9ers win!!! Come on…let’s go!

  9. Johnny Christo says:

    Here’s a take on a few games:

    Vikings at Colts: Vikings.
Do not overestimate the Colts OLine, nor underestimate the force of Jared Allen. Luck is not so different from Alex Smith. He’ll be wanting Jim Harbaugh back more than any Niner fan will want him, before long.

    Saints at Panthers: Panthers.
If Harbaugh teaches us anything, it’s that the value of in-game coaching at the NFL level cannot be overstated. Sorry, Drew, but you’re no Peyton, and without Payton you’re not really Breesy. Cam Newton, at home, takes the Saints apart, just like the Droid did last week.

    Cowboys at Seahawks: Seahawks.
    Romo
    Broncos at Falcons: Falcons.

  10. Johnny Christo says:

    Cowboys at Seahawks: Seahawks.
Let’s see, who is Romo like? He’s a bit of a Hasselbeck, a bit DeBerg: frustratingly satisfactory but never gonna be a winner. Cowboys go to the CLink and Romo reminds us all why we’re so thankful that he plays for the Cowboys.

    Broncos at Falcons: Falcons
Peyton Manning? Yeah, he’s still alright, but he’s not marching into the Falcons house and showing up Ryan Jones White Gonzales etc… This one is pure home field advantage.

  11. msclemons67 says:

Dallas @ Seattle: At home Seattle is 1 game over .500 over the last 3 seasons. Their home-field advantage is a myth. Dallas’ defense looks like the real deal.

Saints @ Panthers: Without Payton the Saints just aren’t the same. Without bounties the Saints’ defense is horrible. Spagnolu brought his defense over from St. Louis and it’s just as bad in New Orleans.

Chiefs @ Bills: The Chiefs weren’t prepared for the Falcons’ no-huddle offense. The Bills weren’t prepared for professional football.

Browns @ Bengals: The Eagles tried desperately to let the Browns win but Weeden (5.1 passer rating) wouldn’t allow it. The Battle of Ohio should be very, very boring.

Vikings @ Colts: The Colts cannot stop the run. They cannot stop the pass. They cannot stop Jim Irsay’s drunken tweets.

Houston @ South Jacksonville High School: The Jags defense isn’t horrible and this game will be closer than the spread. But even Khan’s amazing mustache can’t stop Adrian Foster and a healthy (so far) Shaub and Johnson.

Oakland @ Miami: I always take the home team on a short week. It’s a 60% win. Plus – I used my Oujia board to talk to Zombie Al.

Tampa Bay @ New Jersey: The Giants are .500 team. They’ll end the week at 1-1. Unless Aqib’s mom shoots Victor Cruz.

Cardinals @ Patriots: The Evil Empire hit two home runs in the draft and revamped their defense. The Cardinals ignored glaring holes on the offensive line and drafted a possession receiver. Cards’ defense isn’t horrible but it’s no match for Tom Brady. And Kevin Kolb – bwahahaha!

Redskins @ Rams: The Redskins pistol offense won’t be as effective against the Rams but they’ll still win. The difference will be the Redskins’ defense – it’s better than you think.

New Jersey Circus @ Pittsburgh Retirement Home: The senior citizen Steelers will eek out a close win over the Jets. Does anyone think Mark Sanchez can play that well twice in a row? He probably banged three 17 year olds this week and is tired.

Titans @ Chargers: CJ½K looks bad. The Titans’ D is a work in progress. The Chargers are coached by Norv. This is a tossup decided by home field advantage. I have faith in both Chargers fans to help sway the game.

Ravens @ Dream Team: The Eagles almost lost to the Browns who had a 5.1 rated QB. The Ravens destroyed a decent Cincinnati team. Plus, the Ravens have a Harbaugh. The Eagles have a man who forgets the running game after his 5th hot dog.

Broncos @ Falcons: Unlike the Seahawks, the Falcons have a real home field advantage. The Broncos D won’t be able to keep up with Ryan’s no-huddle in the dome. But Peyton Manning is magic on Monday nights. This pick could bite me in the arse.

I picked the 49ers on an earlier thread and the Packers in the Tea Party group (always take the home team on a short week).

  12. Brotha Tuna says:

Falcons have more offensive weapons & better offensive balance.
    Broncos have better D, imo.
Falcons missing Grimes, key db, when facing Manning.
I see this one pretty closely matched. Maybe home field is the difference.

  13. Neal says:

All I got to say about Lions, tired of them being a national disgrace, on my favorite holiday every freakin year, this has got to stop. we need new teams to play the turkey bowl.

  14. elGuapo says:

Hey, Grant! Do you ‘memer me, a while back, telling you RGIII will have a better rookie season than Luck? In that convo I stated that RGIII seems to be sourounded by better weapons and last Sunday kinda proved my hypothesis … *ahem** … excuse me, hypotenuse, correct. I know it’s only been one game, but do you still see Luck having a better rookie season than RGIII?

    • Brotha Tuna says:

hypotenuse? Let’s keep it clean on here Buster! ;~o

    • Jack Hammer says:

      Guap,

Did you use the Pythagorean Theorem to reach that conclusion?

      • Brotha Tuna says:

I think he took the Right Angle on that one.

      • elGuapo says:

Laughing aloud! Pythagorean Theorem? Jack, I don’t partake in such child’s fair, my good man. T’was far simpler elementary. Because of WR’s such as Garcon, Morgan, Moss, and some decent RB’s in Morris and Helu … I deduced … haha! … excuse me … you almost caught me, SEDUCED that RGIII would be the better of the rookies.

      • exgolfer says:

Are you guys going to be here all week?

    • Nick says:

You guys are funny, good stuff.

    • DS94everXev says:

      el

      Luck has Fleener though.

      • elGuapo says:

LoL!! DS, I thought the Luck/Fleener connection in game one was just gonna forego the regular season and give Andrew the Rookie of the Year award. (haha!! just messin Grant!!)

    • Brotha Tuna says:

      @ El Guapo
Sorry, dude, I lead your thread astray! You’ll probably have to ask Grant again on today’s live blog, as your question probably got lost in all the silliness.
      Go Niners

      • elGuapo says:

HAHA!! It’s all good, Brotha Tuna!! I was bein a little goofy to start off with, anyway!! Seasons still very young …. Grant has plenty of time to respond.

  15. Nick says:

The Stanford kicker – Williamson – sucks. 0 for 2 already on FGs, one of them a chip shot.

  16. Adam707 says:

NO, SD, Wash, Oak, HOU, SF win and I get 200 bucks. So let’s bank on that :)

    • exgolfer says:

      Adam,

Tell me you didn’t play a parlay, please. They are the sucker-iest of the sucker bets. You don’t get anything approaching true odds.

  17. 23jordan says:

It is amazing and ironic to see Stanford run the same plays that the Niners run. Watching Stanford impose their will in the 4th quarter just like we are and are built to do. They are on the verge of upsetting USC. Amazing. USC is tired.

  18. CG says:

    Grant,

The worst team in the league is the Dolphins and it’s not even close. At least the Browns have a RB, WR and a QB with potential.

  19. Neal says:

Great freaking ((win)) down at the farm. Way to go Stanford, aww poor baby Lane Kiffin.

    • Jack Hammer says:

That was a great win Neal. How did your HS team fare this week?

      • Neal says:

        Hey Jack,

Nice exciting win, Santa Teresa freshman beat Sequoia today 28 -7, couple of nice runs actually blew my mind, thinking the 1/2 back was down a few times, but as Jimmy V say’s never give up.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Congrats! Nothing beats watching your kids play. My 5 year old scored his first goal in soccer today. I think I was more excited than him ; )

      • Neal says:

LOL well congrats to you and your son. That is exciting !! I am just waiting for my son to block a punt, get a interception or sack the QB. that would make my day.

      • Jack Hammer says:

It will happen, just keep him working hard.

    • msclemons67 says:

Can we borrow Al Davis’ overhead projector to diagram exactly how much Lane Kiffen sucked?

  20. Jons Niners says:

UCLA will not beat Stanford who just knocked off the sorry Tojans, UCLA will not beat my Arizona Wild Cats either….

    • Medic One says:

Actually Stanford is just middle of the pack good. They ahve some issues that can be exploited. USC has one of the worst coaching staffs in college football.
Missouri just beat Arizona. I don’t think it’s that far fetched to think that UCLA coudl do the same. However, I think Oregan wins the division yet again.

      • Crab15 says:

Medic – I’m assuming you’re typing with your smart phone. :-)
Stanford’s not a middle of the pack team.

  21. Crab15 says:

Michael Irvin’s bold prediction: Calvin Johnson catches 4 TD’s vs Niners. Must be back on the joy powder again.

  22. Brotha Tuna says:

ESPN gave Niners some attention. 1st Miss Manners weighs in on etiquette for handshakes. Then Boomer teases Candlestick over the blown transformer incident. Then all the analysts picked the Niners > Lions. (Uh-oh).
Handling success and praise and expectations will be one of many challenges the Niners will have to deal with this year.

  23. DS94everXev says:

AZ D is holding Brady to 6 points at home 3rd quarter.

I knew they would be good. And once again, we see a good D from last year go against an elite offense in the Pats, and the elite offensive team is getting smacked silly by the good Defense.

Goes to show to my statement all offseason. Good offenses play great against crappy D. Because the bad D’s don’t follow their assignments and tackle poorly. That leads to big plays. Good D’s do those things, and the big plays aren’t there for the offense. And the great offenses no longer look great.

And once again the Raiders think the game ends at halftime. Nobody told them there are 4 quarters.

    • BigP says:

Everybody knew the Arizona D would be good. Their question marks revolved around their QB, and Kolb is actually outplaying Brady right now.

  24. BigP says:

Lol, the Raiders are getting their tales kicked by a rookie QB. That Carson Palmer trade looks better every day……..smh.

  25. Neal says:

Tough to be a Raider fan, they are a very poor team, with bad tackling, and poorly coached. They can’t beat a lousy Dolphins with a rookie QB.

    • BigP says:

After that last pick, the Dolphins may put up 40+ points on the Raiders.

      • Neal says:

We are very lucky to have Harbaugh because Dennis Allen is not in his league.

      • BigP says:

I’ve heard very good things about Dennis Allen, but that whole franchise is just starting to recover from the Al Davis regime. The Carson Palmer trade has been a disaster and they lack talent with the exception of Mcfadden.

      • AES* says:

The raiders are the greek mythology equivalent of “Sisyphus.”

They continue to find ways to lose games. It’s almost as if they get close to showing improvement, and then they do something to fall backwards!
        I love it!!!

  26. BigP says:

Cardinals most likely blow the game when RB Williams fumbles the ball at their own 30. What a waste of a hard fought game.

    • BigP says:

LOL! The New England kicker just shanked the kick, what a hot mess.

      • msclemons67 says:

That 4th quarter was crazy. Fun stuff. Cards D was better than I expected; I expected the front 7 to be solid but I didn’t think the secondary would be that effective.

If the Cards’ offense didn’t suck it wouldn’t have been a close game.

      • DS94everXev says:

        msc

Told ya. Don’t you think we can win in NE since the Cards did?

Elite QB’s are losing against elite defenses.

  27. Neal says:

I can’t remember ever that I ever rooted for Dallas and New England to win a game. No go with the Pats, perhaps the cow girls will win.

  28. AES* says:

    MSC,

Just read your football forecast. Awesome job!
I vote for you to cover this area on a weekly basis (lol).

  29. Crab15 says:

    Complete mockery of NFL!
RAIDERS!!!!!!HA HA HA……Silver & Crack!!!!! HA HA HA!!!!!!

  30. Neal says:

I don’t like these late starts for the Niner’s, I am anxious and let’s get this party started.

  31. Brotha Tuna says:

So the NFC West is a weak division, huh? Buncha pushovers. Rams are now up on ‘skins.

    • Crab15 says:

Tuna – NFC Best is lookin good…..ESPN must be demoralized after their Patriots lost.

    • DS94everXev says:

      brotha

PM didn’t want to come here. Look at who he plays in the AFC West:

Raiders/Chargers/Chiefs – Went 0-3. And they really stank. All got their butts kicked.

Rams/Cards/Seattle – 1 win. 1 almost assured win. And the bad team going head to head to the media hype darlings.

Our division is the best in the NFL.

  32. I.P. Daily says:

NFC West is kicking on the east coast mob. They’re gonna crap their Depends on the NFL Network and ESPN if we keep this up.

  33. msclemons67 says:

I hate this part of Sundays. An hour without football. I’m getting the shakes.

  34. Neal says:

I am not that impressed with Cardnals and the Seahawks. Cards were lucky to win and Dallas defensive line was beat up. No way that Lynch is going to be able to run on our defense, we will put him 6 feet under.

    • msclemons67 says:

Cards D Line was disruptive. Have to give them that.

The Seahawks haven’t just been signing 49ers castoffs they’re also trying to use Harbaugh’s game plan. Power runs, efficient passing, stifling defense.

Carroll has been trying to catch up to Harbaugh for 5 years. This may the closest he’s come.

  35. Brotha Tuna says:

The Hawks CBs are big & tough and disrupt the short to medium routes, but gave up some deep stuff today. Hawks DL & OL won the 2nd half.
