Trey Lance to quarterback 49ers “sooner rather than later”

During the NFL Annual Meeting, we’ve learned John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan are on the same page with their talking points regarding the 49ers quarterback situation.

Let’s start with their handling of Jimmy Garoppolo.

“We can’t upgrade our team by getting some good picks until people feel good about the surgery,” Shanahan told reporters Tuesday morning. “I’m alright with that. We’re not going to get rid of him just to get rid of him. Jimmy’s a good player that we all really like as a person and as a teammate. We’re going to wait to see what helps the 49ers the most.”

It’s clear that despite their inability to move Garoppolo through a trade, the 49ers continue to see him as an asset.

The possibility of Garoppolo being around the 49ers has been a source of uncertainty this offseason.

Could having the veteran around and not naming Lance the starter somehow hinders the second-year quarterbacks’ development?

“Trey’s working his tail off. He knows how I feel about him,” said Shanahan. “He knows what our expectations are for him, and I think he has a lot of respect for Jim, but the situation is clear. We’re trying to make a move to add some draft picks, and I think we were pretty close to it. And then Jimmy goes through surgery which changes things.

“I think Trey will understand all that and how to talk to him about it. Trey’s not an insecure guy, and I think this situation makes sense. There’s nothing sneaky going on about it. He’s confident he is going to come in and focus on playing football and focus on beating out whoever he has to.”

Reading between the lines of John Lynch’s comments on Monday, it seemed clear the 49ers plan is to move forward with Trey Lance as the starting quarterback in 2022.

Kyle Shanahan struck a similar tone when asked if what he’s seen of Lance is enough for him to take over as the starter.

“That’s why we looked into trading Jimmy,” responded Shanahan. “We obviously believe Trey can be the starter, and we are ready to do that.

“Jimmy’s done a great job for us. We brought Trey here to be that eventually, and I think that will be sooner rather than later.”

  1. Discussing JG is, to me, beating a dead horse! By now, It’s obvious that JG’s surgery changed his trade value and no one, including the 9er FO knows who, if anyone, will trade for him. So lets move on to the draft……PLEASE!
    * Finally! Glad to see JL and the 9er FO HAVE signed FA’s to improve ST
    * After signing FA DE’s Kerry Hyder and Jordan Willis, and Sampson Ebukam as the starter, I don’t believe the 9ers will sign another EDGE Rusher with draft pick #61 or #93.
    * Also, after signing FA CB Charvarius Ward, I don’t believe the 9ers will sign another CB with draft picks
    #61, or #93.
    * With pick #61, if he’s still available. I believe the 9ers could draft S Lewis Cline, to replace Tart.
    * With draft picks #93 and #105, I see the 9ers addressing IOL with UCLA OG/T Sean Rhyan and
    Kentucky OC Luke Fortner.
    * With draft pick #134 I like SMU WR Danny Gray. His 4.43s 40 gives the 9ers a deep treat. He’ll need
    to bulk up and add ~10 pounds.
    * With draft pick #172, I see NDSU RB Pierre Strong as a replacement for Raheem Mostert .
    * With draft pick #187. Virginia TE Jelani Wood, At 6’7″ X 259 and a 4.61s 40, gives Lance another red
    zone target
    * Draft pick #220: Kentucky DE Josh Paschal
    * Draft pick #221: Alabama CB Jaylan Armour-Davis
    * Draft pick #262: Toledo S Tycan Anderson…. (ST Gunner)
    * UDFA’s *
    * Baylor FS JT Woods
    * Georgia OG Justin Shaffer
    * N, Carolina RB TY Chandler

    1. I like your mock draft particularly the positions you went with, I am curious to see if they draft a safety in the 2nd or 3rd round, if not it shows you a lot about how they feel about Huf

      1. Hey Geep. My point is that Sudfeld must have made a big impression on Coach Shanahan and he shouldn’t be overlooked. If Lance struggles, I can envision Coach turning to him. He’s been enamored with no-name QBs before, like Hoyer.

  2. I’m in agreement with GEEP..the continued discussion about Jimmy Garoppolo is wearing us out..the main focus has to be on how to improve the current roster, particularly the offensive line, and to make Lance’s transition into the role of starter as smooth as possible…unfortunately the 9ers lack the draft capital to make a solid impact on the o line thru the draft..so I believe that trades on draft day are not off the table..should the right offer come along, don’t be surprised to hear a big name being moved…if the 9ers truly believe that he SB window is still open for them, then a major move needs to be made..they can’t put Lance on the field, and expect veteran caliber success, behind a questionable offensive front..it just doesn’t work
