Yes, the 49ers can beat the Rams — here’s how

If the 49ers play as well as last week, they’ll still lose Sunday to the Los Angeles Rams.

But if the 49ers play just a little bit better, and finish the game strong, they can beat the Rams. They can beat anybody.

Here’s what the 49ers have to do to win Sunday.

  1. Grant Cohn says: Yes, the 49ers can beat the Rams
Dandy Don Meridith said: If ifs and buts were candy and nuts we’d all have a nice day.

  2. 1. A better approach would be to start strong, play sound football throughout, and finish strong.
    2. I agree, but they need to do the same with Breida and Co. in the passing game.
    3. Oh look, a burly man in a tutu dancing to the Nutcracker.?
    4. I agree with this.
    5. I’ll have what you’re having Grant, just as long as you can guarantee that I won’t end up in a viral video where I was singing “You Ain’t Nothin’ But A Hound Dog” to a stop sign while wearing my pants on my head.

  3. Getting Juice more involved in the passing game is a good idea, but they might need to leave him in as a blocker a fair bit too to help one of the OGs. This game they really need to feature Kittle. If there is a weakness in the Rams D it is covering the TE.

On D, yes, they need to play assignment sound. But they also need to pressure Goff. If that means blitzing more, so be it. Only times the Rams offense has been slowed down this year is when Goff is pressured.

    1. Only time the Rams offense has been slowed down is when they played Denver. Every other game….
Only way we win is if CJ wins a shoot out — or the Rams take the day off.

      1. Only time the Rams offense has been slowed down is when they played Denver.

Whom Gurley ran for 208 yards against.

        1. Defensively:

Surely they must stop Gurley, because their offense runs through him.

Sherman mustn’t let Cook up a storm.

Buckner needs to knock Goff’s head off.

          Offensively:

Attack their linebackers relentlessly with Kittle and Juice.

Force Suh and Donald to run sideline to sideline until their hands are on their hips. When they dip you dip we dip….

    2. I still don’t understand why Juice isn’t featured as much. They did call him an offensive weapon after all…

        1. He’s getting paid like a TE but isn’t really used as much. What do you attribute it to?

  4. 1. That hasn’t been a problem under Shanahan. Plus it’s Rams week.

    2. They have been. He was targeted 7 times against Arizona. They also left him back to pass protect against GB (as you have suggested).

    3. “Can they be super human?” No, but we can run at them to wear them out, hopefully picking up some yards along the way.

    4. “Shanahan has to learn how to run against a loaded box.” Agreed.

  5. This article sounds like something Sebnnoying would write. Point out the obvious and pretend people have never seen the game of football before.

    1. Prime, you write like you never have seen a game before, so you just devolve into snark and hurling insults.
      .
Whip out your Football for Dummies, and try to impress us.

  6. Don’t worry, I will post my 10 point plan tomorrow morning.

To summarize, they need to roll out Beathard more often and the DB’s need to pick up the receiver and heave him out of bounds. They can’t turn the ball over if they want to win. The student is ahead of the master at this point, I confidently think that is the case. I’m sipping on my cup o’ joe as I type this, it gives me thinking power :p

    1. Nice Sebbie cover… Too, there’s always the spread ’em wide and gash ’em up the middle approach, along with looking one way and throwing the other.

Oh, and no patting teammates on the head, and CJ needs to keep his tongue tucked away.

Any chance we can have Rudyard’s If recited once again?

    2. Why does Grant allow catfishing? Thought that was against site protocols.
      .
Thank goodness they cant steal my avatar.

      1. How about a full recitation of If? Rudyard’s of course, not If by Bread–your fav soft rock band from the 70s.

      2. Lol
Seb you sound like such a wuss…

‘I thought that was against site protocols’
lol. Haha. Yo your soft bro u cant comment on pro football anymore I think you should be banned haha

  7. Brilliant Coach Cohn, absolutely brilliant. How you are not a star in the NFL coaching ranks is beyond me. “Wow” would be the only word to desribe those remarkably unmistakable suggestions. The competition continues between coaches Cohn and Seb for the title “Captain Obvious”. I think Coach Cohn just took the lead with this doozy. Stay tuned for the “Legion of Duh” aka Seb.

  8. What a joke! The whiners win the Rams? No, this game we are not giving away by playing our second string..Rams will smash this last place joke of a so called team Go Rams

    1. Tell you what…. this season how ‘bout we play our second stringers like you did last season? That way we’re even, right?

  9. Sherman has made few plays because he hasn’t had many opportunities: He’s been thrown at just 10 times all season, according to Pro Football Focus. That indicates that he’s doing a good job of shutting down opposing wide receivers

Above is the number 1 reason Saleh should be fired……based on numbers one side of the field is locked down, so there is no excuse for not coming up with a better scheme to lock down the other half of the field……this should be easy to a DC with a brain…..

It really pathetic to think back and see opponents were beating us by them mostly focusing on half the field on pass plays……..

  10. Is this some sort of internet scam to get web site hits ?
    And make lots of money.
    Doing nothing.

      1. I feel strongly, Grant should send all us regulars a Press Democrat T-Shirt for our loyalty.

        1. At a minimum a Press Democrat beer coaster. No offense, but an 8×10 glossy of Grant would be rather lame…

          1. Cassie …
As long as it’s not his high school prom pic he has posted here ..but
            a current one .. instead… I wouldn’t mind

          2. Cassie

Lame, lazy, and limping is what Inside the 49ers is quickly becoming…pick up the pace Grant

  11. Can’t access the article due to a Press democrat advertisement that keeps overtaking the page, and there is no way to exit. very frustrating….

  12. Nice.
    .
    1. I agree, but the Niners also need to learn how to finish games.
    .
    2. Yes, they need to utilize Juice like a Swiss army knife. Use him as a blocker, runner and pass catcher. Try to find some mismatches.
    .
    3. I would like to see the Niners put Kittle on motion, pinch in Donald or Brockers, and roll out away from the other Ram. Then Kittle can run downfield and provide an easy target for CJB.
    .
    4. One way the Niners can counter the loaded box is to spread them out wide. Then, they could gash them up the middle with Juice, while Breida acts as a decoy.
    .
The best way the Niners can defeat the Rams is by playing disciplined and in control. Also, Saleh should learn from the Packers game, and stop starting out the game with zone coverage. Rodgers sliced and diced them. Then they went man to man, and the defense did better.

          1. Indeed I did. Fea–short for feary, a localized derivative of faery. Step your game up Sebbie….

  13. Vrabel should be forced to buy his own plane ticket home for that asinine decision to go for two.

      1. Put him in a glider and set him free at 63,360 feet with a book entitled learn how to fly in 10 minutes.

Lmao Vrabel out there taking chances like it’s Madden
      ————————
      Lol.

First the bonehead decision to go for it. All balls no brains kind of move. Second, you have the most run heavy offense in the league and you’re on the one yard line to win the game so let’s definitely attempt a pass. People like to quote that insanity is defined by the attempt to repeat the same action but expect a different outcome. So far NFL coaches are proving to be quite insane.

  14. Take the Rams. Give up the 9. 34-13. I look forward to reading about how they should have passed instead of run, or was it run instead of pass? Monday mornings are quite humorous.

  15. Sure, Niners can pull off the upset… I can win the Mega Millions too. I hate the f’king Lambs but the Niners’ best chance today is to keep Saleh’s Sieves (aka NFL’s 3rd worst D) off the field as much as possible… Take the fight to that Rams’ D and wear them down while controlling the ball. Good luck team. Off to find those winning numbers…

  16. You guys are funny for real..Now wonder y’all are so emotional afterwards, cuz of your ridiculous expectations…

This is a 49ers team with some heart but lacking talent and toughness…Facing the juggernaut…I have watched the Rams this year, they are the legitimate contender..What occured to me is they will only get better, takes time for OLs and Ds to gel… And their OL is already fantastic in pass pro…Beathard takes more hits in a Q than Goff has all season…

Do you really think the 49ers can get to Goff and remind him this is full contact football?

Beathard has to play smarter, some of the hits he takes are just stupid..One day he will find out what it’s like to not be able to get up, unfortunately

Grant’s advice is the worst you will ever read on ‘How to Beat the Rams’…Leaving Aaron Donaldson 1 on 1 is maybe the worst advice any columnist has wrote today, in any newspaper. Hey you can’t block everybody I dig it, but you need to freaking block that guy, he will single handedly destroy an offense.

Some of y’all did hit it tho I mean we want them going east and west…And going after the LBs in the pass game. The Rams surely know that, this is basic stuff, and will be interesting to see how they counter.

I think 2 TE sets (Should have kept McDonald, HORRIBLE trade!)with Juice out there as well, give the 49ers the best chance to run, play action, and protect Beathard. The only receiver we need on the field is Goodwin…Peters and Talib cant win their matchups when there’s noone to match up against!!

Let’s get Celek out there and allow him to do these stupid penalties on Suh, get in his head a lil bit, tell him bout his mommy u know. He can be knocked off his square, just not in the traditional sense…

Couple hotheads over there some team has gotta target that!

Anyway barring a lot of luck this game will probably be almost unwatchable. In watching the Rams we will see what we wish the 49ers were.

  17. This blog’s goal is to generate clicks…. See, you fell for it too, Mr. Realness. I don’t think many expect to win today (not even the Niners). But hey, anything’s possible right. Darren could finally get out of the crazy house; Grant could replace Shanahan at year’s end and Seb could be the most celebrated member of The Left Click (you go boy)…

  18. Meh. Next up there will be an article on how the Citadel can beat Alabama.
The talent differential is about the same.

  19. How the Niners beat the Rams:
    1. No Turnovers
    2. Force 3+ Turnovers
    3. Commit less than 40 yards in penalties
    4. Rams commit 75+ yards in penalties
    5. Niners allow 1 or less sacks
    6. Rams give up 3+ sacks

Odds of the above happening: 49-1 against.

  20. With these fresh throwbacks on, anything is possible. Didnt read the article but here’s my couple things they must do…….
    A. Pressure Goff, alleviating pressure on the short handed secondary.
    B. Run the ball and control the clock, thus keeping LA offense on the sidelines.
    C. Continue pounding it, EVEN in 4th qtr, up or down a score or two.
    D. Limit Cbj passing attempts, last week was perfect range mid 20s although a couple less and we upset GB.
    Sf 31-LA 28
Blue crew in 6 games as an added stone cold lock, go Dodgers!

  21. Watching the bears game… the best thing about getting Solomon Thomas… Not drafting Trubisky. He sucks!

  22. Team doesn’t need Grants 5 point pls or Sebs 10 point plan. The team needs to believe in them selves and execute the plan on both OFFENCE and defence with no bone head mistakes. Neither Grant or Sen is being paid to coach. Just play the game.

    1. “OFFENCE-DEFENCE”….?

Sponge… you must be from Canada or England ..
      cuz.. both spell it wrong, too … ;-}

    2. Sponge, I sure wish they would employ at least a couple of my suggestions, like not beating themselves and shooting themselves in the foot. McVay schooled KS. The Niners were unfocused and unprepared.
      .
When I stressed ball security, how did KS respond? He had walk through practices. Maybe they should have run some gauntlet drills where the ball carrier runs between 2 lines of players trying to rip out the ball.
