49ers still need a deep-threat wide receiver

I like the Anquan Boldin trade for the 49ers. It’s a steep price to pay for his salary – $6 million in 2013 – but cheap in terms of draft picks – just a sixth rounder.

Yes, the 49ers virtually had nothing at wide receiver other than Michael Crabtree, and no guarantees that any of the also-rans and maybes at WR on the current roster could step in and contribute next fall. Other than the Niners, name a team coming off of a Super Bowl appearance to have only one legitimate WR on its roster.

My only worry is that Boldin, like Crabtree, is not a deep threat, although he definitely is a red zone factor.

Vernon Davis remains the one and only deep threat on the Niners.

AJ Jenkins. We don’t know what type of production he can bring, but he definitely is a speedster and should have somewhat of a factor in that regard.

    • Highpriest333 says:

I hope Jenkins turns into a legitimate receiver. Also on a side note, Grant I have a suggestion for. the blog. I would love the ability to like or dislike a comment.

  2. Jack Hammer says:

Once they release Manningham the cap hit will be $2.05 million…..

    • Grant Cohn says:

      Good info. Thanks, Jack.

      • TIM says:

Why release Manningham unless he is not recovering well ? Boldin replaces Moss on the roster, not Manningham.

And VD and Jenkins and Williams are all speedsters.

    • rocket says:

I don’t think they can cut Manningham until he is able to pass a physical can they? If that’s the case might as well keep him as I think he’s on the books for 3.5 to 4 mill. With the way things have gone at WR the past two years they should keep all options open.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

There’s something called waived/injured; aka injury settlement. Sorry, I can’t recall the rules or details.

  3. MikeinSF#2 says:

Grant – The Patriots won multiple Super Bowls withOUT even a #1 receiver. I think AJ or Mario is their deep threat.

    • mike says:

no for both……one is in the training room ’til October and the other is too immature and not ready for prime time………..

      • MontanaMan16 says:

And you are so knowledgable about this how? Because that’s what you read somewhere? Most first year wr’s contribute nothing! The biggest improvement comes in year 2. JH said that not the media!

  4. BigP says:

At least there are no Stanford TE’s running around in their underwear to talk about.

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Yet. Much squabbling yet to do before the draft, LOL! And actually, I like both the Stanford TEs at the right spot.

    • MikeinSF#2 says:

I thought for sure Grant would have a HUGE Zach Ertz crush given he is better than Fleener and the Niners may need a #2 tight end.

  5. Scooter_McG says:

Jenkins and Williams will have a shot at filling that role, and I expect a WR will be drafted early to add to the mix. I like Wheaton as an option in the 2nd round, but there should be quite a few decent options available in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

  6. Niner in Florida says:

I like the trade for Boldin… We better get a corner to cover Percy

  7. BigP says:

Niners and the Hawks both 5-1 favorites to win the Super Bowl.

    • BennyBlanco says:

2 years laughing stock of the league n now everyone is on the NFC WEST’S nutz! haha Seattle does scare me though but I think the X-Factor is Wilson vs CK7 and I think we have a better QB and system. We def need a stud corner though.. last was tough at times to watch.

      • EB Niner says:

My biggest fear about the Hawks is Russell Wilsons elusiveness. He made the Niners look silly in that last game and he pretty much did the same thing to the Redskins and Falcons. They very easily could have been in the Championship game.

We need that complimentary pass rusher at DE or outside situationally. Either Darius Fleming comes on like gangbusters after his preseason injury last year or we get the right guy in the draft!

    • Grimey9er says:

NFC West = Best division in the NFL

  8. AES says:

    Agreed Hammer.
Manningham will likely be a cap casualty since AB could fill in at his spot.
I also have my qualms about K.Williams because if A.J. has a strong TC he could become the 3rd WR.

We still have our 31st and 34th picks (which I hope we don’t trade) to add to the mix. We could really fortify ourselves with a D-lineman, a WR or DB with those picks.

We have improved ourselves (Boldin) for the immediate future and are now a few players from solidifying our future for years to come.

    • EB Niner says:

The Niners have waaay too many picks to be of use. I am actually concerned that they get the value out of those picks. I’d like to see packaged deals to move up, not only this year, but next.

Niners only need a handful of selections this year. Only a few guys can even make the team, so more than 7 picks is probably overkill. Thus, I’d like to end this draft, whatever they do with this year’s picks, to have two number one picks for next year. Maybe they can move into #1 pick for Clowney next year!

Ok, so I’m dreaming, but why not try. There has to be something worthwhile to do when you have this many picks.

  9. MidWestNiner says:

Where do you see them getting that deep threat from Grant/

    • Grant Cohn says:

The draft, probably. What do you think?

      • MidWestNiner says:

I agree. I’ll have to take a look at the options, but as of right now I think they might trade up to draft Tavon Austin.

      • Scooter_McG says:

Why Austin MidWest? Despite his speed he’s more of a slot and underneath WR in the mold of Harvin or Welker, but Boldin and Crabtree will play the the slot for the 49ers.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Like I said that’s right now before I look at the options Scooter.

      • Yosemite Sam says:

Haven’t we learned anything? You cannot rely on rookies to provide a critical function of your receiving scheme (AJ Jenkins, Rashaun Woods, that forgettable USC kid, JJ Stokes and even Michael Crabtree). Rookies disappoint more often than not…

      • MidWestNiner says:

First, a rookie WR is a idea because there stands a good chance of Crabtree pricing himself out of San Francisco after next season Yosemite. And second, Crabtree wasn’t a disappointment during his rookie year.

    • Coffee's for closers says:

If K. Allen makes it out of the top 15 do they make a move for him? They did meet with him.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Except for the occasional dropped passes that were catchable he is in the mold of Anquan Boldin so I don’t see him being drafted by the Niners.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Allen is a lot faster then Boldin.

      • MidWestNiner says:

But still in the mold of Boldin. I don’t think the Niners will have three WRs with a similar skillset, especially if Harbaugh wants a downfield threat.

      • dc9er says:

K Allen would be a good pick up, Boldin is not a long term solution.

      • MidWestNiner says:

I’m not arguing with that dc9er. I just don’t think that the Niners will do so.

  10. gw2 says:

Manningham & Moss will just about cover it. For the deep threat, AJ will save us! just as soon as he finds the real killers. Oh wait, that was OJ.

  11. oneniner says:

why are you guys fooling yourself……..this was a terrible pick up.

he is an older version of crabtree……..what we need is young legit number 2 (i.e wallace)

we have VD, TE2 and a FB (don’t forget the olinemen) to catch passes in the middle of the field and crabtree to catch passes on the sideline……..Boldin would crowd the middle…..

what CK needs is someone he can throw to deep when he scrambles (which is 75% of the time) ….kinda like Big Ben used to do….

  12. JR San Diego says:

With Crabs, Boldin, VD and IF AJ can emerge to take the top off a defense, I love to say it, but CK’s running just got even more dangerous. The secondary fleeing down the field, CK picking up “safe run” chunks of 10-25 yard runs could completely demoralize a defense.

We could finally see the offense coming out and regularly moving down the field in 5-6 plays covering 60 yards to the opposing redzone. That would be fun to see.

    • George says:

Yes, it would be fun and I would like to see it sometimes. But on a regular basis it would be bad for our defense.

  13. dreamseason1984 says:

Grant, is it wrong for me to still want Danny Amendola? The Niners could just forget about the deep game and instead have the best short to intermediate passing game in NFL history.

  14. Jack Hammer says:

    2012 regular season

    Crabtree 85 rec 1105 yds 13.0 avg 9 TD
    Boldin 65 rec 921 yards 14.2 avg 4 TD

    • pete4mtx says:

      Boldin #s are better than:
      K williams
      T ginn
      R moss
      Aj jenkins….. combined

      • EB Niner says:

Might a well throw in Hastings as he’s coming back and did as much as AJ did nad Chad hall (yeah, I know he’s gone, but it makes the point).

So, if you give each of them a million a piece you still you over paid them compared to Boldin.

Plus, with Walker up in the air, we need another viable threat who can actually catch the ball.

Besides, what’s wrong w/VD being the deep threat? It’s usually a receiver and that will be nice, but it’s an asset other teams have to get from a WR because you don’t see it from a TE.

  15. oneniner says:

are these the same fans that complained about a conservative offense….with boldin we just got extremely conservative

    • oneniner says:

Difference between an explosive offense and a offense ran by an explosive QB…….

The Packers have a solid wide receiver corps with James Jones, Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb all capable performers.

The niners have Crabtree and Boldin……….cmon give me a break!!!!!

    • pete4mtx says:

      Relax oneniner
This guy catches everything gets thrown his way…Boldin will be s difference maker

    • MidWestNiner says:

      Not once but twice. Yikes.

  16. connus says:

Before we get too excited about Wide Receivers in this draft, I hope we remember that A.J. Jenkins was not that unique last year. Can anybody name one WR drafted last year who really added a charge to his team’s offense, that really made a significant impact, especially in the deep game?

    • Grimey9er says:

      T.Y. Hilton.

    • George says:

Right on the money. It takes wide receivers a while.

    • tkamB says:

      TY Hilton

      • Allan says:

That would be the exception that confirms the rule.

Last year those were the receivers selected before Hilton:
Justin Blackmon, Michael Floyd, Kendall Wright, A.J. Jenkins, Brian Quick, Stephen Hill, Alshon Jeffery, Ryan Broyles, Rueben Randle, DeVier Posey, T.J. Graham, Mohamed Sanu

None of them had particular good seasons, so either they are all busts or WRs in general do take a little more time to develop and Jenkins might have a much better year in 2013.

      • EB Niner says:

All the more reason to sign a WR who knows what he’s doing and now…perhaps get Cribbs or someone else to take the lid off.

If we use the above results to tell us what it looks like, we would be stupid to believe we get our deep threat, our missing ingredient from the draft.

  17. Shwa dawg says:

I’d like to the 49ers trade up to get Austin/Paterson use kc’s 2nd on lsu’s safety Reid honey badger with next 2nd and take a run at getting latimore next and “red shirt” him next year. Just in time for Gores time to be up.

    • tkamB says:

No to Patterson, guy has terrible hands, but would love to get Austin. He would really make this offense complete and hes basically a Percy Harvin clone.

  18. Jack Hammer says:

    Ed Reed to 49ers….

The reports on Jenkins from training camp cannot come soon enough. I hope the young man has embraced the challenge, and responds….

    • Nick says:

      Razor

I’m not sure if you can teach work ethic.

      • EB Niner says:

Yeah, what’s up with that? Didn’t his college coach sing his praises for learning the game and his commitment to it? Maybe I just remember him talking about how smart he was. There was no evidence of that last year.

When exactly was he going to take JR up on his invite? Any time now would be good!

Maybe we are just cursed to make bad WR picks in the first round since we were blessed w/JR.

  22. 49er42 says:

Boldin is a great pickup. He catches passes that very few receivers can. He is very tough; remember him playing with a broken jaw. He also does get open deep because he has to be played so tight and physical.
Speed helps, but Davis is very fast and Crabtree does get open down the sidelines. Williams has good speed, assuming he recovers and if they get Cribs they have speed there too.
Everyone loves speed, but moving the chains is key to winning football; see Walsh, Bill.

    • George says:

      As per PFF:
“The 49ers have acquired a receiver who only dropped two of 67 catchable balls, seeing him finish the year with the leagues fifth best drop rate.”

    • Nick says:

      49er42

Well said. Boldin has great ball skills and hands. Speed is over-rated. This guy can make plays down field, up field, left field, and right field. “Take the top off” and incorrectly associating it with speed is a convenient phrase used by those who don’t really understand football.

      • pete says:

Yup. Boldin fights for the ball like he gets a world champ belt if he comes down with it. Love receivers like that.

    • AES says:

      49er42,
I can’t say that I love the deal, but I’m good with it. Boldin is not the speedy younger WR I’m hoping for, but he is a physical player who knows how to maneuver his body to make the tough catches.

That ability alone makes me feel much better when going up against the likes of Seattle’ DB’s.

I believe that A.J. will gave us the deep threat we need and that we draft the type of speedy WR between 2-3 rd to also help shore up the outside as well.

Things are starting to get interesting around here. I would love Tavon Austin in the 1st, but he won’t be there at 31. Justin Hunter more then likely will, but he could be had with our 34th. With our 31st pick I’m starting to lean towards Jesse Williams. He could lock-down our NT position for the next 5-7 years, and Justin Hunter could be brought along at a feasibly moderate pace.

  23. George says:

Here is some highlights of the Kaep interview on ESPN earlier today:

  26. KezarMike says:

Gee, I hate taking a WR in the first round. Most of those picks fail. Especially when you can get a good corner or pass rusher. I’d rather draft JUST corners and defensive lineman in the first few rounds and then draft 2 or 3 receivers in the later rounds. Yeah, every now and then you get a Gene Washington or Jerry Rice in the first round, but that hardly ever happens. Look what happened last year. Still, NONE of us know how good AJ Jenkins is. Bad sign that he didn’t play last year, but ….. let’s at least wait for camp this year. We’ll know by mid August probably if he is a bust. My guess? The 49ers sign one or two FA receivers, and use one of the #2 picks on one, maybe even trade up in the 2nd if they love someone (though I still want 2 or 3 corners in this draft).

  27. EastCoastWestCoastOffense says:

Edleman would be a good option and cheaper

  28. Brodie2Washington says:

Anquan Boldin was due to be released. Not surprise it only costs a 6th rounder. The Ravens needed the cap space.

Worries… he will be 33 in October. Comes at a high cap price, which reduces the Niners ability to acquire big name free agents. Also reduces chances of a Goldson, RJF, Walker deal.

Likes… Experience. Strength. QBs love his understanding of the game. Preparation freak that leads by example (great for Jenkins). The 49ers now get to say to Seattle’s tall CBs “now pick on someone your own size.” Chain mover and red zone threat.

    Overall happy with the move.

  29. fesnyc says:

i was starting to sour on this trade, but before I hit bottom I read Kawakami’s take and i think its a good one. still sour, but a bit more thoughtful about it.

I’ve been kinda hoping i was going to get another Christmas/Hannukah present, in the form of another Niner SB win or a great young deep threat for 2013, but it hasnt happened. so i’m a bit ticked.

my gripe is, as McCloughan noted, Crabtree and Boldin are the same receiver – very solid, arguably great (Crabs seems to have turned the corner w Kaep as qb), but now my nephew has enough speed to play free safety for our opponents. I dont like the spectre of that free safety lurking closer to the line while Kaep is running the pistol.

my biggest gripe is indirect: this could be, as TK notes, effectively an indictment of the Jenkins pick. If AJ had shown any promise, would we be spending big FA money on a WR? maybe, but not likely.

the argument TK makes which settles it for me, but which still grates, is the following question: how would we have fared with 1st and goal from the 6th if we had Boldin in the arsenal. Dont tell me Harbaugh and Baalke arent still agonizing over four plays which defined the difference between American immortality and spending an an offseason asking yourself “what else could i have done?” Fricking ouch. I just hope the decision is a good one. In Harbaugh/Baalke I will continue to trust.

    • rocket says:

      fesnyc,

Don’t be ticked. It’s a really solid move that costs them nothing but a 6th round pick and no money beyond this year. While this could be viewed as an indictment on Jenkins, I think it’s more about seeing an opportunity to improve the team with little risk and resources. I agree with you in that they still don’t have the great deep threat at WR, but Jenkins is going to be given that opportunity and Kyle Williams when healthy has good speed so they aren’t devoid of it. They will most likley take a guy in the draft to develop but as of now they are better off at WR than they’ve been since Harbaugh arrived.

I wouldn’t put too much stock in FS’s being able to play up close either. Boldin averaged 14 yards a catch last season with not a lot of it being RAC. He is not a close to the LOS player. He makes plays downfield by taking the ball away from defenders with his size and strength. He’s not going to blow by anybody but they aren’t going to outfight him for the ball either.

    • Brodie2Washington says:

      Match-ups could play a role.

Seattle has big, talented CBs that officials are allowing to be physical past the designated 5 yards. In the last game Crabtree had a heck of a time getting separation.

AB’s stock in trade physicality making contested catches.

  33. Jack Hammer says:

From Jason LaCanfora…”Perhaps Mike Wallace will get $12M a year, but sounds like Harvin is averaging more than that in his new deal with Seattle”

  34. MidWestNiner says:

Looking at the draft options, the WRs that I think could be the deep threat for the Niners are Tavon Austin, Markus Wheaton, and Da’Rick Rogers. Austin is the smallest of them but he is also the quickest and a great return man. Wheaton is quick as well and great against press coverage but struggles with route-running and the problem of alligator arms in traffic. Da’Rick Rogers is compared to Julio Jones but has had maturity issues on and off the field. Of these three, I think Austin will fit the Niners best due to the Boldin trade. Imagine a rifle armed throw from Kaep to a blur streaking down the field in Austin. Tantalizing, isn’t it?

    • George says:

It appears that Baalke isn’t put off by maturity issues, as long as he thinks the guy plays and trains hard, plays for the team, and is not a gangster. Given enough time, most guys grow up, especially when they have taskmasters on their back and older players to serve as role models. Case in point is Jenkins. Besides which, and I know you know this but will say it anyway because I am didactic, our offense is complicated and it takes longer for someone who has not played in the NFL to master it. I plead ignorant to knowing whether Baalke and staff like any of the players you have mentioned.

      • MidWestNiner says:

I plead ignorant to knowing whether Baalke and staff like any of the players you have mentioned.

I second that plea. I also agree with what you said about the maturity issues but I think the opportunity to add competition at both the receiving and returning positions will be too much for a two guys like Baalke and Harbaugh who love versatility to pass up. That’s just my opinion though.

      • George says:

Sorry, I wasn’t being clear. It would be great to have a Julio Jones type player, so all I was saying was that, if they really like Rogers, maybe his immaturity won’t stop them from drafting him.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Don’t worry George. I wasn’t disagreeing with you but just trying to select a guy based on what I think Baalke and Harbaugh’s criteria is.

      • George says:

No worries. Who’s got it better than us???

      • MidWestNiner says:

        NOOOBODY!!!!

    • Scooter_McG says:

MidWest, where are you getting the info on Wheaton struggling with route running and alligator-arming over the middle? First I’ve heard of either of those knocks on him. Closest I’ve seen is he can take too many steps at the top of his routes, but overall he gets pretty good marks for route running from most people. And I haven’t heard any questions about his toughness over the middle.

This scouting report in fact completely refutes both of those claims.

      http://edraft.com/nfl/news/2013-nfl-draft-markus-wheaton-scouting-report/

    • dc9er says:

Tavon Austin is gonna be either the second coming of Percy Harvin or Dexter Carter. Gonna be interesting to say the least which one he’s gonna be.

    • George says:

Sorry, I wasn’t being clear. It would be great to have a Julio Jones type player, so all I was saying was that, if they really like Rogers, maybe his immaturity won’t stop them from drafting him.

  41. Wilson says:

I was frightened of Boldin before the Super Bowl – for good reason, as it turned out. Put the ball anywhere close, and even if he’s well defended, he’ll come down with it. A scary offensive weapon. Crabtree and Boldin, indefensible. One or more of our other wide receivers and/or Vernon should be fine for stretching the field.

A sixth rounder? That’s a pure salary dump for Baltimore, one of the results of that ridiculous contract for Flacco. Good luck to them in years to come, and thanks for the gift.

Wide receivers are no longer a position of need. Move on to defensive backfield and defensive line.

  42. michael says:

Merry Christmas Eve everyone got a Boldin today hopefully alot more tomorrow was hoping for Harvin but Boldin is nice really hope we can get Walker back than we will be set on offense. Need a returner and DB’s.

  43. 49er42 says:

Niners are not going to take a wide receiver in the first round unless they bring Matt Millen in.
Would it be better to have one choice in each of the first four rounds or four second reound choices?

    • MidWestNiner says:

Unless you are part of Baalke and Harbaughs’ mindsets there is no way you can know for sure that the Niners won’t draft a WR in the first round. Baalke has shocked us fans twice now. A third time would just be part of his normal routine. I wouldn’t be surprised if they traded out of both the first and second rounds.

  44. BigP says:

The Seahawks gave up a 1st and 7th this year, a mid round pick next year, and it’s being reported that they are going to pay Harvin around $12 million per season. I’m blown away by how much they are investing in this guy, it’s not like they’re getting Megatron or Fitzgerald. SMH, yikes.

    • MidWestNiner says:

What scares me is if Crabtree will want more than that after his contract is up.

      • BigP says:

I just find it ridiculous that they are giving that much money to a guy that isn’t a prototypical #1 receiver. When you add the draft compensation involved, it seems like a desperate move.

      • BigP says:

If Crabs keeps producing and improving, it may be inevitable. Same for CK.

      • Scooter_McG says:

MidWest, that is definitely a concern. That is why it is important the 49ers don’t just sit on the Boldin pick up at WR. They still need to draft a WR early as Boldin isn’t a long term solution and Crabtree may price himself out of staying in San Fran in the future.

I’m just waiting to see if it all blows up in their face toward the end of the season if he gets hurt again.

      • gr8lake says:

Since the 9ers play them twice maybe they will have something to do with that. One can only hope.

  45. Jack Hammer says:

According to Schefter, Detroit & Tampa Bay are leading candidates for landing Goldson. Good luck with that Dashon….

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Well Detroit is probably no worse than Philly, warmer indoors. Tampa is showing some signs but they’re way behind in their division. I heard Pats are interested but they won’t overpay. If I were him I’d have my agent get a little cozy with GB or Indy.

  46. #7 says:

Manningham (if healthy) is a very good receiver, as is Kyle Williams, and we still have A.J. What we need is improvement in our secondary.

Ricardo Lockette scouting report: Anyone see this?

MidWest, could be a Julio Jones?

    • Brotha Tuna says:

OK, not to be too snarky but:
      “NFL Player Comparison: Fendi Onobun”
Bwahahahahaha! What? Who? C’mon, LOL. Sorry, SF signed him so maybe they think they can develop him, but two teams already tried. I hope he comes along but not holding my breath on Lockette. I’ve been wrong before and I’ll be happy to eat some crow on this as needed. Maybe one day he’ll be another Fendi Onobun!

    • George says:

BT, not saying I’m right, just dreaming a little.

      • George says:

After you mentioned him, I looked up that guy Fendi. Has seen a lot of locker rooms.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

I hope you know I’m playing around. Not too sure how well I’d do if anyone was keeping score on me!

    • MidWestNiner says:

More of a diamond in the rough type than a Julio Jones type George. But who knows? He is working out with Kaep this off-season so he could turn out to be a good WR.

  48. Hov says:

braylon Edwards didn’t work moss kinda worked now bolden hopefully it works better.

    • MidWestNiner says:

Edwards was all about his self before he even thought about the team concept. Moss was a guy who didn’t take to his role on offense as evidenced in his pre-Super Bowl statement. In Boldin we will have a proven WR that will fight for every bsll thrown his way.
