Receiver Arnaz Battle said today he missed 49ers organized team activities this week "for personal reasons." He plans to attend the voluntary workouts next week, he indicated.
Battle's unexplained absence raised some eyebrows this week at the team's OTAs in Santa Clara. Coach Mike Nolan said Monday he expected Battle to attend the workouts and did not know his whereabouts. Battle remained in Dallas, where he makes his offseason home.
In an email exchange this morning, Battle wrote that he "will be back for next week . . . also have informed coaches." The 49ers are off today, but are scheduled to work out Thursday and Friday. The team will continue its routine of practices on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through June 20.
Battle, the 49ers most reliable wide receiver the past two seasons, is fighting for playing time. He is the No. 2 flanker behind veteran Isaac Bruce, but could see considerable action this season as the No. 3 wideout in Mike Martz's offense.
Last season, the Lions had three wide receivers catch more than 60 passes under Martz's direction. Battle led the 49ers' wide receivers with 50 catches for 600 yards and five touchdowns.

Comment: Truthfully, I would listen to trade offers for anybody on this team not named Gore or Willis.
That being said, I hope Arnaz makes it back and gets into the groove as soon as possible.

Comment: Truthfully, I'd listen to trade offers for Arnaz. With young draftees and FA additions to the group he may be at peak levels for trade interest now. Not sure Lito Sheppard would be on par for a head up deal, but Philly could use Arnaz and I wouldn't mind a Draft pick in the Rd 3-4 range.

Comment: Oneniner- what are you trying to say? Last year battle had 50rec/600yards(led wr team) and 06 he had 59 rec(led wr team) and 686 yrds(2nd on team) and all this as a #2 in the system. Were you trying to imply that using the term "reliable" was down playing his impact or were you trying to say that it was overplaying it and its a misnomer? Please enlighten. Battles been both the most reliable and the best all around wr on the team for the last 3 years, all things considered.

Comment: Could have been illness or family conflict. Could have been extra time to get illegal substances out of his system. Could have been contract issues but that would have been really dumb. We won't know unless somebody tells us. Let's hope it was innocent and he has a great year.

Comment: I hope he comes back and resumes his activities in the starting WR corps.
I like saying "Razzle-Dazzle-Arnaz-Battle!!!", when he makes big play.

Comment: As for the last comment, how can a player be "reliable" if he misses six games. Slow news day? We find out the team is going after Barry Sims AND Arnaz Battle says he's going to be at camp next week. It might be a slow news day on other sites, but not on this one. Thank you Matt.

Comment: Hey Matt ..i am not sure why you keep pointing out he was most reliable WR the past 2 season......he was reliable in 2005...comparing his numbers with Lloyd ( who was always inconsistent), if he had not missed 6 games their stats would have been pretty much been the same....Battle-2005 SF G10 Rec32 YRDS363 AVG11.3 TD3 ....Lloyd-2005 SF G16 Rec48 YRDS733 AVG15.3 TD5......in 2004 his second season though he played 14 games he only had 8rec 143YRDS AVG17.9 but he led or was reliable in punt returns...2004 SF PR31 YRDS266 AVG8.6 TD1 KR13 YRDS257 AVG19.8 .......i know this is much to do about nothing......this comment is a result of a slow day with no much niner news....

Comment: Glad he's coming back. Matt, did you ever sense he was frustrated? Another blog (nineragua.blogspot.com) reported the 9ers receivers have more yards for other teams than any receiver group in the league. Do you think he's tired the team adding veterans?

Comment: I was hoping that Battle was holding out and we were gonna trade him... I would like to see Lelie or Jason Hill out there at #3 instead of Battle...
