Warners return home on nighttime flight

Free-agent quarterback Kurt Warner and his wife, Brenda, returned home to Arizona this evening. Now, the waiting begins.

The Warners spent about nine hours in the South Bay today before boarding a private jet out of San Jose tonight. Warner has an offer of two years, $20 million on the table from the Cardinals – the team he led to the Super Bowl two months ago.

Although it is not known specifically what the 49ers have offered, we can assume that it is more in line with the $14 million-plus annual salary Warner’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, is said to be seeking.

Warner underwent a physical today at Stanford. It is standard procedure for free agents who visit the 49ers. If they’re going to extend a contract offer to a player, they want to make sure they have addressed any health issues.

So what happens now? Warner, his family and his agent will get together and mull the offers. I’m sure they’ll inform the Cardinals of what the 49ers have offered and see if the Cardinals are willing to increase their offer. They’ll also see if there are any other teams that want to enter the picture. And, then, a decision will be made.

It’s pretty clear, based on previous statements, that if all things are equal, Kurt Warner wants to remain with the Cardinals.

And if all things are not equal? We shall see.

On Tuesday, Redskins free-agent defensive lineman Demetric Evans is scheduled to take a physical exam and meet with team officials in Santa Clara. There’s a good chance — unlike Warner — that he signs a contract before he leaves town. The 49ers are down one defensive lineman after Ronald Fields signed today with the Broncos. Fields reunites with Mike Nolan, the Broncos’ defensive coordinator.
