49ers are not Carr’s only option

Free-agent quarterback David Carr had dinner last night with 49ers coach Mike Singletary and is spending time again this morning with coaches and club officials in Santa Clara, a league source.

The 49ers have the first opportunity to sign Carr, but three other teams remain interested in his services, according to the source.

The Giants want Carr to return as Eli Manning’s backup. The Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals are also legitimate options for Carr, if the 49ers are unable to sign him to a contract today.

Carr would likely take over as the 49ers’ No. 2 quarterback behind starter Alex Smith. The move would likely spell the end for Shaun Hill with the 49ers.

Not to be taken lightly in this whole episode, according to the source, are the comments attributed to Patrick Willis’ verified Twitter account, in which he did not express support for the team adding Carr to the roster. Willis is the best player on the team and one of the most-respected players in the locker room. Willis has since written that he would support Carr, if he were to sign with the 49ers.
