Here is what Jim Harbaugh said at his postgame press conference after the 49ers lost to the Rams 16-13.
HARBAUGH: It was a football fight and we did not. It will test our character as a team by the way our team competes and fights and plays with the effort that they do. I feel good about our guys and our character.
Q: How do you think Kaepernick played today?
HARBAUGH: I thought he made some very clutch plays, was under some pressure, backed-up field position and he made some outstanding plays. It was a tough game for a quarterback to play in. I thought he did well.
Q: Did you understand the safety call?
HARBAUGH: No.
Q: What did they tell you?
HARBAUGH: That the ball didn’t get past the line of scrimmage.
Q: Did you try to challenge?
HARBAUGH: They said I could not because it was a scoring play.
Q: Could you talk about the pitch to Ted Ginn Jr. that didn’t work out so well?
HARBAUGH: Yeah, that’s on us. That was the wrong play to call at that time. I would love to have that one back. Don’t blame the players on that one. That was too risky of a play at that time.
Q: Did you think it had the potential to catch the Rams off guard?
HARBAUGH: Yeah, we really felt like when we called it it was a safe play, but then when they got the edge pressure, Colin pulled and was forced to pitch right away. It threw the rhythm and the timing of the play off.
Q: This is the first time Colin has experienced adversity as a starter in the NFL. Is this good for him in a way?
HARBAUGH: Yeah, and for our whole team. It shows what you’re made of, how you handle adversity. We’ve got some. But still, our team played with tremendous effort and made clutch plays and got clutch stops. Gave our team a chance to win, but we didn’t get it done.
Q: Were the Rams taking away the deep passes?
HARBAUGH: There were some checkdowns that he was hitting early that were the result of taking away some downfield throws.
Q: At the end of regulation, Kaepernick scrambled and ran out of bounds. Would you like to have that one back?
HARBAUGH: Everything’s happening so fast out there. Sure, you would have liked to keep that one in bounds instead of going out of bounds, make them use another timeout.
Q: Is David Akers injured?
HARBAUGH: Not that any of us were aware.
Q: Do you know the extent of Manningham’s injury?
HARBAUGH: That’s a good question. We won’t know that right away in terms of how that will affect next week.
Q: Why do you think both games with the Rams were so close?
HARBAUGH: Both two great football fights. Good teams played hard. Physical football both games.
Q: Is there any questions who your starting quarterback is next week?
HARBAUGH: I’ll let you know if there’s a change, but right now I feel this will be the same as it was this week. I’m proud of Kap, proud of the way he played. He did some really good things under a lot of heat and duress. Handled himself well. Gave our team a chance to win.
