49ers – Raiders Live Blog

This is the live blog for the San Francisco 49ers (11-4) week 17 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders (6-9) from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. I will provide updates and analysis throughout the game.

11:40 Happy New Year’s everyone. Thank you for the support and following along all season.

49ers inactives: Jimmy Garoppolo, Kevin Givens, Deebo Samuel, Akeem Spence, Kemoko Turay, Nick Zakelj

Turay was elevated from the practice squad yesterday but is inactive. This was likely a move to give him an additional game check.

12:00 According to various reports, Trey Lance underwent a second surgery on his right ankle to remove hardware that was inserted during his first surgery. The quarterback had been dealing with irritation during his rehab.

Lance will be on crutches for about two weeks but remains on schedule to be ready for the start of OTA’s this spring.

12:51 Philadelphia is trailing New Orleans 20-10 at the two-minute warning. If that score holds and the 49ers take care of business today the number one seed in the NFC will be up for grabs on the final weekend of the season.

1:05 49ers will be on defense to start the game.

1:10 Ugly start for the 49ers defense. Jarrett Stidham goes 3-3 for 68 yards on the opening drive, finishing it off with a 24-yard touchdown to Darren Waller. Waller beat Talanoa Hufanga on a deep corner route.

That drive looked a lot like the opening drive against Atlanta.

1:20 Terrific response by the 49ers offense. Christian McCaffrey gains 53 yards on three carries including a 37-yard burst over the right side on third and three which moved the ball down to the Raiders one. Brock Purdy connects with Bradon Aiyuk to tie the game at seven.

The 49ers offense has an advantage today with Chandler Jones and Denzel Perryman out. Did a good job of taking advantage of it there.

1:32 San Francisco’s defensive line has been beat on the Raiders first two possessions. Las Vegas has gained 49 yards on its first 10 carries and Jarret Stidham has shown himself to be functional in the passing game.

The Raiders get down to the five before the 49ers stiffen up and force a 20-yard field goal.

49ers 7 Raiders 10

1:39 End of the first quarter. The 49ers have run only 12 offensive plays. They were in 21 personnel for seven of their first ten and 11 personnel for three. They moved to 12 personnel for the final two plays, a two-yard gain on third and one and a two-yard loss on the next, both carries by McCaffrey.

1:45 Aaron Banks is down and the left guard is grabbing his right knee.

1:48 Daniel Brunskill replaces Banks.

1:52 Brock Purdy becomes the first 49ers quarterback since Jeff Garcia in 2001 to throw at least two touchdowns in five consecutive games. On third and goal from the two Purdy bailed out of the pocket to his left and lofted a pass to George Kittle in the back of the endzone.

The touchdown capped off a 13 play, 75 yard drive.

49ers 14 Raiders 10

1:59 Deommodore Lenoir is struggling right now.

2:04 Las Vegas drives down to the 49ers 2 but the San Francisco defense stuffs Josh Jacobs on fourth and one.

Penetration from Arik Armstead created a wall, and the 49ers defense swarmed the back for a loss of one.

2:10 Kyle Juszczyk gains five but Trent Williams is called for holding leading to third and five. Purdy is unable to find anyone open on third down and is forced to throw it away.

Las Vegas will take over with good field position on the 49ers side of the field.

2:22 Jarrett Stidham is dealing. The quarterback hits Davante Adams in the back left corner of the endzone for his second touchdown throw of the game to give the Raiders a 17-14 lead.

2:34 Halftime Raiders 17 49ers 14

Jarrett Stidham was more than functional in the first half going 11-14 for 145 yards with a pair of touchdowns. The quarterback has proven to be a threat to run as well, picking up 31 yards on five attempts. Stidham has been helped by Josh Jacobs and Brandon Bolden. The two backs gained 70 yards on 14 carries in the opening half.

2:41 Quick three and out by the 49ers offense. Purdy threw inaccurately to McCaffrey on second down and his third down completion was for a loss of one.

Purdy’s longest completion today has gone for nine yards.

2:49 A facemask by Fred Warner extends the Raiders drive and Jarrett Stidham makes the 49ers pay. Stidham broke contain and found Adams uncovered downfield for a 60-yard touchdown.

The 49ers are in a world of hurt here.

49ers 14 Raiders 24

3:01 Brock Purdy hits a couple of throws further down the field, this opens up things for the run game and Christian McCaffrey goes into the endzone from 14 yards out to pull the 49ers to within three.

Purdy with completions of 15 yards to McCaffrey and 18 yards to Jauan Jennings.

3:07 The 49ers defense comes up with its first three and out in a crucial moment of the game. Deommodore Lenoir with solid coverage on Davante Adams on first down. Arik Armstead with another terrific play on second down to drop Jacobs for a loss of one. A third down completion to Adams comes up a yard shy and the 49ers will take over at their 14.

3:15 Brock Purdy with the first turnover of the game. Purdy tried to hit George Kittle deep to the right side, but Amik Robertson went up and took the ball away from the tight end.

The 49ers are 1-9 since the start of 2021 when they turn the ball over more than their opponents.

3:21 On the next play Jarrett Stidham hits Darren Waller for a gain of 24. The Raiders will open the fourth quarter with the ball at the 49ers 46.

49ers 21 Raiders 24

3:25 Kerry Hyder gets up to knock a Stidham pass into the air and rookie Drake Jackson comes down with it. Huge play for the 49ers who take over at the Raiders.

3:29 The 49ers pick up one first down, but Purdy underthrows Jauan Jennings and George Kittle on consecutive plays to stop the offense. Robbie Gould hits from 43 yards out to tie the game at 24.

3:38 San Francisco with its third strong defensive possession in a row. After allowing Las Vegas to get a first down they get off the field when Stidham’s pass to Adams deep down the left sideline falls incomplete.

Time for the offense to put a drive together here.

3:46 Purdy hits Ray-Ray McCloud on a screen for a gain of 42 to open the 49ers possession. They get to the Raiders six where Purdy’s throw to George Kittle is knocked away.

Purdy missed a touchdown opportunity a couple of plays before the Kittle incompletion. He didn’t see Tyler Kroft open over the middle and threw incomplete to Brandon Aiyuk instead.

Robbie Gould hits from 24 yards out to give the 49ers a 27-24 lead.

3:54 Stidham with a pair of long completions to Moreau before the 49ers defense comes up with a hold. Carlson hits from 57 yards out to tie the game at 27.

Big moment for Brock Purdy upcoming.

4:00 WOW! Brock Purdy beats the blitz by getting the ball out to Christian McCaffrey on a screen to the left. McCaffrey goes 38 yards down to the 14. On the next play Jordan Mason takes it around the left side for his first regular season touchdown.

Purdy also had a 23-yard completion to Brandon Aiyuk on the second play of the possession.

49ers 34 Raiders 27

4:11 The Raiders strike back quick. Stidham with a 45-yard throw down the right side to Davante Adams who beat the coverage of Deommodore Lenoir.

Fred Warner is called for pass interference in the endzone on the next play and Josh Jacobs takes it in from there to tie the game at 34.

Just over a minute left for the 49ers offense to win this game.

4:20 Purdy completes four passes to Brandon Aiyuk to set up a 41-yard game winning field goal attempt for Robbie Gould. Gould misses wide right, and we are headed to overtime.

The Raiders won the toss and will get the ball to open the extra session.

4:29 Nick Bosa pushes the Raiders left tackle into Stidham causing the ball to flutter. Tashaun Gipson makes the play and takes it 56 yards down to the Raiders seven.

Robbie Gould doesn’t miss it this time. 49ers win 37-34 and move into the second seed in the NFC. A win next week over Arizona and a Philadelphia loss to New York would give San Francisco the top seed and a bye in the first round.

  1. Maybe in the first half of the season, Hufanga was a probowl player, but certainly not in the 2nd half. For a number of games now he has made a mistake that resulted in a TD.

    1. cubus
When he’s not beating himself, perhaps there is enough tape on Hufanga for other teams to figure out how to beat him. Bottom line, he’s regressed, not progressed and has become a liability!

  2. Well that was like a hot knife through butter. Huf once again burned bad for a TD. Hopefully that is the typical opening drive blues for the Niners defense. Let’s hope Stidham is not going to do a Brock Purdy impression.

  3. The defense is overrated by the national press. The run D is generally excellent, but if the rush doesn’t get home, the secondary is suspect.

  4. If our OL can give Purdy a clean pocket and time like this it will be so hard to stop this offense. The kid is amazing!

  5. The defense has been crapping the bed all game… finally a play!

Seems like they were listening to too many of the fans that were saying this was a blowout. That the Raiders had already quit.

  6. Trent Williams has not been good. Did nothing on that last goal line run before the Kittle TD pass, and now a bone head penalty.

    And now another penalty.

    Trent destroyed that drive.

  7. Bosa has been ineffective from the left side of the defense. I think they should switch him up. Let’s see if Ryans can make some adjustments.

  8. This defense had become very concerning. Starting to get 2019 vibes when the defense faded late in the season. The defense has made only one play in the first half. They haven’t covered anyone, unless it was by holding the receiver. The run defense is terrible. Stidham looks like a HOF’er. Ryans has a massive amount of work to do.

  9. We have not seen a scrambling QB for several weeks..he seems to have his way with our sleepy defense.

  10. 1) Undisciplined pass rush against mobile QB. Our kryponite.
    2) Hufanga free-lancing with dump truck speed.

  11. I sure hope the real Raiders and Niners defense show up soon.

Purdy has been very contained. A long of 9 yards passing is completely embarrassing, hard to win with that. Raiders are seriously fired up.

  12. With this ass kicking of the Niners defense we are now going to see what Brock Purdy is made of. Purdy is absolutely struggling, can’t get anything downfield today. We haven’t seen him play from behind yet. How will he respond?

  13. These refs looks like betting too much in vegas the way they are calling these holding penalties!

  14. Now that’s some football! Excellent drive, nice to see the real Raiders defense too.

Hopefully this will inspire the defense to start playing some football.

  15. Bad pass, took too long to get it out. Then it was inaccurate. That one hurt. That showed his lack of arm strength as it kind of hung up there too long.

  16. I feel Purdy has just been a bit off all game. Passes that are short, off target, or late. That last pass to Auyuk was off, would have been nice to see Aiyuk catch it, but it was not an easy catch. Then the goal line pass to Kittle was just ill advised to begin with.

  17. Well that is just fitting for today. Should have ran another play rather than assume Gould can make a 41 yard FG.

    1. Can’t agree with that. Lombardi just tweeted:

That’s Robbie Gould’s first miss in 6 seasons with the 49ers with the game on the line.

    1. Assuming that we win, might be a good thing. After the KC beating they played really well for a number of games. This defense needs to be brought down to earth at times, and now is a good time for that.

    2. No, they will lose when they play an elite passing offense. Look at how they have been sliced up the last 2 games against very much lesser QB’s.

  18. Well it was a victory. But all of a sudden the offense is the strength of the team and the defense has become a real liability. Hard to imagine they could win a Super Bowl against the elite AFC passing teams.

  19. I am comforting my Purdy. His first bad game, and he is now back to earth. Get Jimmy G ready to back him at least up.

    1. I think he played really well on the penultimate drive save the dead duck he threw up while getting hit. Still, he was avoiding rushes and completing throws with decent accuracy. Maybe Purdy has spoiled you a bit?

    2. This game shows how difficult it is to maintain motivation over a tough long season. The sign of a champion is pulling out the victory.
      Stay positive and strong.
      Go 9ers.

  20. LATEST PLAYOFF SEED UPDATES:
    * Saints 20 Eagles 10
    * Packers 41 Vikings 17
    * 49ers 37 Raiders 34
    * 49 are now second seed after beating LV and will host two playoff games at Levi if they beat Arizona week 18.

  21. HAPPY NEW YEARS everyone!

Let me just say …. while I expected a blowout …. a win is a win at this point of the season! I’ve been watching the NFL for long enough to know that, on ANY GIVEN SUNDAY, any NFL team can win. But when it matters most, it’s the best TEAMS, and the best PLAYERS who show out in CRUNCH TIME!

This was a fantastic win for KYLE and the 49ers! This is what CHAMPIONS do!

  22. Agree..I don’t mean to expect perfection from Purdy. He dis miss a few, as Kyle said in his post-game. But we did win and LV is not a bad team.

  23. Well, Purdy checked another box for me today. He was able to lead the team back after falling behind. He stayed under control throughout the entire game.
He wasn’t as sharp today as he’s been before today, but he did a great job in always keeping the offense moving forward.

I’m starting to feel very comfortable every time Purdy throws a pass. Which is big relief because I would hold my breath when Garoppolo would throw.
Now, Purdy only has one more box to check – winning a playoff game.

    1. I agree, I thought Purdy was kind of off all game. Couldn’t get a pass over 9 yards until well into the 3rd quarter, and missing a number of throws that were there to be made. But at the end of the game needing to engineer a comeback he did his job. This was kind of the last hurdle for an NFL QB to pass.

The defense is now the real concern for the Niners.

  24. A. A-Ron Banks might have an MCL knee injury. Hopefully it’s something he can work his way back from in the playoffs.
