49ers waive QB Tom Savage and promote CB Tyvis Powell

The 49ers just announced they waived quarterback Tom Savage. In a corresponding move, they promoted cornerback Tyvis Powell from the practice squad to the active roster.

These moves are no-brainers. The 49ers need an extra cornerback this Sunday while Jimmie Ward is injured, and Savage isn’t ready to play yet — he’s still learning the offense. Powell fills an immediate need. Savage doesn’t. Next week, if Ward is healthy, I won’t be surprised if the 49ers release Powell and re-sign Savage.

What do you think of these moves?

    1. Darn, Jack. I figured you would give some of your more quality analysis such as the 49ers haven’t won a Super Bowl since ’94 or Rashaun Woods was a bust. Maybe even enlighten us about your superior hindsight play calling such as Kaepernick shouldn’t have thrown the end zone fade to Crabtree in the ’13 NFC Championship or complain after the fact that Shanahan should have run the ball after a pass play didn’t work out and vice versa.

Coach Hammer always has the right answers and if he doesn’t, GM Hammer is there to pick him up.

You said Shanahan has “his guys”, in what world does he have “his guys” already? Lynch and Shanahan inherited a 2-14 franchise with next to zero talent thanks to Baalke. He’s supposed to have all of the talent he needs midway through year 2 ?? (His two main guys are rehabbing ACL injuries, I’m sure you’ll blame them for that happening) If it was the end of year 3 or midway through year 4 then I would wholeheartedly agree but your agenda is ridiculous.

  1. Witherspoon is awful . The only reason he wasn’t abused more last year was because the other corner across from him donate Johnson was even worse. Jimmy Ward , the fact that he’s always hurt and doesn’t absolutely nothing when he does happen to play , makes that terrible salary the Niners are paying even worse

  2. Wasn’t it around this time that JG was picked up? Wonder what blockbusters could be in the worlds this year.

    1. I know some people would love Bell, but thankfully I doubt that will happen.

Interestingly, Conner has been performing just as well as Bell has historically. Is Bell really as good as advertised, or does that offense (and OL) play a pretty big role in Bell’s success?

      1. He’s the first to come to mind. But I certainly don’t want him. Wonder if there are other teams interested. Heard Cooper was being shopped around too.

  3. I wouldn’t be surprised if this becomes something of a weekly juggle. Whenever they have injuries they cut Savage at the end of the week and elevate someone from the PS. Then after the game release the player and re-sign to the PS, and re-sign Savage. Smart.

  4. There doesn’t appear to be much out there at the Edge and Corner positions in free agency……. Lawrence is a huge risk, as is Verrett with his injuries…….. as I said before, if AZ was looking to move Peterson, I would grab him- Cooper is interesting, but not sure the 49ers want to open their wallet for his next contract with his inconsistent production.

  5. I’m thinking Sherman owes Witherspoon a some of his bonus money. The way things are going Sherm will make the Pro Bowl without even getting thrown at. Bonus money is tied into making the Pro Bowl.. Nice..

    1. They had Savage in for the practices, and saw enough.
      .
      Just making a smart adjustment….

  6. IT IS THE obvious thing to do but will not make any difference in the game. We are in for another expended camp and practice session now.
