49ers-Seahawks live blog: Fourth quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the 49ers Week 7 Thursday night game against the Seattle Seahawks. I’ll update this frequently with observations and analysis from the press box.

7:40 On second and 12, Frank Gore runs up the middle for a 37-yard gain. Wow.

7:41 Hunter gains two yards and Kaepernick subs in for Smith.

7:42 Kaepernick runs to the left and gets smaked, losing a yard.

7:42 Very next play, Smith rolls left, throws across his body to Delanie Walker and gets picked off by Brandon Browner in the end zone. Browner returns it to his 4 yard line. Frank Gore did not get a touch those last three plays when the 49ers were close to the red zone. Roman was too cute, and Smith forced a bad pass, and the Seahawks are back in this.

7:45 Lynch appeared to fumble and recover the ball on his first-down carry. Harbaugh wants to challenge, but the refs said Lynch’s forward progress had been stopped so the play in unreviewable.

7:47 Lynch drops a pass in the flat on third and four. The Seahawks have to punt with 10:26 left in the fourth quarter. Ted Ginn Jr. returns it to the Seahawks’ 49 yard line. The 49ers can put this game away right here with a touchdown drive.

7:49 Vernon Davis still has not been targeted for a pass.

7:54 Gore gains 10 yards on the first play of the drive and then 20 yards on the third play. He and Hunter have combined for 24 carries. The 49ers are undefeated in the Harbaugh era when they combine for more than 20 carries.

7:56 An Anthony Davis tripping penalty pushes the 49ers out of the red zone. On third and seven, Greg Roman calls an ultra-conservative play – QB draw with Alex Smith. That sets up a 28-yard Akers field goal. 13-6 49ers. They could have put the Seahawks away with a TD. 5:24 left in the fourth quarter.

8:02 Lynch gains 9 yards around the left side on first down, then runs up the middle on second-and-1 and gets stuffed by Justin Smith. The refs generously marked the  ball at the 30, meaning first down Seahawks. Harbaugh is challenging the spot.

8:03 Russell Wilson has zero completions in the second half. The offensive coordinator does not have any get-back-in-the-groove type of pass plays to call. Every pass play is a deep shot.

8:04 Harbaugh wins the challenge. It’s third and 1.

8:05 Fullback Michael Robinson runs up the gut for 2 yards to pick up the first down for the Seahawks.

8:07 Chris Culliver knocks away a pass to Sidney Rice on second and 12. Third and 12 and Wilson calls the Seahawks’ first timeout of the second half. They’ve had the ball for three minutes and have gone nowhere.

8:10 Willis tips the ball at the line of scrimmage and the pass falls incomplete. The Seahawks punt with 2:05 left in the fourth quarter. They have two timeouts and the two minute warning. 49ers ball at their 23 yard line.

8:12 Hunter gains two yards up the middle on first down. Two minute warning time.

8:14 The right move for the 49ers is to run the next two plays and force the Seahawks to use their last two timeouts.

8:14 Hunter runs up the middle for no gain and the Seahawks call their second timeout. Strange Roman doesn’t call these runs for Frank Gore or Brandon Jacobs. I guess Jacobs will not play a single snap in his first game as a 49er.

8:16 Alex Smith gains 3 yards and the Seahawks call their final timeout. Andy Lee punts. Seahawks ball at their 11 yard line wih 1:36 left and no timeouts.

8:19 Aldon Smith rushes from the left defensive end spot and sacks Wilson for a 7-yard loss on second and 5. Now it’s fourth and 17 from the Seahawks’ 4.

8:20 The 49ers will win 13-6, and they didn’t throw it to Vernon Davis once. I’m running down to the locker room. Back at you shortly.

  1. michael says:

drive killer again let Alex play

  2. Beat The Hawks says:

    effffing

  3. steelematic says:

Thats y kap was in because they just let alex play

  4. Nick says:

Alex killed that drive, not CK

  5. jsand3030 says:

yay smithers!! wheres your Alexcuses now?

  6. 49er42 says:

    No!
    Bad choice
    This could be costly

  7. Fourth & Alex says:

Man what’s it going to take to rid us of this clown.

  8. BigP says:

Even Frank Gore was telling (literally pointing) for Smith to throw the ball to Moss.

  9. Big Niner says:

    fumble!!

  10. Big Suede says:

that throw was amazingly bad- Smith is looking over his shoulder.

It is time to just go with Kaep- let Smith be there is Kaep fails- it will give him a second wind coming back.

My opinion- once Kaep plays a full game- we will stop thinking about Smith for good.

    • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

      Suede,

There is absolutely no question in my mind that you are correct. What has Smith done that Kap can’t do. Kap will make some mistakes but hell, it’s not like Smith isn’t making any!

  11. angusinCanada says:

Wow… I’m a Smither, but that was a bad, bad play. Good grief!

  12. Adam707 says:

That was a horrible throw. One of the worst ive ever seen him make. Had Moss open for 5 seconds and throws it to him when theres 3 seahawk defenders there. Alex is not built to throw in a tight window.

  13. Big Niner says:

down by contact or forward progress? wtf I wonder if these are the same officials from last years Playoff loss?

  14. 49er42 says:

Can we all agree we really do need Ted Ginn?

    • Houston 9er says:

not sure about that. Ginn doesn’t look right. one great return but several below average returns.

      • Crab15 says:

Houston – Remember these are like pre-season games for Ginn. The rust is coming off slowly. Give it some time.
How about that bias Candy Crowley? Lol

  15. Houston 9er says:

I can’t think of a worse NFL QB than Alex Smith. He’s awful.

    • Fourth & Alex says:

Maybe Marc Sanchez.. But not by much

      • Houston 9er says:

I’d take March Sanchez over AS in a heartbeat.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Sea is a tough D. Our WRs are being held or non-existent. AS missed KW and RM. Can’t miss those in a big game like this for sure.

      • Houston 9er says:

Hof, we should be beating the crap out of this team. We are barely winning for one reason and that’s because Alex Smith is a poor QB.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

He started playing like crap when the QB shuffle started. Before that his INTs were non-existent.

      • NinerNation says:

        Hoferfan67 says:
“He started playing like crap when the QB shuffle started.”

        LOL…you are unreal

      • Houston 9er says:

Unfortunately NN, Hof is being real. He’s a fan of one niner and that’s AS no matter how horribly he performs. Alex Smith truly sucks!

  16. Big Suede says:

Now would be a good time to start using Brandon Jacobs and Gore- just ram the defense- the Seattle D has been out on the field this whole half practically

  17. Hoferfan67 says:

“Frank Gore did not get a touch those last three plays when the 49ers were close to the red zone. Roman was too cute,”

Grant, I agree. Let FG run. AS did have a very poor throw!! Bad.

  18. steelematic says:

If they keep playing kap its gonna hurts smiths feelings. we nred to just keep smith in so his head will stay on straight. n not throw anymore picks

  19. NinerNation says:

horrible int throw by alex but he can still make amends for it on this next possesion. we got this….

  20. MontanaMan16 says:

    NO MORE WILDKRAP!

  21. Big Niner says:

    shake and bake Gore

  22. Fourth & Alex says:

    Back to Captain Checkdown

  23. Hoferfan67 says:

Now no QB shuffle run FG and play action!

  24. bayareafanatic says:

Gore saving Smith’s ass. Smith is godd aweful.

  25. Big Niner says:

    we need jacobs!!

  26. Houston 9er says:

This is the same spot the Patriots were in last week. We MUST put this one in the endzone to help us get past the Seahawks big play potential.

  27. bayareafanatic says:

Take the 3 don’t trust Smith

  28. Big Suede says:

Jacobs would be a better alternative than hunter- seattle is stacking the box.

  29. steelematic says:

If we win……… the players of the game will be…… The OLINE

  30. Big Niner says:

Roman?? qb draw with smith? really?

  31. bayareafanatic says:

Smith twice in Redzone 3 points. Smith sucks

  32. Beat The Hawks says:

    chicken call

  33. steelematic says:

U know roman doest trust smith when they have him running qb draws.. throw the damn ball to moss

  34. Pogue Mahone says:

At the girl friend’s for dinner and she doesn’t have NFL Network! Ugh. Anyway, nice blog Grant… keeping me updated. Are you only writing blog or doing gamer, too?

  35. 49er42 says:

The coaches don’t trust Alex. That limits the offense.
If they don’t trust him they need to replace him.

  36. Houston 9er says:

That holding call was TOTAL BS!!!!

  37. Adam707 says:

With the way the D has played in the 2nd half I think conservative was the way to go. Take the 3.

  38. Big Niner says:

Let’s go defense show the country why you’re the best!!!

  39. Adam says:

Not a good place to be. Too much time left. D has to step up.

  40. Johnny Christo says:

    Where is that moron DSL?

  41. bayareafanatic says:

Don’t worry Alex. All arrows up. Ignore the hyperbowl buddy.

  42. 49er42 says:

    Giants are getting wrecked 8-1
Need a big defensive stand, burn another minute then give it to the O.

  43. NinerNation says:

finally Harbs wins a challenge! lol

  44. Houston 9er says:

Someone really needs to investigate this officiating. This has been awful. That spot to give Seattle the first down was horrendous.

  45. bayareafanatic says:

Some say Seattle is good hahaha. I SAY Smith missed two wide open TDs. Oh and bye bye Primate.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

An ugly win is a win. Sea took our WRs out of the game with help from the refs. Yes AS missed KW and especially a wide open RM. Not enough to displace him. If they stick to the core plays, they win period!

    • ribico says:

      >>Some say Seattle is good hahaha.

Those “somes” would be the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots. Lesser somes would be Carolina and Dallas.

Opposition QB Ratings in Seattle wins:
      Romo 74.1
      Newton 56.8
      Rodgers 81.5
      Brady 79.3

      In Comparison:
      Smith 74.5

Smith had a pretty bad game. Lots of QBs have had pretty bad games against the ‘hawks. Their D is for real.

      • claude balls says:

        @ribico:

Nice try, but his logic shield protects him from having to acknowledge inconvenient facts.

      • ribico says:

Yeah, I’m no longer going to try. I figure like most children they will cry themselves out eventually.

  46. bayareafanatic says:

Come on Hof positive spin this.

  47. 49er42 says:

    Need a stop
Pick 6 would be better of course

Giants will be down 3-1 can we come back again?

  48. Big Niner says:

a pick 6 would be nice

  49. bayareafanatic says:

But he’s a top ten QB

  50. Beat The Hawks says:

who the f threw the flag ?

    • Houston 9er says:

That was awful. Whomever threw that flag needs to be investigated. The ball was obviously tipped. Something isn’t right with this officiating crew. This is really bad.

  51. undercenter says:

gore up the gut nothing more nothing less

  52. Matt says:

I’d just like to thank Bay on behalf of the entire blog for betting DS/Prime and getting that scum off the blog for 2 weeks!!!! Thank you!

  53. angusinCanada says:

Smith keeping loose so he can throw it on this drive…..:)

    • Matt says:

I want to just say I predicted this game plan. Gore, Gore, Hunter, a reverse to manningham then more gore gore gore and a little hunter. Imissed if they did a reverse to manningham, but Ty SF coaching staff for going back to what wins.

  54. Big Suede says:

    Is gore hurt????

  55. Big Niner says:

play action pass right here, motion to the left, fake the stretch it out and turn around with a TE coming accross counter the flow!!

  56. 49er42 says:

Need 3 first downs, no mistakes, no turnovers

  57. Big Niner says:

    naked bootleg time!!!

  58. 49er42 says:

    Play action pass

  59. pete4mtx says:

Hawks might get ball back n gore looks hurt…..

  60. Big Niner says:

bad play calling, naked bootleg, they are expecting the run. fake the handoff and run it anyways!!

  61. Nick says:

No prevent D here. Go Niners

  62. pete4mtx says:

    Really?? 3rd n 8 n thats what we do…patethic

  63. 49er42 says:

    Hated that call too conservative
    This could create a problem

  64. Big Niner says:

    DDDDDDDDD fence!!

  65. pete4mtx says:

    Here we go…DEFENSE!!!!

  66. Nick says:

    No time outs either

  67. Beat The Hawks says:

    smell pick 6 here

  68. Crab15 says:

140 yards passing will not get us to a Super Bowl. The passing game must improve obviously.

    • Matt says:

I agree but this is a top notch D. I think SF beats any team in the NFL with that running game.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Crab, AS missed two passes. The WRs were held or were not open per MMayock on NFL network. I agree, AS needs to play better and they need to find a way to get the ball to VD and MC. The shuffle is done!!

      • Msclemons67 says:

No more excuses! No more! We’ve had 7 years of excuses for this flop.

He played like crap for the 2nd week in a row. Period. He’s out of excuses. If he hasn’t figured out how to play QB in his 8th season that’s on him. No one else.

This game wouldn’t have been close with a real QB.

      • jsand3030 says:

        2 passes? BWAHAHAHA

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Thanks Clem. Don’t know what we’d do here without your constant cynicism. AS needs to elevate or he’s gone! He has time to redeem himself with 9 games to go plus the playoffs. TBD.

      • Crab15 says:

Clem – How is your wife doing?

  69. Crab15 says:

    Aldon!!

  70. Fourth & Alex says:

    Vernon Davis no catches?

  71. Big Niner says:

Jersey is on the way 99!!

  72. Crab15 says:

Watch the push-off from Golden Tate!!

  73. Nick says:

    Seattle is rattled

  74. pete4mtx says:

    1more play cmon Defense!!!

  75. Big Niner says:

    I want a safety or pick 6

  76. pete4mtx says:

    Safety!!!!”

  77. Nick says:

    Game over baby

  78. Nick says:

    Take the safety

  79. undercenter says:

    Smart move Harbaugh

  80. bayareafanatic says:

THE ROOM SHOULD LOVE ME. I GOT RID OF PRIME LOL.

  81. Crab15 says:

Take the safety you fool Harbaugh!!!! Are you outa your skull?

    • undercenter says:

      No its a smart move

      • Fourth & Alex says:

How is that a smart move? This should be an interesting explanation…

      • undercenter says:

It is a genuis move. No chance for seattle to get ball back

      • Fourth & Alex says:

Lets go over this again… You go up by 9 with 30 some odd seconds left. They have to free kick it to you. You then have to lose the ball, they have to score on a quick Hail Mary pass, then win an onside kick, then kick a record long field goal or another Hail Mary.

Same goes if you take over on downs. You’d have to fumble the snap, and if you did, they only need one Hail Mary to tie.

      • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

        Niners took
The ball there because JH learned that you don’t run extra plays if you don’t have to. He knows that his players can’t get hurt that way. 2 plays in the victory formation.

    • Adam says:

I think he was trying to keep them from challenging the chop bkock. Not sure.

    • angusinCanada says:

Either way, we win. I have the 49er D on my fantasy team, so I’m disgusted with the decision to decline the safety, but good win, the defence really showed up on the 2nd half!

  82. pete4mtx says:

Wtf is going on…take the safety n get the ball

  83. Beat The Hawks says:

the spread is 7 …and Jim declined the safety ? fishy

  84. 49er42 says:

Unless he made the 1st down then it is very stupid
Take the points and the ball!

  85. Matt says:

    wow that is ridiculous Jim

  86. Nick says:

    Kick a FG

  87. Big Niner says:

My fantasy liked the safety better

  88. Pogue Mahone says:

At least Seattle still has the sunshine. Oh, guess not. Sorry.

  89. pete4mtx says:

Oh well best in the west for now

  90. Matt says:

9 points and the ball is a win Jim. What are you thinking? I thought maybe he was trying to rub Caroll by showing them the ball was short of the first down. Now, I have no idea

    • angusinCanada says:

It didn’t matter whatsoever, we have 100% chance of winning with a kneel down doing what he did.

    • Big Niner says:

no. He probably didn’t want to risk injury on the punt return. Remember Morgan last year?

    • Matt says:

Going back to the Smith interception, you have Frank Gore pointing out that Moss is open in the back of the endzone. I think tonight is going to be the begining of the end of the Alex Smith show.
To Alex Smith, thank you for being a pillar of professionalism. Thank you for what you did here in SF. Good luck in the future, but don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Won’t happen this year and he can still redeem himself with a lot of football and the playoffs left to go. The year is not over yet, but the misses are not good.

      • jsand3030 says:

Yeah and thanks for managing things so great

      • Matt says:

Hof, I agree 100% with you. I respect your insights. I think this is the last year SF fields AS. I like Alex Smith as a person from what I’ve seen on the field and read from him over the last 8 years. I just think this is the final chapter for AS in SF. He might turn into a Steve Young and go to another team where things finally click. I wish him the best until he plays against SF.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Matt, can’t disagree. Unfortunately I don’t see a competent replacement on the horizon. TBD.

  91. Crab15 says:

Harbaugh never saw that NY Giants fumble on last play of game, when Herman Edwards scooped it up and scored for the victory.

  92. Big Niner says:

Ugly win but I’ll take it…..the offense needs work though and I hope Gore is ok. He’ll have 10 days to rest.

  93. Houston 9er says:

Our 49ers won this in spite of Alex Smith. He was truly terrible. BUT we are in 1st place. Great job of everyone overcoming the ineptitude of the QB spot. I’ll take it.

    • angusinCanada says:

At least his numbers were better than Wilson’s….

      • Houston 9er says:

Yeah you’re right. At least our QB with 8 years experience had numbers better than a rookie. That must make AS a HOF candidate.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Two poor passes by AS. He needs to get over the QB shuffle BS and focus on playing better. He is the QB for the year and needs to produce at a much higher level.

      • angusinCanada says:

I don’t think he’ll be here next year if he doesn’t pick it up, that’s for sure.

      • tkamB says:

Well Wilson’s were better than Brady last week so if I know the transitive property like I think I do then that might make AS a HOF candidate.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

tkam, good point but AS *can’t* miss those two passes – one to KW and one to RM. He hits those he is back on track but he didn’t. He is the best option and the shuffle is gone, but he needs to elevate his play or else.

      • Houston 9er says:

AS didn’t just miss 2 passes. He ran himself into sacks. He was indecisive. He made bad reads. Alex Smith was horrendous in this game and the last game. He really is horrible.

      • tkamB says:

Ha I was just making an admittedly lame joke, Alex does need to step it up. I think the offense needs to go back to weeks one and two with the balanced attack while allowing Alex to do work at the line of scrimmage. I feel like were hearing “kill” and “let it roll” calls less and less each week and I don’t see why.

      • Crab15 says:

Hofe – Way to man-up and tell it like it is!! We’ll take the win though.
BTW, how bout that bias Candy Crowley? Lol

      • Jack Hammer says:

You have to give Smith credit, he did have 1 good series tonight. Fortunately that was enough.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jack, YUP the rook that beat TB lost big time tonight. AS wasn’t good and specifically those two passes were god awful. I’ll take the win and AS has time to redeem himself. TBD.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Hofer,

Roman got it right in the 2nd half tonight. More Gore, less Alex is a good thing. Big time win tonight, now time for them to get rested and on to Arizona.

    • MontanaMan16 says:

The difference in the game…AS to DW. First its Alex cant win against a tough defense and now who has the Alexcuses? haha Killin me!

      • Ed from AZ says:

A good QB is a guy who does ANYTHING HE HAS TO to win the game. Win, something Brady and Rodgers did not do against SEA’s defense.

And gotta give some credit to the SF DEF for bouncing back.

    • Neal says:

AS really has issues, how do you miss a wide open Randy Moss, and over throw KW, we won because of how we won last year, Akers away and Ginn looked good. and a great defense and tonight our O Line was off the charts. Frank Gore was off the charts. Don’t think AS will be here next year, don’t really feel we have a Super Bowl team yet. I am not believing the hype. AS now has played 3 great games and 3 poor games and one below average.

Next year AS might be gone and I am sure that the Smithers will gone to and root for his new team.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Neal, can’t disagree but who is going to replace him? Please tell me.

      • Nick says:

        Hofer
Didn’t I call it? Close game, solid D and special teams, Alex Smith sucking for the most part?

      • Nick says:

        Neal,
The roller coaster ride continues for Alex Smith. Let’s hope we catch the upswing part of the ride next game.

      • Neal says:

        Hofer,

Perhaps it will be Kaep, he will have more experience by next year, maybe ST will get in the mix. Maybe a free agent, but I am really disappointed in Smith, I thought he was going to be better this year with his new weapons and it has been a disappointment, or a mix of good and bad reviews.
I want AS to be the guy, but he has to play at least 12 good to great games a season for that to happen.

  94. Adam707 says:

We got back to 49er football. Run the ball and hold opponents under 10. Smith another bad performance unfortunately. Nice bye-like week off. No game until next monday. Rest up and focus.

  95. Worlds greatest man says:

49ers did good tonight and Im glad we have Alex smith and not Russell Wilson 8 for 22 and no touchdowns now thats God awful, also for all the whiners about the teams performance we played a team who’s defense was just as good as ours and won it, had we played this style last week we would have won as well. The reason we didn’t, short week and the coaching staff could not afford to have a banged up frank gore face a divisional opponent.

    • jsand3030 says:

wake up.. The seattle WRs dropped too many wide open passes.. Russell wilson didn’t play nearly as bad as the stats showed. he put balls on his WRs where Alex can never put the ball.

    • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

Russel Wilson outplayed Alex Smith. His teammates let him down by dropping 2 touchdowns. Seattle had at least 5-6 drops tonigh. They could’ve been up 13 points if they catch the ball.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Who care about RWilson is he a 9er! The 9ers won!! Move along…

      • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

How’d you like your Herod game tonite. I told you he would crap all over the field. He needs a guide dog out there with him. You guys think hrs crap on TV. You should see that Shi/ in person. I keep telling the blog that this dude is gonna kill us in the playoffs again. Smith is done Hofer!!! DONE!!!!

  96. Worlds greatest man says:

Also how many interceptions did Tom brady have when he played seatle last week. I’m sure their secondary and defense makes all QBs look worse then they really are.

    • Nick says:

      Oneniner, is that you?

      • Worlds greatest man says:

Nope not at all, Ive read this blog for awhile but only recently started commenting, alot of whiners on here. Its almost like the fans are upset we are a winning team now.. It confuses me after 10 years of crap we get an amazing team and people still arent satisfied its pathetic.

  97. undercenter says:

Grant you were close on your prediction.

  98. MontanaMan16 says:

As expected, it was a defensive jugernaut. The difference, Alex found the endzone and Wilson didnt! Goes that way sometimes, especially since AS cant beat a good defense! lol

    • jsand3030 says:

correction: DW found the endzone. Did you see the ball get caught in the endzone? Oh wait your right, he threw it to a wide open defender in the endzone

    • jsand3030 says:

Alex deserves no credit for this win. The defense, Gore and the O line won this for us

      • Hoferfan67 says:

I don’t think AS would want credit and would admit he misses those passes. The problem is he needs to quite saying he misses some plays and make them. The 9ers have to ride him to the playoffs and he needs to start making plays when they are open similar to his first two games of the year. Plenty of time, but no excuses!

      • MontanaMan16 says:

        More Alexcuses!

        Brady 36 of 58 for 395. 2 td, 2 int 79.3 rating
        Rodgers. 26 of 39 0 td, 0 int 81.5 rating
        Alex 14 of 23 1 td 1 int, 74.5 rating

So they just passed more but didnt fare much better!

      • jsand3030 says:

your right, theres no other option but him.. I dont think CK is fully ready. If they win it this year, itll be because of the defense and running game..

      • MontanaMan16 says:

How the he!! does Brady throw 22 freakin incomplete passes?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

CK has been here two years who know if he’ll ever be ready? May need to put our large number of draft choices together and get a top QB.

      • Big Niner says:

Hofe, I think you might be right. We need to get a real pro style QB. It’s looking like we panicked with that pick. Question is, can we salvage the pick? trade him? AS is not the answer and since he’s “supposedly ” mastered the offense, why does he look so bad?
Problem is our team is aging and we need some other key positions to be filled like, left tackle, center, DE, safety, CB, DT. two of those require a high pick, ( CB and Left tackle) unless we find hidden gems.
Do we pull a Mike ditka? trade away the whole draft for the number 1 pick? and if that was to be the case, shouldn’t we have done that last year?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Big Niner, I’m not a fan of running QB’s. I want a good pocket guy and yes it’s worth trading several picks to get that guy in the draft.

      • BigP says:

There isn’t enough tape on CK to make any type of determination on his future. The guy has been inserted into the games specifically to run the read option play. He isn’t being asked to run the offense, just a couple of plays. He may very well turn out to be a very good throwing QB if given the chance, but it’s hard to say without seeing him in a game running the offense.

      • Big Niner says:

        Big P,
They should have thrown him in during the Jets and bills games. I don’t see any cake walks left on our schedule where we can do that.

  99. Big Niner says:

I’m happy we went back to the meat and potatoes of play calling. Roman is a buzz killer sometimes though. I feel like he tries to get too cute sometimes. We still haven’t seen Hunter and Gore split back behind smith…

  100. Crab15 says:

    23J posted in pre-game blog:
“VD dropping passes in warm ups”……Then VD doesn’t touch the ball in the game. Coincidence?

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Crab, how long have you been here? How many times has Jordo been correct here? C’mon man!!

      • Crab15 says:

I thought you would enjoy that one Hofe….Lol.
Hey did you notice Brandon Jacobs played error free tonight?
I think I will enjoy this BIG win more tomorrow.

    • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

I said the same thing to myself Crabs. Vernon blocked like a demon today. He threw the key block on DWs touchdown. At least we know that all of the receivers we have are basically decoys. We win by running the ball, playing solid defense. Playing great special teams and having Smith check down to Gore. That’s it and that’s all.
Smith misses more receivers in a game than he sees. I think his face mask is on the way. I say we give Smith a Joe Theisman bar face mask. He missed a wide open frank gore on 3rd down in the 1st series as well. That’s shy they were checking down to gore in the 2nd half because Smith wasn’t even looking at Gore in the flat and out of the backfield in the front of the defense. I don’t ha e to rag on Smith. It sounds like you all saw that performance.

  101. BigP says:

Alex Smith completed 5-6 passes to Frank Gore for 51 yards. He completed 9-17 passes for 89 yards to everybody else. The interception was so bad because it was in the red zone, Moss was wide open for a fifteen yard stretch and Gore was pointing for Alex to throw Moss the ball. It’s alarming that the RB sees the wide open target but the QB doesn’t. It’s better to win ugly then it is to lose pretty, but those deficiencies need to be cleaned up quickly.

    • Crab15 says:

BigP – That play was disturbing.
Alex did have that one good drive and TD throw to Walker but that’s not good enough.
Do you think we still win if Seahawks don’t drop 5 passes?
      Defense was dominate!

      • Big Niner says:

I think he missed Crabs alot tonight. He seemed very frustrated enough for Gore to calm him down.

      • BigP says:

The defense was dominant, although Wilson threw some perfect balls that were flat out dropped by his receivers. A few of those were on third downs, which could have altered the outcome of the game. The Seahawks are a good team though, I didn’t expect a dominant victory. This team simply can not afford to turn the ball over in the red zone. If you are going to ride your defense, you need to give them every point you can. The game ball definitely goes to Frank Gore.

  102. ninermd says:

This was the same team I saw last season. Except #11. I’m telling you 4 Alex smith apologist. The fans at the stick are growing tired of smith at a fast rate. He needs to step it up. HE flat out stunk tonight. Thank god for the defense and running game.

  103. Sean in Canada says:

Another disappointing win for those who hate AS more than they like the Niners. Ugly win is better than a pretty loss.

  104. MontanaMan16 says:

Everyone thinks of Joe Montana as a God. Myself included. But everyone just remembers the good. I remember in 1990, the year we’re going for the 3 peat. Giants/9ers, Monday night! JM was 12 of 29 for 152 and a td. we won 7-3. Rice had 1 catch for 13 yds. The next week was the Bengals. We were 12-1, Bengals were 7-6. JM was 19 of 26 for 185, 0 td and 1int. We ran for 200 yds. The week before the Giants we lost to a 4-7 Rams team. JM had 6 games that year with under 200 yds and a few barely over 200 yds. But NOBODY can see past the SB’s. It was a very AS type season and if you think for 1 minute we didn’t rely on the running game and defense, you got a bad memory! Just sayin!

    • DS94everXev says:

And the haters reply about how you can’t use Alex’s name in the same post as JM’s is coming.

JM never played on a team with bad defense. They saved him a lot of times when he wasn’t on. As did Roger Craig when the passing game wasn’t working. First 1000 catching/1000 running in NFL history. Impossible to do if you don’t run it a lot of times and you aren’t checking it down a lot of times.

But the haters re-write history to fit their own version of the past.

    • jsand3030 says:

We dont have a bad memory and we know that the defense and running game will have to win us a championship.. Not sure what your gripe is.. Smith isnt a factor.. Thats just it. You Smith defenders think that he has something to do with the wins, but he doesnt. Hes not a good QB. Let him sit there and manage the game by handing the ball off to Gore and well be fine.. Despite what his defenders claim, he doesnt win the games for us. People that think he does, takes all the credit away from the brilliance of the defense and Frank Gore. This offense will be better when hes gone

    • Ed from AZ says:

      @MontanaMan16, Amen!
