The free-agent signing period has barely started and the 49ers have already lost a player.
Guard Justin Smiley has agreed to terms with the Dolphins on a five-year, $25 million contract than includes a $9 million signing bonus, he said. He is scheduled to fly to Miami early Friday morning to sign the contract and make it official.
"I'm very excited about the opportunity," Smiley said on the phone just moments ago. "Miami called as soon as they were able to call me and told me they'd like to have me down there. They called me right after it (free agency) started. They offered me that (contract). I feel very blessed. It feels good to have security. I want to go down there and give them every penny's worth and play hard for them."
Smiley said he is slated to play right guard for the Dolphins. Smiley resides in Ellabel, Ga., and attended Alabama.
"To me, it seems like a good fit, me being from the South," Smiley said. "There are a lot of other factors you have to weigh when you're considering a situation like this. I talked to them just a little while ago, and this is flattering that they came after me like this."
Smiley was a second-round pick of the 49ers in 2004. He and the 49ers were far apart in contract talks, dating back the past two seasons. He said he has not yet spoken to the 49ers.
"It's a bummer because those guys mean a lot to me," Smiley said. "Being around those other offensive linemen and the organization, it made a positive impact in my life. The fans of San Francisco, they're faithful. I always hoped I could be a 49er, but it didn't work out."
Smiley started all 32 games in 2005 and '06. He played most of the '06 season with a torn left labrum. He sustained a dislocated right shoulder in the eighth game last season and had season-ending surgery Nov. 13. He probably will not take part in any contact until training camp, as a precaution.
Smiley will undoubtedly have to pass a physical with the Dolphins. He said that should be no problem, as his rehabilitation is ahead of schedue.

There appears to be a front-runner in the race to get Bears WR Bernard Berrian, and it's not the 49ers. The Vikings have reportedly sent a jet to California to pick him up.
* * *
Also, the Vikings are reportedly making a quick play for DE Justin Smith. Many believed (myself included) that Smith would be heading to the 49ers.

Comment: some of you guys are total tools. The niners did grab J. Smith and are one of the most aggressive teams in FA. It just started geeks. Give em time in FA before you and Ann Buzzkillion start saying how bad they did. My guess, they score well in FA. Maioco gets one guess out of 20 right and you annoint him a genius? suck it.
Here's to Martz lighting up the score board and Maijoko and his girlfriend hagkillion eating crow once again.
At least we now have a smith that can play football.

Comment: Swinging dorr Smiley is gone...I hope the door hit his butt on the way out. That guy in the first 10 weeks of last year was a joke. When you got an announcer screaming to get the guy off the field..
Bone Head Nolan leaves him in...there goes our QB....there goes another QB...

Comment: too bad we could have used smiley lets hope we can resign m douglas ..when i see lists of available players his name is almost never on them. lets hope he's our best secret and get him back b 4 some savy team (tampa bay ?) scoops him up !!!

Comment: As for getting a proven 1000 yd receiver. The Niners already have one. Darrell Jackson is a 3-time 1000 yd receiver. Just goes to show you that the QB problem affects everything. Solve the QB problem and you solve the WR problem.

Comment: It is no secret I am not on the Rollin with McNolan Bandwagon. I hate to lose Smiley. The idea that Parcells wanted him at that price should make us have second thoughts about our Brain Trust Competency. He should have been locked up after McNolan saw Hutchinson deal with the Vikings. They miscalulated the value of guards.

Comment: I think we'd all agree that OG was not a place Scot planned to spend $$. He will more likely spend another Draft pick in a very deep class this year. Let the takers take from us now, and know what holes need to be filled. Did Kwame even get a sniff this year? He's been a FA since camp started and Joe took his job, so no need to panic. All this means is we lighten the cap overhead and clearly define those back fill positions. I'd bank on Draft picks over FAs for those spots anyway. Smiley and Harris were expected to depart I'm sure.

Comment: No tampering there, phone rang and away he went. Good, more $$ in the bank now.

Comment: I cannot believe that we are going after Alan Faneca. I like Faneca, but I didn't think that we paid a lot of money for gaurds? Isn't that the reason we wouldn't pay Smiley? Whats up with that?

Comment: Do any of you know what's been scheduled or what offers have been extended? No? I didn't think so. To be saying that the 9ers are slow to react, letting the market be set, etc. is idiotic. Free agency has been ongoing for 1.5 hours, just calm the xxxx down people.

Comment: Montana, I don't want any WR that has been known for 1000 years. JK I know its getting late even on the west side of the county.
Posted By: Montana1 (28/02/2008 10:38:28 PM)
Comment: This is pretty ugly. IMHO if we don't grab a known 1000 year receiver like Berrian we're totally screwed. ***When was the last time we drafted a wide.......Hmmmmm.....Bill Walsh.........T.O......???? It's been a while.
Posted By: Lee (28/02/2008 10:35:58 PM)
Comment: Any word on Calvin Pace???
Posted By: Global Nomad (28/02/2008 10:35:56 PM)
Comment: Hey matt can you confirm the http://profootballtalk.com/ report that Kwame Harris has reached an agreement with the Raiders? I never thought I would see the day when the Raiders would act faster than the Niners bringing guys in.
Posted By: Montana1 (28/02/2008 10:31:15 PM)
Comment: Smiley sucked last year and they played better without him.
Posted By: oneniner (28/02/2008 10:29:45 PM)
Comment: lol..nice try.....if yu are gonna fake oneniner you should know his number one QB is A. Smith...lol....yu guys are funny
Posted By: PEDRO (28/02/2008 10:25:19 PM)
Comment: It is only 1 hour and 25 minutes into free agency. Lets not hit the panic button. We'll be ok. They warned us they wouldn't be as crazy like last year.
Posted By: oneniner (28/02/2008 10:24:19 PM)
Comment: Derek Anderson? Wow, where does he go now? Can't come to the Niners, right? Too bad.`
Posted By: oneniner (28/02/2008 10:24:03 PM)
Comment: five-year, $25 million contract than includes a $9 million signing bonus,....that is not too expensive for a guard, am suprised we couldn't sign him....no niner signing?
Posted By: Lee (28/02/2008 10:22:54 PM)
Comment: That is disapointing that no one is scheduled to come to the niners yet. What are we waiting for????
Posted By: Steve (28/02/2008 10:16:24 PM)
Comment: Wow. Berrian, and now Smith possibly going to the Vikings, and no one coming to the Niners. Great job Scot McCloughan. Your doing one bang up job as a GM. At least when Nolan was incharge of personnel we did not wait for the market to set itself.
Posted By: Fred Douglas (28/02/2008 10:13:34 PM)
Comment: Yikes. Did McCloughan fail to pull the trigger, or Nolan?
It looks like Bill Parcells thought Smiley was a lock to help his offensive line. Good luck, Justin, and thanks for your hard work in SF. Thanks also for being enough of a standup guy to state publicly that Alex Smith is a tough kid who was treated unfairly by his immature head coach.
Posted By: Randy in Santa Rosa (28/02/2008 10:13:08 PM)
Comment: I liked Smiley's fire, but his time was up. Baas is the man. Thanks Justin and good luck.
Posted By: 9erfan (28/02/2008 10:07:56 PM)
Comment: Smiley made too many mistakes anyway.
Posted By: Dr. Dork (28/02/2008 10:01:56 PM)
Comment: Well, I spent my wad last season. It didn't get us to the Super Bowl, so guess what?? No more decent players this year. I think we shall stick with the same crappy players we had last seson, and let our decent players run off to other teams. I don't care...thanks NFL revenue sharing.
Posted By: Paul (28/02/2008 9:59:22 PM)
Comment: Smith to Viking possibly too. Not a great start at all.
Posted By: Rigs49 (28/02/2008 9:57:55 PM)
Comment: Good luck to Justin and I would like to thank him for all of his work that he gave to this organization.
Posted By: Jim in Walnut Creek (28/02/2008 9:57:41 PM)
Comment: Good for Smiley. Dude played well and played through injuries here. No surpise that Parcels recognized the value. Learning lesson for Niner front office about extending core players early (note Robinson today). Niners now clearly need a versatile veteran OL to add depth with Wragge. Any chance that the club will now pursue Womack, who can back-up at 4 OL positions?
Posted By: Kings/9ersfan (28/02/2008 9:56:23 PM)
Comment: Can we atleast get Stallworth if we can't get Berrian?
Posted By: Rich, DE (28/02/2008 9:53:23 PM)
Comment: From: profootballtalk.com, "The story announcing the move was posted 27 minutes into free agency by Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat. And given that the article has three paragraphs of quotes from Smiley, and assuming that the conversation between Maiocco and Smiley lasted at least five minutes, there's no way in hell that the Dolphins first initiated contact with Smiley at 12:01 a.m. EST."

Comment: Tampering charges anyone?
Posted By: Anthony (28/02/2008 9:42:41 PM)
Comment: Matt,
You are definately the best when it comes to news on the Niners. I used to go to college in California and now go to law school in Chicago. Being so far from the SF Bay Area, you are the FIRST place I come to for news regarding the Niners!!!!
Congratulations on Employee of the Year!!!
