Splitting the 49ers practice repetitions

There was a lot going on this morning on the practice field in Napa. To keep tabs on what was happening, several sets of eyes were needed during the 90-minute practice.

The staff here at Instant 49ers remained on the side of the field that featured the 49ers' offense against the Raiders defense. On the other field, the 49ers' defense and Raiders' offense were competing.

Each of the three 49ers quarterbacks saw action with the No. 1 offense in 11-on-11 drills. During those sessions, J.T. O'Sullivan completed 3 of 6, Shaun Hill completed 4 of 5 and Alex Smith completed 2 of 3.

Overall in 11-on-11 drills, Smith was 8 of 12, O'Sullivan was 5 of 8 and Hill was 4 of 5.

Smith threw the ball pretty well in the intermediate routes, and he showed a little better touch on the short throws.

* * *

There was one notable scuffle and that came early in practice. Coaches from both sides were heard repeatedly telling the players to "Stay up." There was no live tackling. The coaches, obviously, wanted to avoid injuries so a wrap-and-release philosophy was employed.

But Raiders linebacker Edgerton Hartwell didn't get the memo. He leveled 49ers fullback Moran Norris with a shoulder tackle on a 7-on-7 passing drill. Norris got to his feet and immediately went after Hartwell. There were a few punches thrown as players from both sides joined the fun.

Mike Nolan, who coached Hartwell with the Ravens, tried to calm him down. Hartwell was pleading his case to Nolan. He told Nolan that Norris came at him.

* * *

On the very first route he ran in a one-on-one session against Raiders corner Stanford Routt, 49ers WR Bryant Johnson pulled up lame with a right hamstring injury. He did not return. Routt tried for several minutes to get Johnson's attention to make sure he was all right. It's doubtful Johnson will practice this evening. His availability is day-to-day.

Ashley Lelie got a lot of action and caught several balls. But as he was limping with his left calf wrapped in ice as he made his way to a team bus. Lelie said his calf was feeling "fatigued." He status for tonight's practice is also in question.

* * *

With Johnson out and Isaac Bruce sitting it out (veteran courtesy), undrafted rookie Cam Colvin got a lot of action and looked good. Even Mike Martz afterward said he is impressed with what he's seen from a guy that he did not expect to be much of a factor.

Colvin said he's completely healthy after undergoing right ankle surgery that ended his career at Oregon. Colvin underwent surgery in December. He said he is continuing to learn the offense, and that he's getting more comfortable by the day.

Colvin caught three passes in 11-on-11, but he was disappointed he didn't hold onto a pass from Alex Smith, in which Raiders corner Darrick Brown made a nice play to knock the ball out of his hands.

* * *

Frank Gore saw some action in 7-on-7, but it was DeShaun Foster and, mostly, Thomas Clayton who handled the action in run portion of 11-on-11 drills.

* * *

Meanwhile on the other field, caught a glimpse of Roderick Green intercepting a pass from Andrew Walter in 7-on-7.

* * *

In other 7-on-7 stuff, Vernon Davis was running free down the field but Smith's threw was just above his knees. Davis could not make the catch. Davis said linebackers tried to cover him and had no chance. Then, Raiders safety Gibril Wilson covered him. Again, Davis said Wilson had no chance. Confidence is not one of Davis' problems. . . . DeAngelo Hall picked off a Smith pass for Josh Morgan, while Rashad Baker intercepted an O'Sullivan pass for Arnaz Battle.

* * *

Tried to watch some of the one-on-one pass rush drills. It looked like the 49ers guys did a pretty good job in the drills I saw. Barry Sims did well against Josh Shaw, and Chilo Rachal worked well against six-year veteran William Joseph. It was intriguing to see Cody Wallace (6-4, 300) not back down against a much larger Terdell Sands (6-7, 335). Adam Snyder knocked down rookie Derrick Gray. Looked like Greg Spires got around Barry Sims, though.

* * *

The 49ers' No. 2 offensive line was LT Damane Duckett, LG Brian de la Puente, C Cody Wallace, RG Chilo Rachal, RT Barry Sims. Joe Toledo replaced Duckett a little later. Duckett is just returning from a knee sprain.

Comment: Dilfer took a job with the NFL Network, I believe, on the basis of those football smarts and personality. Beyond the noodle arm, mobility also became an issue for him in his later years. Especially when combined with our pass protection performance last season.

Comment: How could I forgot the Chiefs? My point with all those teams is that they all have atleast one guy that is flop, maybe a rookie, a guy not living up to his potential, and a mystery man. Just like the Niners. I would love to see a new, competent signal-caller, but just a slick and sexy draft pick does not answer that riddle. Does anyone know if Dilfer stuck after his retirement around to coach or be an assistant? The man has some football smarts, just a noodle arm.

Comment: Sorry all. Got carried away. I agree with tg12. Except I think the Texans are better off at QB if Schaub can stay healthy (Rosenfels isn't bad either). Andre Johnson is a real #1, something we haven't had since T.O. left. Our depth is better though. I'd sub in the Jets for the Texans on your list. Bill Walsh's guy Trent Edwards shows some promise on the Bills, too. Leinart has as much to prove on the Cards as Alex Smith. Also add the Chiefs to that list. Croyle blows.

Comment: Thank god there's new posts and everyone doesn't have to read these stupid arguments that won't get settled until the season starts. Dummy- Cal's right. Don't use all caps. Your chatter is no more valuable than the rest of ours. You both seem to know as much about football as the other. And it's your all caps and trashtaking that makes you immature, not Cal's calling you out on it. Cal- for petesake ignore him and don't get into a pissing match because I don't want to read it.

Comment: Ryan's right. Dummy Police & Cal = this kind of invective is what made Matt wary about blogging in the first place. Quit the hysterics and the trash talking. Be more constructive in your posts. We're all niner fans here. I like to go into a season optimistically. That's what a 0-0 record gives us. If you want to enter the season with no hope...calling for the head of the coach, the GM and the QB before the first game...well, that's not what I do but I'm a glass half full kinda guy.

Posted By: Ryan (05/08/2008 9:10:07 AM)
Comment: Man, will both of you shut up? You both have valid opinions, but the name calling and trash talking is uncalled for. Dummy Police = Yes, Nolan screwed up the QB situation last year and threw Smith into the fire too early in his first year. Cal = Yes, Nolan doesn't have the final say anymore and I'm sure Martz thinks he's a genius and can turn anyone into the next Kurt Warner. And yes, Nolan's 49ers are much better than Dwight Clark's or Terry Donahue's. He shouldn't have dumped J. Peterson though. See, both of you have valid points. Let's not rally the lynch mob after Nolan or Smith just yet. Give them this year to prove their worth. There aren't anymore crap coordinators to blame and they're out of injury timeouts. And Dummy Police - be more civil. If I wanted to read this back and forth accusation crap I'd be reading a politics blog. And yes, posting in all caps is widely known as being as annoying as that guy at the bottom who types "first."

Posted By: Cal (05/08/2008 8:48:56 AM)
Comment: Dude, you can think what you want. I'm sure you're a real mature, football genius who is smarter than the professionals running the 49ers. God, why don't we ever call you and ask your opinion prior to the drafts?? We're so screwed without your help. If you want to believe that Mike Nolan is still the GM when he's not...you are free to do that. I'm sure Scott asks his coaches for input (including both Martz and Nolan). That said, he's got the title and the final call. Do you think Lelie would still be here if Nolan was in charge? DO you really think the 49ers were better, personnel-wise, before Nolan came along?? You're certainly free to spout your ignorant opinions on sports, politics, fellow bloggers and 49er fans. I'd suggest you do it elsewhere or keep it above board and more productive and rational, because your trashtalking all-caps immaturity isn't lending much to the best niner blog on the net. I'm sorry I stereotyped you as a Raider fan. You write like one. Actually, I'm a Democrat myself. Never voted for Bush. The last video game system I had was a Sega Genesis. And I haven't had zits for a decade now. So go ahead and make crazy generalizations. But please, Mr. Policeman...whatever you do...be sure to get ahold of the Yorks and impart all your wisdom. We need you!

Comment: teams with comparable to worse qb situations: Vikings, Bears, Bills, Falcons, Dolphins, Raiders, Ravens, and the Texans. All questionable. A couple have stud rookies and two-year guys, but nothing promising. After this year, there is doesn't seem to be too many quarterbacks coming out of college, but the safest and lowest risk is to sign a verteran that can handle the complexity of the Martz offense. I would be much happier with that than giving an unproven rookie 10+ million a year.

Posted By: Dummy Police (05/08/2008 7:08:43 AM)
Comment: CAPS shouting?1.You just proved my point spare me with ur adolescent terms and stop dumming up the blog 2.Nolan stripped of personel duties?proves again your'e an idiot, Nolan was no less involved this year than in the year before remember McCloughan didnt want Martz Nolan did remember that fiasco so now your telling me that McCloughan is making decisions independent of the guy that hired him and believe me u know NOTHING about football and u can be told anything and believe it. You are exactly the type of people who reelected an idiot to office after he proved to be an idiot the 4 years before

Posted By: Cal (05/08/2008 6:43:12 AM)
Comment: As for the CAPs button comment, "shouting" in all caps is annoying and bad manners for the blog. As for me, I'm 30 years old and have forgotten more about football than you'll ever learn.

Posted By: Cal (05/08/2008 6:37:58 AM)
Comment: Uhh...I'm not the one who doesn't know football or grammar (yeah, talking you Police and Shobb). Nolan was stripped of personnel duties. What's deficient with that argument? Police blamed Nolan for not drafting a QB. It was pretty obvious with his response to the Chilo pick ("Scott says he's the next Larry Allen...we'll see, I guess") that he wasn't in charge anymore. When was he supposed to draft another QB? Before 2007 when Smith was still on the way up and everyone was predicting playoffs? As for guessing whether Martz would pick any of these guys...he picked Warner up from isle 13 at the Hy-Vee and ran with Jon Kitna the last two years. And Sullivan was his boy. He's confided in friends that Smith is the most talented QB he's ever worked with. Quit writing off Smith and Nolan (who, with McCloughan, has done more to successfully rebuild this team than anyone since Walsh) until this season is over. They're both going through growing pains, but last year was mostly Norv Turner and Dean Spanos' fault.

Posted By: Dummy Police (04/08/2008 11:34:18 PM)
Comment: Lol Frank its all in fun.But Martz pretty much is working with what he was given,do u honestly think he would choose ANY of these guys

Posted By: Frank (04/08/2008 11:24:02 PM)
Comment: Wow, there's a lot of smack talkin' goin' on...which is kind of strange, seeing as we've yet to play even one preseason game. Relax everyone...none of us are in Martz' league of evaluating QB's. The man knows what he's doing...just chill out and have a little patience. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither will this new offense.

Comment: Hey Police,im surprized your qare just now realizing that there are a lot of young dumbasses on who dont know crap about football. i think they get starstruck and lose their minds.Cal isnt the only one,he was just stupid enough to respond with a weak argument.i just cant wait for M.Martz or M.Holmgren to fix this mess. We need someone who has vision and can take us out of this misery.Also the developement of these late round receivers is very promising

Posted By: Dummy Police (04/08/2008 11:09:22 PM)
Comment: tg12..there is a need for the niners to get another qb,as a matter of fact they need 3 new qbs ,BUT we are stuck with what we have now and have to tough it out, u cant name a worse trio in the league. i challenge u to name 2 teams with a worse qb situation.i just think its time we be honest with ourselves about the situation.

Posted By: Dummy Police (04/08/2008 11:04:48 PM)
Comment: Ahh..Mr Cal ..one true hint that your a immature kids is your CAPS comment,which in turn tells me u know crap about football and u repeat anything that the resident blog dummies repeat. So since i ur a know certified bonafide Dummy,do us common since fans a favor. When Nolan and Alex Smith hit the road. Be sure to a pack up your X-Box and your best zit fix meds and follow them out of town and take the rest of these idiots wit chaaaaaaa!!!!

Posted By: tg12 (04/08/2008 10:34:32 PM)
Comment: NO need for the niners to get another qb, atleast as of yet. Even if none of the three current qbs do not pan out, are we willing to sit around and wait for a (then) 2nd year guy to develop. Let's work on the guys we have and turn this team around. If anything, they blew it by not taking a receiver in the second round. Taking an O lineman in the second round is not bad, but just not as urgent as a competent WR. I pray the Morgan works out, as he will as long as his attitude stays in check. No more breakout receivers that become thorns in the side down the road (see: TO)

Posted By: Cal (04/08/2008 8:26:06 PM)
Comment: Sorry for the three in a row. I like Colvin. Always have...was one of the guys asking about him a few weeks ago. I think he'll make the team as a kick returner and will turn into one of those productive Martz fourth receivers like Furrey, and get even better than that as time goes on. Here's a good story about him: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft08/columns/story?id=3354379

Posted By: Cal (04/08/2008 8:21:58 PM)
Comment: Alex Smith is probably a little better than a rookie and, with all of his guaranteed money paid out, cheaper. We'll see if he progresses this season. If not, rest assured there will be changes. But lets not get ahead of ourselves. We haven't even seen a preseason game.

Posted By: Cal (04/08/2008 8:18:57 PM)
Comment: I'VE GOT NEWS FOR U, MR. POLICEMAN. NOLAN DOESN'T DRAFT FOR THE 49ERS. HE'S JUST THE COACH. I ASSUME YOU'RE A RAIDERS FAN AND YOU JUST STARTED PAYING ATTENTION BECAUSE OF THE INTRAMURAL PRACTICE TODAY. Congrats. Now quit talking about things you don't know and go back to the Raiders blog. And take your caps lock off. Classic.

Comment: Joey C......Some people have no vision and theres no way we should have passed on all the QB's in this draft,its all spilled milk now, a rookie QB wouldnt have been to much behind these guys and would have had so much more upside and would have created some QUALITY depth not depth in numbers which a lot of people on this blog cant understand.Imagine what M.Martz could have doen with a Chad Henne or another talented rookie.

Posted By: Joey C from LP (04/08/2008 7:54:50 PM)

Comment: ninermaniac - here, try these perscription sunglasses. Drew - I couldn't agree more. The problem is a) we really don't know what evidence there is in the Minnesota/Favre case. If there had not been tangible emails leaked out in the 49er case they probably would not have been punished either and b) No one in the 49ers front office has the balls to demand equal impartial treatment from Goodell on this. And that is sad.

Comment: I hate Godell, the double standard is so very apparent. If you are a good franchise/player, there is no punishment. He took Farve's side on the Packer thing too. On the whole #80 thing, I don't think we should be angry at Bruce, it is his # from the lambs for some time now. The equipment guy should not issue it, if it is unofficially retired. But the 9ers should retire #80, I don't know why it has taken them so long.

Comment: you guys are booooooriiing!!!

Posted By: drew (04/08/2008 3:00:44 PM)
Comment: ska, I understand your point and I agree. However, spinning the events is not uncommon for the participants. The Commissioner's Office is supposed to be the impartial judge of these charges not someone who applies different evidentiary standards depending upon who the participants are. My guess is that in this instance his favoritism of Favre, evidenced by his attempt to broker a deal and then to force the Packers' hand is what caused him to apply a much looser standard to the patently stronger evidence against the Vikings. To hold otherwise, would have meant that he would have had to do something to Farve since he was the instigator of the tampering events.

Posted By: ska (04/08/2008 2:40:03 PM)
Comment: Houston 9er - That is what was indicated. There were some internal emails that SOMEONE leaked out and that is what the 49ers were punished for. The 49ers however never copped to that. They gave the ridiculous explanation I just detailed. It still makes me angry.

Posted By: ska (04/08/2008 2:34:38 PM)
Comment: Drew - yes I have a problem with it. The 49ers never would have been punished if Eddie D was their owner. He wouldn't have stood for the favortism. That being said what I had an even bigger problem with was the spin the 49ers put on the whole thing. Their public statement was that they were being punished for two phone messages they had left for Briggs' agent and that the intent of those unanswered calls was to talk about resigning Taylor Jacobs. That was it. That was what they were being punished for. So that is what the 49ers think of the intelligence of their fans. We should just read that and say damn, the 49ers got screwed and there is nothing they can do about it. It was insulting to say the very least.

Posted By: Houston 9er (04/08/2008 2:31:13 PM)
Comment: drew, where does it say the 9ers were punished partly due to internal emails that suggest an intent to tamper? If so, HOW FREAKING STUPID CAN THE 9ers BE? your going to put in writing that you intend to tamper, and then you turn over those emails to the league???? wow. thats dumb. Goodell may have punished them for stupidity instead of actual tampering. he should have taken away a 7th rounder just for Yorks haircut and that stupid look on his face. Maybe even a 2nd rounder for his pompous attitude.

Posted By: Parker (04/08/2008 2:14:23 PM)
Comment: Hey Jeff - easy on the fourth-grade level name calling. Joe is voicing his opinion here just like everyone else on this blog, but with a refreshing element of sarcasm. Did you not catch that?

Posted By: drew (04/08/2008 2:12:00 PM)
Comment: Sorry, my post got cut off. Here is the quote:"None of those conversations suggest that Favre was soliciting a job or that other teams were soliciting his services." The 49ers were punished for records of uncompleted calls and internal e-mails that suggest an intention to tamper that was unfulfilled. Yet the Vikings coaches can take calls and speak with Farve so long as their is no express solicitation. This is a blatant double standard. This Commissioner is playing favorites.

Posted By: drew (04/08/2008 2:08:52 PM)
Comment: Is anybody else having difficulty with the objectivity of Commissioner Goodell? This is the quote from the NFL release:

Posted By: Jeff in L.A. (04/08/2008 2:02:23 PM)
Comment: Joe Bag of Douche, allow me quote Allen Iverson: "I mean listen, we're sitting here talking about practice, not a game, not a game, not a game, but we're talking about practice. Not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game last it's my last but we're talking about practice man. How silly is that?" Does is really matter what number Bruce wears right now? Its a number, on a jersey, in training camp, there are far greater tragedies in the world to worry about.

Posted By: Houston 9er (04/08/2008 2:01:09 PM)
Comment: Matt, will the 9ers management question the apparent inequality in punishment for the Vikes compared to the 9ers switching 3rd round picks and losing a 5th rounder? Or will they just leave it alone and never mention it again? From a league perspective it sure seems the teams with strong owners get preferential treatment from the comish. The Pats receiving a slap on the wrist for spygate and no punishment whatsoever for allowing players on IR to practice with the team sure seems soft to me. Is the 9er punishment for 2 30 second phone calls to an agent compared to numerous calls and direct contact with a player signed to another team and no punishment a slap in the face to York?

Posted By: AF (04/08/2008 1:56:04 PM)

Comment: Like the Pats did'nt over pay for Adilias Thomas. Please, everybody always over pays in this league.

Comment: Peter King also tried to site superficial defensive statistics to support his claim that the 49ers grossly overpaid for Nate Clements, ignoring the fact that the defense was on the field far more than they had been the year prior and the team lacked a pass rush. He's got too much to cover to pay much attention to a team like the 49ers, so I think he generally talks out of his as$ on these matters...

Comment: Peter King is an idot. He's a Tom Brady jock stap sniffer. What does he know about anything outside the Patriots.

Comment: Matt, how about giving us some training camp stat totals for the 3 QBs? And maybe the 3 strengths and 3 weaknesses of each? Right now its kinda difficult to see anything besides the completion stats which can be misleading. Lets hope the B Johnson hamstring is nothing serious, an injury like that could carry over to the rest of the season.

Comment: I don't understand the Peter King hating, I see it on quite a few blogs. I generally like reading his column.

Comment: Of course he will say that G. If he picks the underdog to win and he wins, the King will look like a genius. If Hill doesn't win the job, nobody will say anything to King about picking Hill, since he was the underdog. King is an idiot.

Comment: Hey Matt, maybe I missed it somewhere but how did the niners defense look against the raiders, guys like Clements and Willis? Also, any idea how much of the offensive playbook was being run in these drills? Thanks, Matt

Comment: I guess that makes him King of the Hill supporters.

Comment: I read that too. He's the first person, that I'm aware of, to give Hill the edge to start. I think everyone here, so far, has given the edge to Smith. King gives Hill the edge based on winning games late in the season last year, but doesn't talk about how well Hill has been playing in practice so far. I think the starter will be chosen based on performance this year alone.

Comment: Peter King of SI thinks Hill will win the starting job. What do you think, Matt?
