49ers add two coaches to defensive staff

According to reports, the San Francisco 49ers will hire Nick Sorenson and Asauni Rufus to their defensive coaching staff.

Sorensen will serve as a defensive assistant. He was an NFL safety from 2001 to 2010, playing for the Rams, Jaguars, and Browns. Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Miami Dolphins, Sorensen made his NFL debut with the Rams in the middle of the 2001 season. He recovered two fumbles for the Rams in the 2001 postseason, one of which came during their Super Bowl XXXVI loss to New England.

Sorensen began his coaching career with the Seattle Seahawks. He served as a special teams assistant from 2013 to 2016, winning two NFC Championships and Super Bowl XLVIII. From 2017 to 2020, Sorensen coached the Seahawks secondary.

This past season Sorensen served as special teams coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Sorensen’s hire was first reported by Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

Rufus will serve as a defensive quality control coach. He was a four-year starter at defensive back in college for Nevada from 2015 to 2018.

Rufus began his coaching career at his alma mater in 2019, serving as a graduate assistant. He moved to Notre Dame in 2020 to work as a special teams analyst under ex-Nevada head coach Brian Polian. Rufus then followed Clark Lea from Notre Dame to Vanderbilt in 2021 where he was a quality control assistant. He was expected to be a graduate assistant at LSU in 2022 before the 49ers came calling.

Bruce Feldman of The Athletic was the first to report the hiring of Rufus.

  1. What a joke. A terrible safety and a nobody that should still be at Nevada. Under qualified and over paid. But of course this is the same franchise that cut the best QB in the league and currently pays pretty boy Jimmy G millions to be the worst QB in the league. Next!

      1. Yawn. Wake me up when you realize the Yorks ruined this franchise right into the ground.

        1. Whoever you are, you are an idiot. 14 playoff appearances including 5 NFCCs, 3 SBs in the last 10 years. A couple dozen NFL franchises would kill for that same ruination.

If you are the same BAF that used to haunt these boards back in the day why don’t you go back under the rock you’ve been under as of late.

  2. What?!?!..Shanahan and Lynch probably didn’t even give a thought to bringing back the greatest player in 9ers history to work as an assistant….who might that be, you ask?
None other than ole #7 himself, Colin Sackorpick..the guy is an NFL legend..at least in BAF’s simple way of thinking

    1. Jack, it’s time to take control of your site ! Have you noticed how everyone is leaving because of this MORON
who keeps ripping the same tired old crap. I’m sure we all have enough going on without having to read this
nonsense. You can choose. I’ve been a long time reader, but an even longer niners fan (over 40 years).
Good Luck! I’ll consider coming back IF you take out the trash.

  4. I’ve always been curious about exactly what a Defensive Assistant and a Quality Control coach actually do. Are these the, “Hey kid go get my car washed and then take my dog for it’s grooming” guys? Or are they cutting up film, or what do they do? I went to a Warriors game and was fortunate enough to sit 2 rows behind the bench. There were basically about 10 guys in the 2nd row who did nothing but in-game analytics. Charted every possession and every shot. Provided the coaching staff with charts and stats upon request. These guys were nothing more than a gaggle of geeks who obviously never played in the NBA. Is that about what a QC or Assistant does?

  5. Unimpressive to say the least. Not sure what Lynch and Shanny are thinking. We need some top coaches quickly. The graduate assistant is a joke. Keep Turner as a draft evaluator at a minimum. It is a big blow to lose him.
