Report: 49ers trade sixth-round pick for Boldin

ESPN is reporting the 49ers have traded a sixth round pick in the upcoming draft to the Ravens for wide receiver Anquan Boldin. Boldin will turn 33 years old in October. The 49ers owe him $6 million dollars if he passes his physical.

Boldin caught four touchdown passes in the playoffs a few months ago, including one in the Super Bowl. He’s a possession receiver and a red zone weapon. He is not particularly fast and he does not stretch the field.

Do you like this trade? Do you think Boldin is worth what the 49ers will have to pay him?

Do you think he will be the 49ers’ No.2 wide receiver next season? Or do the 49ers still need a deep threat to complement Crabtree?

UPDATE: NFL Network’s Albert Breer, citing a 49ers’ source, is reporting the 49ers want to redo Boldin’s deal or extend it.

  1. TIM says:

Really Grant? What, you took a nap for the last hour or so ? lol

    • BennyBlanco says:

I was just about to say haha

    • MidWestNiner says:

He probably had to take most of that time to recover from the shock. I mean a six round pick for one of the huge contributors on the Ravens’s Super Bowl team? Unbelievable.

    • TIM says:

More BREAKING NEWS…This just in,the Niners trade Alex smith to the Chiefs… :)

  2. Jack Hammer says:

Love the trade. See him in the same 2-3 role that Moss filled last year. He has shown that he is clutch.

Foresee them eventually releasing Manningham, thus the deal is a bit more cap friendly.

They will still need to look for a WR in the draft because I don’t see this being anything more than a 1 year deal.

    • Scooter_McG says:

I agree Jack – he’ll be the #2/ #3 WR this year, and Manningham will probably be released. I still think they’ll draft a guy in the early rounds.

I wouldn’t be surprised though if the 49ers try and extend his deal to a 2-3 year deal though. I see him as a similar player to Cris Carter and Hines Ward, and they were still productive in their mid-30s.

  3. Tha Grinch says:

Im just laughing at Seattle..They always seem to be the little brother to the Niners..Their city team everything..Haha…Im betting D Walker is gone and so is Goldson..Cullivers getting moved to safety and their gonna draft a reciever and let him battle with Jenkins for the deep balls..Kapernick is gonna go off next year watch…Go 9ers…Seahawks..bwahahahaha

  4. RednGold1 says:

I like the trade. Sure, he’s worth the six mil. I’d still like to see a speedster to compliment Crabtree. I also think Boldin is worth a sixth round pick given the haul of picks we have.

  5. Dan says:

Glad we can count on Grant Cohn for the latest news, as it happens.

  6. Shoupbj says:

I would say he was a good signing for the division. With the seahawks mugging everyone at the line Boldin really helps, as with his size he is really hard to play press coverage against. I actually would have preferred Harving but not for the price the seahawks paid (from what the reports are).

    • Brodie2Washington says:

Shoupbj: My very first thought when I heard of the trade. Boldin catches those contested passes.

  7. ron burgandy says:

49ers need to get orton as a backup quarterback

  8. Dh3 says:

Bold in is a beast he’ll earn every penny of that six mil…now we have the best two blocking receivers in the NFL too all we need is a speedster in the draft and were good

  9. MikeinSF#2 says:

For his blocking alone, Q is a great pick up. His game is physical with an F!! Any for a lowley 6th rounder? No brainer. Trent Baalke has been owning the NFL since 2011.

  10. MidWestNiner says:

I like this move. We have a great redzone threat now besides just Crabtree and a tough-as-nail WR as well. His blocking capability will definitely help when Kaep or one of guys in the RB stable are unleashed in the running game. And he probably has 2-4 years of service left in him. Add to all of this the fact that the team will still have 14 draft picks and it all adds up to a solid move by Baalke.

  11. RednGold1 says:

Some tweets from people re: the Boldin trade.

    • Razoreater says:

      Ha ha! That’s funny.

    • Grimey9er says:

Ravens Players aren’t happy. Good trade.

      Brendon Ayanbadejo @brendon310
The boldin trade wow. Do we even win the game with out him?

      No, Brendan, you don’t.

  12. Razoreater says:

One would hope he contributes a lot more than Moss did last year for that amount of cash. Red zone production should increase significantly. As soon as Manningham is cleared by the medical staff, I would anticipate him being released. The 49ers will still need a tall, speedy receiver like Hunter in the draft. You cannot count on Jenkins at this point.

    • Scooter_McG says:

Crabtree, Boldin, Hunter, Jenkins and Williams… that would look nice!

      • Grimey9er says:

I’d like to see Lockette break out.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Don’t be surpised if the team trades up for Tavon Austin. It can’t be ruled out after the moves Baalke has made this off-season.

      • Scooter_McG says:

That would be great Grimey, but I’m not counting on it. Big, fast, but hands of iron.

      • Grimey9er says:

That’s too bad. #1 attribute I like in a WR is good hands. All the size and speed in the world don’t matter if you can’t catch the ball.

      • hightop says:

Love to grab Hunter or DaRick but wont be surprised this year if we get a curve ball (like Swope at slot, etc).

    • MidWestNiner says:

DeAndre Hopkins is another option Razor. He doesn’t have track speed but he plays fast.

    • Scooter_McG says:

Personally I’d still go Wheaton to add the deep speed element. There should be some good WR options available in the 2nd round.

      • Razoreater says:

Agreed. Baalke is in the drivers seat, his Garvin is set for 1 MetLife Stadium Dr, East Rutherford, NJ 07073. Let’s all sit back and enjoy the ride.

  13. Larry says:

Q is a beast. I do think this is a better trade than PH. PH has allot on concussions and migranes. Will not last in the NFC West.

  14. Brotha Tuna says:

    > Yes, I like the trade.
    > Yes he’s worth it for one year.
    >Yes, Anquan will be the presumptive #2 WR.
    >Yes, they still need a speed guy and by the way another option for PR/KR. That could be one guy.

  15. Rick says:

    Love it. A++++

I don’t think the Niners are done dealing yet. We know they have a boat load of draft choices and very few needs. I am still hoping they can package their own 1st, and the 2nd rounder they will get from KC for Alex to move up and draft an impact cornerback.

    Go Baalke…

  16. Grimey9er says:

“If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.”- Trent Baalke

  17. Sputnik says:

The niners got I guy who is old and six mill a year (one year) and had Success Against the niners I don’t think he did any thing in the playoffs other than Super Bowl I call this a buddy deal or Should I say a brother deal bad Decision some of that money could of Helped Sign Darrell Revis or Dishon Gholdston but what do I know

    • Mr. Automatic says:

I read Q had near 500 yards and 4TDs in the playoffs + super bowl (4 games). His ypc for the regular season is > Crab’s, too.

    • Allan says:

You don’t think he did anything in the playoffs other than the SB?

Maybe you should have watched the games.

      Guy’s a beast.

  18. Brotha Tuna says:

There is a body of opinion on here that the Niners should release Manningham. I’m not in agreement. I’d keep him even expecting him to miss the first 6 games rehabbing on PUP. He thens brings experience on the stretch run to the Play Offs.

    • Dan says:

So you’d rather pay our #3 or #4 WR (depending on where AJ Jenkins ends up) like $4-5M next year, rather than actually using that money to upgrade our team in other areas?

    • Brotha Tuna says:

      PS
Kiper’s Mock has Datone Jones dropping to SF with Trufant going #28 and Rhodes going #29.

      • Grant Cohn says:

If the Dolphins sign Mike Wallace or Greg Jennings, I feel pretty confident they’re going to draft Rhodes.

      • Grimey9er says:

Saw that. Not a bad situation. The niners can then go CB/WR with their 2nd round picks.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

Makes sense. The Mocks are all over the place. I’ve seen Rhodes and Datone Jones listed 20 spots apart between some Mocks.

    • Brodie2Washington says:

Anyone know the rules re releasing injured players like MM?

All boils down to health. If they project MM to recover, OK. If not, bye bye.

  19. oneniner says:

I don’t get the trade…..for 6million we get a older possession WR ….for a 1yr……we need a speedy wallace who can stretch the field.

I don’t like the trade…..we already have crabtree who is our number 1………boldin is good but can he stretch the field and demand a safety to help cover = NO

  20. tkamB says:

I think its a great move, Bolding brings a physical presence that will help immensely in the red zone and think he could complement Crabtree well. Hopefully Jenkins is able to provide mroe of a speed threat this year if not, maybe they go after Tavon Austin

  21. greennoblework says:

The 49ers HAVE another deep threat in their tight end, Davis. May take some new plays to involve him more, but we’ve seen what he’s capable of. Once the fastest, he’s still probably the 2nd fastest man on the squad after the Oregon RB, whom I’m still looking forward to seeing run loose.

  22. Sputnik says:

Jim calls very suspect call in the Super Bowl on the six yard line 4 strait passes and now he helps the ravens with there cap troubles , I don’t care what any one says smells Fishy I’m going to be the first Jim’s needs his walking papers the sea hawks got a lot fast on offense and the niners are losing players on defense makes a lot of Sense

  23. bigandbold says:

First thing I did was shake my head and laugh. Typical 49ers – always enamored with the guy that beat you… 6 million bucks for a 32-year old possession receiver? Second thing I did was shake my head and remember that I’ve doubted Baalke before…

  24. TIM says:

Another brilliant move by Baalke ! Offered the Ravens a throw away draft pick for a player that was going to be on the free agent market when the Ravens were forced to release him. Now Baalke doesn’t have to compete with all the other GM’s that would have sold their first born to get Boldin in free agency.

  25. rocket says:

    To answer Grant’s questions:

I love this trade. 6th round pick for a guy who caught 60+ balls and averaged more than 14 yards a catch. That’s worth more than 6 mill on the market.

He has never played with speed. He’s the same guy he’s been from day one with Arizona; big physical guy who outfights the defender for the ball and then is hard to bring down.

He may not be a deep threat, but his yards per catch has been substantially higher than Percy Harvin’s and he is going to be a huge upgrade in the Redzone.

I think they could still use another guy who can stretch the field but I haven’t given up on the possibility of Jenkins being that guy and can’t see them drafting a WR in the first two rounds anymore.

The starters will be Crabs and Boldin and that isn’t too bad.

  26. jgwindsor jaws says:

for sixth round OK…..but a WR for one year rental for 6 mill…….seems like more cap maneuvering is required….so i am thinking mannigham is gone….and carlos rogers is gone

  27. 49ersROK says:

Great move, niners! Harbaugh tends to go after guys who kicked his butt previously: like Manningham did in the Giants NFC Championships, Tolzien did in the San Diego pre-season game, LaMichael James did against Stanford, and now as Boldin did in the Superbowl. I am hoping we can still get Aqib Talib to fill the cornerback spot and address the rest in the draft. The Honey Badger, Tyran Matthieu, to cover Percy Harvin in the slot and a good safety would be great. I’m getting excited if they can do these things.

  28. Neal says:

This is a great trade and for a possession receiver, he looked like a man playing with boys last year. Also the Ravens got weaker.

  29. Coffee's for closers says:

Second year in a row we steal a WR from the team that ended our season. Hopefully we get a bit more out of this one.

  30. Hacksaw46 says:

Would like to see younger guys. 32 going on retirement!!!

  31. Grant Cohn says:

Albert Breer just said on NFL Network the 49ers will attempt to redo or extend Boldin’s deal. Maybe instead of one year, $6 million, it’ll be a three year, $8 or $9 million deal for Boldin.

  32. Sputnik says:

Wow 8-9 Three years for Bolden , Grant what did the niners see in this guy that Baltimore did not ? Cant be money if the niners are willing to pay that !

    • Dennis says:

Not that much money if you release Moss – 2.5 mil, Maningham – 2.5 mil, and Ginn – 1.375 mil. It all makes sense to me. I would rather have Bolden at 6 mil

  33. Wilson says:

I was frightened of Boldin before the Super Bowl – for good reason, as it turned out. Put the ball anywhere close, and even if he’s well defended, he’ll come down with it. A scary offensive weapon. Crabtree and Boldin, indefensible. One or more of our other wide receivers and/or Vernon should be fine for stretching the field.

A sixth rounder? That’s a pure salary dump for Baltimore, one of the results of that ridiculous contract for Flacco. Good luck to them in years to come, and thanks for the gift.

Wide receivers are no longer a position of need. Move on to defensive backfield and defensive line.

  34. Sputnik says:

    @wilson
With all do respect with what money they just spent a lot on a over the hill wr if he was so good ravens don’t let him go , the ravens aren’t Exactly over flowing with wrs

    • dc9er says:

the Ravens just screwed themselves over paying Flacco. No way he goes back to another Superbowl. that team is gonna be in salary cap hell real soon.

  35. chicago49er says:

I LOVE this trade! Bolden has been a pain in our tail for years and he is one tough football player that will play physical football! I do not care about the age, we gave up a 6th rounder and got a wideout that can play at least two more years if he stays healthy. In addition, Bolden is going to help us against the seahawks and the Rams with his physical play. As of now we have Crabtree, Bolden and VD to make the defenses decide how to stop our offense! If K williams and Manningham come back from their injuries healthy and back to normal then this will be a dangerous wide receiver group! I still would draft a fast wideout to be able to stretch the field. GO NINERS

  36. Bill Williamkill says:

Thank You Grimey and Mikesf! Holy cow you guys are rough on Grant! I guess you stick your chin out there what can you expect? Take a bow Grant for a good chin.
Man the niners I think are gonna shock us this season.

  37. Jack Hammer says:

Stealing this from Sando, the 49ers actually are getting younger at WR with the Boldin trade. Boldin (32) … Moss (36)

  38. old coach says:

Greg Cosell said something interesting on the Murph and Mac show this morning. The 9ers are looking for a CB not to replace Rogers not to replace Culliver but to upgrade over T. Brown. Its what i’ve been saying since the SB Rogers and Culliver were’nt nearly as bad as many here thought they were and we wo’nt be releasing Rogers any time soon

    • claude balls says:

      @ old coach:

      Thanks for the report.

What’s interesting is that Greg Cosell claims to know what the 49ers are looking for. Did he deduce that somehow from film study, or does he claim to have an inside source?

    • Jack Hammer says:

      OC,

The anti-Rogers camp is going to be very disappointed. Prepare for at least a couple posts about how the 49ers blew it by not cutting or trading him.

He may struggle inside, but his play on the boundary is very good.

  39. Jack Hammer says:

Barrows is reporting that the pick for Boldin is the 2nd Rd 6 pick (31), meaning they still have the earlier selection. This trade keeps getting better.

    • Coffee's for closers says:

I love the enthusiasm and I’m really not trying to pee on your Wheaties but is it that big of a victory to keep a draft pick that probably has little chance of making the team anyway?

      • BigP says:

        Coffee,
It is a big victory to get a player of Boldin’s caliber for basically a seventh round draft choice. Jack is obviously looking at the glass as half full, and I agree with him. This is a good pickup.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Dang it Coffee! That was the last of the Wheaties too : (
        Bring on the Lucky Charms….

      • Coffee's for closers says:

“and I agree with him. This is a good pickup.”

        Did I say it wasn’t?

      • BigP says:

“is it that big of a victory to keep a draft pick that probably has little chance of making the team anyway?”

In the big picture, yes, because it’s one more draft pick that has value. They don’t have to use it this year, they can trade it for more or higher picks next year. Why are the Niners in an enviable position in this years draft? Because they have so many draft picks. They don’t have to use all of them and there is little chance that they will, but the unused picks can be traded for future picks that have tremendous value.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

BP I was simply ribbing Jack for being so plucky about a 6th round pick. Did I say that I didn’t agree with the trade? Did I say that I didn’t agree with the value? Did I say a single thing about not liking anything about the transaction?

All I did was point out that if it was a pick that we used it was likely a player that wouldn’t make the team, the suggestion is far from unrealistic.

The problem is that if we were standing in a room you would have seen the look on my face or heard the tone in my voice and realized I was just giving JH a bad time and that’s all.

      • BigP says:

        Coffee,
I hear ya. Words don’t always convey the tone.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Half the things I put on here are tongue-in-cheek and almost 100% of the time it gets taken the wrong way. No worries my friend.

    • claude balls says:

      Jack:

What I like about it, and the potential Ed Reed signing, is that the 49ers are giving themselves flexibility in the draft. By taking care of their “needs” (at least in the short term), they can focus on taking the BPA with their first 2 picks.

Or, and I know you aren’t in love with the idea, if other GMs screw up and a true impact player falls within range, Baalke can package some (some, not many) picks and move up to get him without worrying that they won’t have enough early picks to get a quality DL, pass rusher, DB, WR and second TE (if necessary).

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Claude,

Your first paragraph basically outlined the organizations philosophy under Baalke/Harbaugh.

      • claude balls says:

        Jack:

I know. I’ve been paying attention. The implementation of that philosophy is why

        (1) The team has been successful and will continue to be successful; and

        (2) I laugh when commenters criticize the 49ers for acting consistently with that philosophy or when they insist the 49ers make moves that would be inconsistent with it.
