The 49ers remain in the running to sign veteran offensive tackle Barry Sims, who visited four teams last week. The Raiders released Sims in a salary-cap move earlier this offseason. The 49ers are in need of a veteran who can play tackle.
Joe Staley and Jonas Jennings are slated to start at left and right tackle, respectively. But the 49ers have little - or no - proven depth behind the presumptive starters. The 49ers moved rookie Chilo Rachal to right tackle at the beginning of the organized team activities (OTAs). But Rachal would probably move back to guard if they acquired Sims.
Ken Vierra, Sims' agent, spoke with the 49ers and the Patriots on Monday. When asked if the 49ers remain in the mix, Vierra answered, "Absolutely." When asked if the Patriots still have a chance to sign Sims, Vierra replied, "Absolutely." Vierra said he plans to speak with the Ravens and Rams either later today or tomorrow.
"They all have something to offer," Vierra said.
There are a number of factors Sims will weigh before he makes a decision. Vierra said Sims will not necessarily sign with the highest bidder. Among the factors that Sims will considere, as outlined by Vierra, are: 1) Chance to earn a starting job; 2) chance to make the postseason; 3) overall organization; 4) offensive line coach; 5) offensive coordinator; and, of course, 6) money.

Undrafted receiver Cam Colvin was the last of the 49ers rookies to report to work for OTAs. Because Oregon is on the quarter system, their school wrapped up late. Under league rules, a rookie is not allowed to join an NFL team full time until his school has concluded classes (or he has graduated).
The 49ers have three practices remaining during organized team activities. Tuesday's practice will be the last one open to the media. Practices conclude Wednesday and Thursday.

Comment: Hopefully Sims will make the right decision and join the 49ers. If he lives in the Bay Area he should know there is no place better to live, even though there a teams willing to pay more for a year or 2. But quality of life will be taken from him going somewhere else. The AFC has to many contenders if you want a ring, and dont go to the Rams and breathe that crappy air in that dome.

Comment: Overrated Kobe?!?!? Now that is just an assinine statement. You must know nothing about hoops. Let's see how "overrated" Kobe is when BYNUM comes back in the fall to play a true Center, Gasol will move to a true PF spot, and Odom can be a nasty mismatch against whatever SF he's playing. That will be an indefensible lineup much of the time. How quickly people forget that a MAJOR physical player in the Laker formula has been missing since January!! They got this far without him!! Also keep in mind, Kobe TORE LIGAMENTS earlier in the season and opted to have them fixed AFTER the season....so he's been playing with torn ligaments this whole time which has an effect on his ball hangling. If Kobe is overrated, then I'd hate to see what the rest of the league is!! What an idiotic statement. You better stick to football, Ace.

Comment: Hey Oneniner r u a Boston bandwagoner or a Kobe hater like most?..overrated I don't think so. Congrats to Boston but rest assured Lakers will win at least 2 championships in the next 5 yrs...mark my word...Laker fan 4 LIFE!!!!....Go 49ers!!!!

Comment: Hey oneniner-Forget Vegas chicks. There are about 1500 employees in my office building and HOT is the word of the day. My lunch break is better than a Joe Montana to Jerry Rice touchdown. But in this day and age of politically correct it's better to just keep my shades on and watch. And watch I do!!!! It is kind of fun though when the real HOT ones walk by and ask how Cleveland Mike is doing??? Babe ....20 years ago you would have fallen like a twig in a windstorm. Those were the days. Thank god for the memories.

Comment: Matt...If Bill Belicheat is interested in him then who am I to question? Maybe Bill saw something in the walk through tapes that oneniner and I missed. Anthony Clement??? No mas...no mas. Let's get Sims and see what is out there at the end of training camp. Maybe Duckett can help. Maybe!!! is the operative word.

Comment: Cleveland Mike--If the pats are interested in him he can't be all that bad can he? It could be worse, the niners could go after Anthony Clement again!

Comment: Hey oneniner........you're right and I let my emotions get the better of me. I just have bad dreams fo Staley going down and Jennings is just to injury prone. Still I do believe Sims has been in the league for over 10 years so he's doing something right. However oneniner I think you're right on this one. Bring Back Keith Farnhorst or maybe even Bob St. Clair. We need some OT depth. HELP! Oneniner any chance you can suit up???

Comment: Everyone WANTS to be a starter (or at least get paid starters money). Whether or not they WILL depends on lots of stuff. We'll see though.

Comment: what are you smoking Mike...sims is a gamer?....in which game - flag football....the guy is the competing with K.harris has the king of false starts......he his at best an average back-up with experience...............Word out of Falcons OTAs is that Harvey Dahl, who has spent most of his career on practice squads, is lining up at right guard with the first-team offense.....
Posted By: Cleveland Mike (17/06/2008 7:26:55 AM)
Comment: Sign Sims asap. The guy is a gamer and Jennings will break like glass by game 6. We need depth on the O line at tackle. Imagine what we would look like if Staley goes down???? Please sign Sims to a 2 year deal. Matt, on another subject who has been the nice surprise of the OTA's? Morgan???

Comment: Cal--you know what they say, "if aint broke dont fix it". I think the nfl would be stupid to try and meddle with their product as it stands now. Leave peopel wanting more. I do think they should try to bring back a Sprin football organization thats related to the NFL though. NFL Europe was a nice hold over until late July. Maybe try it in the US in smaller markets, i.e. Sacramento, Santa Fe, Salt Lake City, Portland, Columbus, Little Rock, etc.

Comment: I can't get enough NFL. So how about this: Instead of adding more games to the season, double the length of the season...have the AFC teams play one weekend and NFC the next. A 32 week regular season!! We can watch most of the games on TV, regardless of where we live and whether or not we have a sattelite. The players will have two weeks to heal up and prepare for their next game. When it comes to the postseason, the distance between games shortens to the standard week. That way, the season runs from fall through spring! The schedulers can make sure air conditioned domes are home for the hot weeks. Who's in??

Comment: Matt, I hate to dwell on the ones that got away (like Giants closers)...but what do you think about Marcus Maxwell? He was tearing up Europa before we cut him and caught on with a then-deep (and now thinning) wide receiver corps in Cincy.
Is McNolan just blind and dumb when it comes to receivers, and should we therefore thank our lucky stars that Martz is here to help them out this year?
Response: Marcus Maxwell had one catch for 5 yards for the Bengals last season. I wish him well, and would like to see him have a nice career. I think it would've been good to see Maxwell get a better chance last summer. But let's wait to see if he enjoys any success with the Bengals before comparing him to Joe Nathan. --Matt M.

Comment: "Some would say the coach of the softball team gave me the greatest gift I received at my wedding, but that's a very long story." Aww, come on Matt! You can't just leave us hanging like that! With the practices closed after Tuesday, maybe you could use a little 'filler'.

Comment: I need a fantasy football team name. Every year I use a 49er play call. I know darn well you guys know your history. Please give a fello 49er faithful some help here. You too Mr.Maiocco!
Response: Probably the most famous play in 49ers history is "Sprint Right Option." (Dwight Clark made "The Catch" off that play, and Freddie Solomon had a TD catch on that same play earlier in that NFC title game against the Cowboys.) It later was Sprint Left Option with Steve Young. Of course, going back a long time, "Alley Oop" was a well-known play. --Matt M.

Comment: You can never have too many offensive linemen, and Sims will probably come at a pretty decent price. I say sign him up.
BTW, Matt did you see that HSU won the D-2 national title in softball? Takes the sting out of the basketball postseason, somewhat...
Response: On May 17, when it happened, I included a note in this here blog about the softball team. (BTW, I go way back with that program. Some would say the coach of the softball team gave me the greatest gift I received at my wedding, but that's a very long story.) --Matt M.

Comment: 1. Starting Job? Yes, Jonas getting injured by week 6-8 is almost inevitable. 2. Chance to make the post season? 50/50 3. Overall organization? definately 4. Offensive line coach? I hear alot of good things about George Warhop and I think alot of people like him (just not nolan) 5. Offensive coordinator? Definately one of the best offensive minds 6. Money? We won't break the bank but we'll probably offer a fair price.
Posted By: oneniner (16/06/2008 3:50:21 PM)
Comment: 1) Chance to earn a starting job = NO 2) chance to make the postseason = MAYBE 3) overall organization = YES 4) offensive line coach = MAYBE 5) offensive coordinator = YES and, of course, 6) money = NO (but he could save for not relocating to another area)........this guy is a false start away from retiring....

Comment: Matt, keep an eye out for Colvin tomorrow if ya could. I feel bad for the guy missing so much of OTAs due to some dumb school rules. Hopefully he can get some reps.

Comment: Which criteria do we meet? #1- definitely by week 5. #2- not so much. #3-hopefully history counts (I still think the 9ers have a strong organization though). #4-Heck, we got 2. #5-Check. #6-He's not a guard, so we may pay him. Never trust an agent though. Until he signs on the dotted, his agent is going to say "absolutely".
