Training camp report: Wednesday, the good — Delanie Walker and Kendall Hunter

SANTA CLARA – The Niners practiced in shorts today, and some of the time it seemed like they were going half-speed – especially the linemen. The first team offense never faced the first team defense, either. Both starting units mostly faced scout teams – third string players fighting for roster spots.

Jim Harbaugh gave Vernon Davis the day off from drills, so Delanie Walker got the first-team tight end reps for a change and he caught six passes – two for touchdowns – within the first hour of practice. After the hot start, Harbaugh let him sit out the rest of practice with Vernon Davis. Walker looked like the best offensive player on the field today.

Kendall Hunter looked like the second-best offensive player. Every time he ran, he gained about 10 yards. He mostly caught screen passes and ran sweeps around the outside, but he’s been terrific on those plays all of training camp.

Randy Moss caught a jump ball from Colin Kaepernick for a touchdown over third-string cornerback Anthony Mosley.

Perrish Cox broke up a deep jump ball from Scott Tolzien. The 40-yard pass was intended for A.J. Jenkins in the end zone, but Cox outmuscled him for position and then jumped over him to knock the ball away.

A.J. Jenkins caught one pass – a 20-yarder from Colin Kaepernick at the end of practice. Jenkins beat Mosley on a deep crossing route.

LaMichael James, who sat out Tuesday’s practice with astomach flu, returned to practice today and took most of the running back snaps with the third-team offense.

Is it me, or does this Friday game feel like it might be a blowout of epic proportions because the 49ers have so much depth?

    • f49er says:

      No,

You’re not the only one but then again it is a Pre-season game so I don’t put alot of stock into these games.

I tend to just look at how the 2nd & 3 string players respond and look at their individual matchups. There’s so many players to key on which makes this 1st Pre-season game the most exciting ever because of all the Depth the 49ers have. Should be fun to watch.

  2. Jack Hammer says:

    Grant,

On Sirius NFL Radio this afternoon Boone mentioned that he is still preparing to be the swing tackle in addition to his RG duties. I know there is a long way to go, but how do you see the O Line situation playing out right now?

  3. rebelscum74 says:

Do you see the Ninners making a move for a veteran tackle has a back linemen if Boone wins the guard position, I agree their is a lot more depth overall on this team this year but the line seems short on depth, especially at tackle.

  4. James says:

You know, I used to give you a decent amount of crap for this thing or the other. But these Good/Not-So-Good articles have become a staple in my Niners news gatherings. Thanks a bunch man.

  5. 49erForlife says:

Hey Grant, two things I wanna ask here. Number one, has Kendall Hunter improved his skills as an inside runner? Also, number two, has Jason Slowey showed any promise whatsoever?

    vikings 7 9ers 35

  7. John40Niner says:

Remember one thing. What you will probably see is plain vanilla football from the Niners on both sides of the ball. They won’t be giving anything away to the other teams before the season starts. On the other hand, it wouldn’t matter if they did, the other team cannot count on figuring out what the Niners plan on running for any given formation. WCO GOLD!

    • CTNiner says:

      @John40Niner

I agree. Preseason will be used to decide QB order and see how our 2nd string depth is. Niners wont do anything to show any of their poker hand before game one against the Pack.

  8. fireandice51 says:

Is it just me, or does it seem that there is an absence of any commentary on LaMichael James. Drafted in the 2nd round, I would think he would be making some waves, but Kendall seems to have him completely covered.

    @Jack:

Re: Sirius-XM’s Moving the Chains Broadcast from the 49ers Training Camp

I only caught the Baalke interview, a few callers, and the replay of the Harbaugh interview. Any chance you can give us a summary of the other interviews and of Kirwan’s and Ryan’s thoughts on the 49ers?

    Thanks in advance.

    • Penry Pooch says:

Ryan is a local guy(lives in Danville) and is always high on the team. Has always been supportive of Alex and loves the teams chances this year.

Kirwin is pretty much in the same boat except he’s clearly not a Smither. He constantly points out the limitation of down field passing with Smith and does’t seem to think he’ll ever improve in that area.

Both guys realize the team has an elite defense and an above average offense. They’re aware that our division doesn’t offer much competition and expect that we’ll be back in the playoffs with little problem.

  10. old coach says:

Watch A. Dixon closely tomorrow night if he looks good in the first 2 preseason games i’m predicting a trade to the raiders for a draft pick in the 13 draft.

    • FDM says:

I think tomorrow night will be a run show personified. A heavy dose of Dixon,James, Hunter, and maybe some Jacobs. This is what the Niners do every preseason, run the ball and then run it some more. I hate preseason, its a joke! The teams dont show much and really its a practice. The NFL needs to go to two preason games, one this week, then another in two weeks and then start the season.

      • Penry Pooch says:

Preseason isn’t a joke, charging full regular season ticket prices for a preseason game is the joke.

For everything the NFL does and is doing to enhance the gameday experience you’d think they would have figured out by now that people are sick of paying full price to watch the third stringers scrimmage against each other.

If fans were smart, which they aren’t, they’d stop attending the preseason games until the league made a change. If you want a billionaire to take notice then do something that causes him to not make as much money and suddenly you will have his attention.

Pre-season should be next to free to watch, they’ll still make plenty of money off of parking and concessions and do so without gouging fans for a second rate game experience.

To all my fellow loyal bloggers:

Want to say thanks for helping make the off season go by a little quicker. Your wisdom and humor has made it a little easier to bare. We are soon going to find out about our team, I just want to say thanks to the bloggers who come making this site almost as a ritual:

Grant, Hof, Old Coach, Lemons, Bay, Jordo, AES, Prime, oneniner, Hammer, DS, Razor, Adam, Big P, Tuna, Crab, MidWestNiner, FDM, Neal, NickRow, Latino Heat, Tim, Rocket, MD, Grumpy Guy.

All are Niner fans, that enjoy debate and very seldom agree with one another. I am sure I left someone out, having a brain cramp doing this.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Under, good stuff and totally agree. The debates can often set this site on fire but everyone is a 9er fan. I’ll be toasting this comment in about an hour. Cheers!!

    • undercenter says:

      Claude and Ribico also.

    • Nick Row says:

Well said under center. Let’s get this baby started

    • MidWestNiner says:

Not a problem Undercenter. Let’s hopr we fans are soon debating how badly the Niners will pummel their opponent in the Super Bowl at the end of the season. GO NINERS!!!
