O'Sullivan to start 49ers' exhibition opener

J.T. O'Sullivan will get the first chance to prove what he can do. Coach Mike Nolan announced just moments ago that O'Sullivan will start the 49ers' exhibition opener Friday night against the Raiders.

Nolan said O'Sullivan will work with the first team for the first quarter to quarter-and-a-half because he is less familiar with O'Sullivan than Alex Smith and Shaun Hill. Obviously, Smith and Hill have started games in the past for the 49ers. O'Sullivan is in his first season with the 49ers.

"We have experience with Shaun and Alex in game situations, and we do not have that experience with J.T. O'Sullivan," Nolan said.

He added that this does not mean O'Sullivan is atop the team's depth chart. Nolan said this is only the announcement of which quarterback will start Friday.

Smith is scheduled to play the remainder of the first half and start the third quarter against the Raiders, Nolan said. Hill will finish the game.

"I'm excited about our quarterbacks," Nolan said. "I'm excited about all three of them. They've done a very good job. I continue to feel better and better about the possibility of us actually having three guys who can play and win games for us during the season."

The first unit will be in the game, along with O'Sullivan. With the injuries at wideout, Josh Morgan and Jason Hill can be expected to see a lot of action with the ones.

O'Sullivan took every first-team rep this afternoon during practice. He completed 10 of 16 passes with two interceptions (his first two in 11-on-11 drills), while Smith completed 3 of 6, and Hill completed 3 of 7.

Bottom line: This does not make O'Sullivan the front-runner, but he clearly has a chance to apply some pressure to the other starting candidates with a good showing. Smith looked very good in the morning. Hill also played well in the morning. Neither Smith nor Hill had much of a chance to get any rhythm going in the afternoon.

* * *

In other practice notes: DeShaun Foster and Dashon Goldson were among the players who were rested. Keith Lewis took over at free safety for Goldson. . . . The danger of the hot reads became apparent today when Nate Clements sniffed out an interception on a quick dumpoff to Morgan. . . . Jeff Ulbrich also recorded an interception of a quick slant. . . . O'Sullivan showed excellent touch on a deep ball to Delanie Walker for a big gain. . . . Cam Colvin had a couple nice catches, including an intermediate route from Alex Smith in which he jumped up and plucked it away from Walt Harris. . . . O'Sullivan and Isaac Bruce showed nice timing on a deep out. O'Sullivan let the ball fly well before Bruce made his move. The ball was completed in front of Clements. . . . LB Dennis Haley broke up a Hill pass to Dominique Zeigler on a hot read. . . . O'Sullivan hit Davis down the seam. Davis had a couple steps on Patrick Willis in coverage. . . . Defensive lineman LaJuan Ramsey batted down a Hill pass at the line of scrimmage. . . . Tully Banta-Cain got through and would've had a sack on Smith, who ended up throwing a pass out of bounds -- well, it would've gone out of bounds if DBs coach Johnnie Lynn hadn't caught it. . . . On 7-on-7, Jason Hill made a nice diving catch outside the numbers on an O'Sullivan pass. . . . Reggie Smith made an interception of a Hill pass (or at least from 50 yards away, it looked as if Smith made the catch. He held it aloft in an attempt to convince those watching). . . . Colvin made another jumping catch, using his body like a shield to ward off a defender, of a Hill pass.

That's it for now. Back at it tomorrow, as the 49ers have just one practice scheduled. They're scheduled to go from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

You all sound like very little men. I've lost the use of my left aem but I think I could kick any of your asses! Sorry, I lost my temper.

Comment: There's absolutely no doubt race plays a huge role in how people perceive BO. I would venture his name plays as big a role in peoples reluctance to embrace him as his ethnicity. There is no doubt he has a tremendous amount of charisma. He is definitely the anit-McCain who is about as interesting as a pair of socks. My problems with the guy are his socialist leanings coupled with his lack of experience. The guy has done nothing to this point. People are interested because he has charm and seems to be the anti-establishment guy.

Comment: ninerindallas, you are probably too young to remember what things were like 30 years ago. The idea that a black man could win the presidency was beyond crazy. So we've come a hell of a long way - but there are still a lot of voters who are 60 and older who grew up in a prejudiced society and can't quite completely give up their old ideas. There's really no question about that being a big factor - none. By the way, Jesse wanted to cut off Obama's nuts. Ripping them off would be brutal and beneath a man of his character.

Comment: tgflynn--if you dis-agree with something i have posted plz bring it to my attention and state you case with some facts, i have no problem listening to the other side if they have some facts. now to just lob some lame insult in the general way of myself, houston 9er and mike nolan, not only shows lack of character, but lack of conviction, imagination, and the jewels to say what you really think. grow a pair, and then look someone straight in the eye and say what you feel and think, and that person will at least respect the fact you can do that. as for right now i couldn't respect you less if i tried

Comment: Why isn't Obama running away with it? He is in California. The unfortunate fact is that a lot of people in middle and southern America are having a tough time voting for a black man - even one who is whiter than most of them except for skin color. For the most part it isn't the ugly racism that was the norm 40 years ago, just a lingering suspicion that when Obama gets in, he may become Jesse Jackson. That's not an unreasonable concern but I think that as America gets more familiar with Obama, the poll numbers will widen.

Comment: Wow, I thought it would at least take until after the first exhibition game for the feeling of hopelessness to set in. I have a suggestion for Nolan, after he's fired he should move to Dallas or Houston because if prior comments on this board are any indication that's where all the mentally challenged ex-Californians go.

I gladly pay my fair share and have no problem improving our country in every way needed. Obama specifically has a redistribution plan to increase taxes paid by individuals in my bracket by over 40% and "redistribute" it to individuals in the lowest tax bracket. Why in the world would I support this guy?

Comment: As for redistributing your hard earned income. It's not going to welfare recipients. It's going to build bridges and highways and schools. To provide healthcare and upgrades to our nation's energy and telecommunications infrastructure...things we need to stay competitive. It goes to support the military, the police, the fire department and our veterans who put their lives on the line so that you could be free to make that hard earned cash. This stuff isn't free. You can't take advantage of the opportunities afforded to you by your country...all those "socialist" public works programs that gave you your clean drinking water, your education, highways, railways, homeland security, the internet, safe streets and clean air...all those things that gave you that uniquely American opportunity to succeed...you can't just take advantage of those things and not return some of your dividends. Anyone who gets rich because America allows them to do so owes our country and future generations. So stop being selfish. Patriotism is more than waving a flag, voting Republican and slapping a bumpersticker on your SUV.

Comment: To sum it up, it is pathetic that such a storied franchise has such a rudderless ship at QB. The fact Smith is a number one pick and is not clearly "the guy" is pathetic. The fact that Smith has had no consistent coaching and direction in four years is an absolute crime and huge waste of money. The biggest problem is we all have been subjected to this crap by ownership and management. Let's get to the season and finally see how this bad dream plays out.

I also love being able to live in a very nice, very large home in Houston on a golf course for under 400k. I like being able to have my home paid off, and my kids college funded before I'm 45. If you have anything to do with it, you'll take my VERY HARD EARNED money and "redistribute" it to someone who wants to sit on his a** all day and take handouts. Maybe you should leave, we need DIE HARD fans! UPSET - sure FED-UP- ok WANTING CHANGE- fine. But to blog on here like your a fan and talk about turning your back on the team is down right dispicable!! So we have a qb situation, SO WHAT! Arizona has a can't win $h!t ever situation. Oakland has a crazy owner and doomed to lose situation. Detroit has a three 1st round WR's and not much else to show for it situation. And you want to abandon ship over QB compition? The browns were in the same situation last season and things worked out for them. Hey, the Raiders don't have a QB compition you can join that sorry bunch. Comment: Here's what's happening. There really is a three way QB race. Throw Alex in there in the first game, and if he struggles, he can't win the competition, in the eyes of fans and media. So have JTO - who knows the offense best - start the first game. Hill starts the second, and Alex - who hopefully will have gotten more comfortable - the third. I think Nolan said originally that after the second game a decision would be made. But I think they will push it to after the third game. One problem is that each of these guys will be playing at some point behind second and third stringers on the offensive line, and there is potential for injury. Unavoidable under the circumstances. You know, we all have our favorites that we are emotionally involved with. But the important thing is to put somebody at QB who can win some games. I do think the preseason will actually mean something this time, and I hope that one of the three really stands out and we can rally behind him.

Comment: Sounds like a bit of sarcasm on Bruce's part...basically he's saying you have until the regular season to learn, bcuz b4 that nothing means (expletive)! As much as it bothers me, staying mum in the media isn't always a bad thing. Rice, Montana, and many other greats have had their share of media dodging. Its better than VD opening his mouth anytime someone will listen about being the best, blah, blah, blah. PROVE IT! Don't let your mouth write a check your butt can't cash!

Comment: If you guys take Clemens away from the Jets, I will have to become a 9er fan. I followed him and Derek Anderson in Oregon and like the progression both have made into the nfl.Bringing him back to the west coast would be incredible. But I figure Michael Robinson and Arnaz Battle have a better chance to be qb for the 9ers than anyone on another team at this moment.

"I say one full training camp and four preseason games," Bruce said."....

Comment: The Yorks should sell the team to Mark Cuban! What a great love/hate/hate relationship that would be! Love him when the 49ers are winning. Hate him when the Mavericks and Cubs come to town. He could then buy the Ducks, Kings or Avalanche and make it complete! None of us would ever have to go far to share the love/hate with our owner; he'd be right there all the time! Oh, and for all you out there who never passed Sarcasm 101 in school, I was joking.

Posted By: Vermonator (07/08/2008 8:06:11 AM)
Comment: I realize O'Sullivan is more familiar with Martz' offense and all, but it's just sad that Smith (a #1 pick) can't beat out a couple of career back ups. Looks to me like we have three second string quarterbacks, or maybe more like one second and two thirds. Jeff Garcia is starting to look better and better.

Posted By: oneniner (07/08/2008 8:01:07 AM)
Comment: Indy - of course JTO would not win the "competition"....this is not UC Davis!!!......nolan is only trying to avoid what happened last yr "dilfer story"....he wants to be sure his backsup are ready in case of injury....the injury to A.Smith (who really needs a nickname badly) was his/our excuse last season....this season injury is not going to be an excuse.....

Posted By: Houston 9er (07/08/2008 7:59:19 AM)
Comment: ninerindallas, your last line is classic. freaking awesome!!! i wouldnt mind the yorks selling the niners to owners who actually had some clout in the league. i also wouldnt mind seeing a spot in the playoffs. my panties are definitely in a wad over the qb play. IMHO the 9ers are above average in every position group except WR and qb. The o-line play last year was subpar but they have the talent to be very good. My opinion is that even average qb play will get the 9ers at least 8 wins and maybe more. So here's to JTO or AS or SH actually earning some of their money.

Posted By: Bryan (Stockton) (07/08/2008 7:49:53 AM)
Comment: Logic behind decision?: 1.) Osullivan knows the offense and gives them the best chance to look OK during their first exposure to the public (and potential ticket purchasers). 2.) Going against the 2nd string defense will probably boost Smith's confidence. 3.) Smith will probably get more reps in which in the end is the most important thing in early preseason.

Posted By: LodiGrapePicker (07/08/2008 7:34:02 AM)
Comment: Why are people getting their panties in a wad? This is just the 1st preseason game. Let's see what JTO can do. He obviously knows the offense better then Smith or Hill.

Posted By: NW Niner (07/08/2008 7:32:15 AM)
Comment: It is a shrewd move if the real reason to start JTO is to a. Take pressure of Smith/ Hill and b. Help the other skill position players learn the system with a QB who can run it smoothly. And if JTO ends up winning the job in the process, then what is the harm? Sounds like a win win to me. Smith/ Hill get more development time with less pressure, and we really do get a chance to see JTO in action. Also the rest of the offense gets a smoother version of the offense.

Comment: What an odd assortment of "fans" we have here. It's the first preseason game and some people are barking over the QB spot. If we only had Alex Smith (or Shaun Hill or J.T. O'Sullivan or Chad Pennington) and a bag of greasy, stale donuts, half the people here would be crabbing that Nolan should start the bag of donuts! That's barking, crabbing AND a bag of donuts in one blog. Journalism at its finest!

Comment: If JTO throws 3 picks and is sacked 18 times AND Alex looks bad against the 2nd stringers then what? Maybe we should trade all the qbs and let Michael Robinson run the option or single wing all year.

Comment: I still think Alex is our QB, and it's been decided, but Martz thinks he needs to do this to get Nolan off Hill for the backup. But don't real head coaches have a huge fear their starter will go down if left in with the number 2 OL during preseason? They won't do it. If we lose Alex in this meaningless game behind the two's, I don't think I'm alone in thinking we're worse off.

Comment: Just got done watchin Hard Knocks on HBO. As much as I hate the Cowgirls, they clearly have veteran leadership (starting with the owner) and they have a good sense of comraderie. Seems like these are some key ingredients our beloved 9ers are missing. I know they just went to the movies and all, but do these guys really like eachother? You never hear much about the team having any fun...If you look back at some of the great teams we've had, they have always had a bond outside of the football field. They would sing crazy songs like "We're the 49ers" and raps that sounded completely ridiculous, but bottomline, they had fun. Matt, is it just late at night, or do we really lack any identity? Maybe JTO and Mad Mike can bring some personality back to the BAY.

Nolan lies just like good old George W. I cant wait to see us lose another 11 to 12 games this season maybe we could talk Dilfer out of retirement why not we aint going to win with a NFL europe QB. Comment: Thinking about this more, I think this is a good move for AS. He can see JTO work the offense, see that he has more talent and think, "I can do this" and lights a fire under him. I also think that it may be a bit early for him in terms of understanding success. He has been a bit shell-shocked over the past few years. It is important for his psyche to have success. once the 1's get a bit used to the offense, AS can come in and have that success. If he started this game and didn't do well (and be honest, when do they look good in the 1st game), it would start everyone sniping. Let the team settle in and AS will come in and prove that he can produce. remember, he's drinking through a firehose

Comment: Hey Matt, I know that Nolan will take Martz' opinion over anyone else's on choosing a QB, but do you know if he asks the receivers for their input? Has he talked to Bruce/Johnson/Battle/Davis/Gore (the guys actually catching the ball) on who they feel most comfortable with?

Posted By: BP (06/08/2008 10:51:47 PM)
Comment: After watching Sunday's practice and today's I couldn't tell whether Smith or O'Sullivan was ahead in the race. Both looked pretty good. I thought both were stronger and more accurate than Hill. My impression is that JT is at least the 2nd QB. Smith did throw a couple of passes that bounced of receivers hands. Looked to me like he's throwing pretty hard, and maybe a little too hard, as he seemed to do last year at times.

Posted By: samr (06/08/2008 10:51:39 PM)

Comment: Immediately call the Jets and grab Clemens. DO IT! He is better than either of our qbs and the Jets are idiots for stopping his development. NE is still the better team and they should have used this year to develop Clemens. In a year, Clemens will be a top 5 qb. PLEASE GRAB HIM for a 2nd round pick we will have to use next year again for a qb anyway.

Comment: I will preface my comments with: I am a Smith supporter. I genuinely want this kid to succeed. I feel like he has been the Guinnea Pig in a sick experiment of HOW NOT TO DEVELOPE A QB. I lost a lot of respect for Nolan last year and he's done little to gain it back thus far. I do like this call though. This offense needs to start gelling regardless of who is pulling the trigger. Sulli is the man right now who can operate it. I say start him and let our weapons' muscle memory begin absorbing and perfecting Martz' offense. Give AS a good year in this offense before plays another game. He's easily still young enough for this to work. Riding pine for a season will probably make him hungrier and more eager to assert himself and it will also give his shoulder another year to recover more fully. Hill was born to be a '3rd stringer' so he can stay put.

Comment: Johnnie Lynn is a pretty nice fellow as well as a former Bruin. Did you know he played baseball at UCLA as well? Matt, i'd like to know your perspective on Nolan as a coach. How does he run things compared to the previous couple regimens. Would you say he's a legit NFL coach? A bit of insider info as well, I happen to know a current niner as well as a past one and the feeling from both is that he's not that great of a coach as well as having a bit of a power issue.(which is somewhat evident with what he did to winborn and a few of the other players)

Comment: actually think its a good decision.....lets see wht jto can do....its the same raiders they played with days ago.......i think it makes sense to ease smith into it....he has to be hungry when he comes in the 2nd qtr, maybe the hunger will last........A.Smith is definitely our starting qb

Posted By: shobbrobb (06/08/2008 10:07:17 PM)
Comment: Surprising but correct choice to make.O,Sullivan at this point is more game ready no need to bring down the team anymore by forcing A.Smith down everyones throat,if he is as "talented" a lot of u guys think he is,he will learn the offense and move into the starting position.I like the fact that he has to win the position,i dont think he will be given the job as he has in the past.If he cant beat out O'Sullivan he doesnt deserve to start.lets see how he responds!

Comment: Right now, anything is possible. JTO just might be the next Cinderella story the NFL has been waiting for...Either way you slice it, Nolan should be FIRED. If the offense does well, it's because Nolan had no part of it. If the offense sucks, it's because Nolan didn't have enough involvement. Either way, Nolan....YOU'RE FIRED! (ala Trump) GO NINERS!

Posted By: Mike in Sac (06/08/2008 9:32:04 PM)
Comment: This is probably too far out to be true....but, I think Martz is screwing with Nolan. He tanks this year, gets Nolan fired, picks up another high pick and wammo, he has an offense he developed over two years and the D will be coming into its prime with no coaching changes. We then might finally have a chance with mad Mike. Sounds funny but isn't life usually weirder than fiction?

Comment: Whoa. O'Sullivan to start on Friday. Great info, Matt. I know it will only be the first game of the preseason, but this feels like a big deal. I like Nolan's explanation. Nolan's desire to watch this guy in a live game situation makes sense, but that's not the only reason O'Sullivan is getting the start. He must have really impressed the coaches in practice. It sounds like O'Sullivan has a legit chance to win the starting job. Maybe J.T.'s "edge" is what the coaches think has been missing from the 9ers QB position over the last couple years. Alex definitely doesn't seem to be that kind of guy. I bet Alex does good when he takes over in the 2nd Qtr. though, and I bet he gets the start in the next game. But who knows. When do you think the decision about the starting QB for the regular season will be made? I've always heard by week 3 of the preseason, but the way this is shaping up I could see it lasting into the final week.

Comment: Hopefully this helps explain that JTO is CLEARLY in the lead of this competition. First on KNBR yesterday morning Nolan stated that "yesterday did clear some things up in some cases" (referring to the raiders scrimmage) Here is a response today to a question from nfl.com RE: What about J.T. O'Sullivan, how has he looked, because to me he almost has a step up because he knows the offense? "I don't know if it is because he knows the offense but he has done some good things. Against Oakland, he stepped in and did some good things as well. Everything doesn't play out as you hope when you get to the line of scrimmage. There are reactions that go with every play. Defense did something you didn't expect, maybe they even do what you expect, but they have a good player who overcomes something. I think he has handled that pretty well. He did a nice job of that the other day. I also thought the other guys did a pretty good job of that but that is one of the things I saw a few times where he improvised and made a couple of plays. I am pleased with all three quarterbacks though. So it's good competition, but I am pleased with all three." He tired not to say but - there IS a reason JTO is starting on Friday.

Posted By: 5Niner (06/08/2008 8:01:48 PM)
Comment: ShaneO - the Ravens are going thru it. Plus there are at least 4 other teams with QB competitions I can think of: Falcons, Dolphins, Jets and Bears. I hope Smith get another crack at it because I think he can be good, but at least this trio is better than the trio of Rattay, Dorsey and Pickett. We will be competitive this year because all 3 are better than an injured Smith and a healthy Dilfer. We were 5-11 last year and should have beaten the Ravens and Falcons. If the defense improves and the QB play improves marginally, then we can compete in this division. So whoever the QB is, I will support them and the team.

Comment: Matt, is there not a difference between equal and equitable? Equal distribution of reps w/starters is "fair" if JTO, Smith & Hill all have equal ignorance of the system. But JTO has a full year in the system, so equal distribution with Smith & Hill actually plays to JTO's advantage because they have the same number of reps as him, but less familiarity to work from. So "equal" in this case is not the same as equitable. As a Dad, Nolan totally understands this; it is why it would be unfair for the little brother to have to start from the same line as big brother in a race. So by giving JTO equal reps for the last week and now equal time w/starters, Nolan is giving JTO an unfair advantage over Smith & Hill, while preaching fairness to the media. It makes no sense at all. If he thinks JTO is the guy, he should give him ALL the reps and get the team ready for the season. I just can't figure out how this process is getting the Niners ready for the Cardinals.

Comment: Matt, thanks again for the great reporting! Is Martz really going to let Nolan have say in who the starting QB is? Any idea what Martz thinks of any of this? Have you been able to get his read on the QB situation? Finally, what do the other players think? Do the receivers and other offensive players think one guy should be the starter? There must be opinions out there. Anyone willing to speak up off the record?

Posted By: ShaneO (06/08/2008 7:32:15 PM)
Comment: I think you can make a good argument on both sides... sure smith will be the starter and should get the reps but giving him the time to learn and starting him in game 3 when starters play more also makes sense. it just sucks that we are in this spot at all, and we have a THREE man race for QB.. who the hell else goes thru that... my biggest fear is they all blow and we end up with the number one pick and have to start all over... AGAIN!

Posted By: Jon in SoCal (06/08/2008 7:21:50 PM)
Comment: IF this really meant nothing, Nolan would have announced it weeks ago. Nolan has already said that he wants a decision by the second game. Hard to to that if there are 3 guys in competition.

Posted By: SF_Dan (06/08/2008 7:19:24 PM)
Comment: I cant beleive what I am reading. Fans whining for Smith. Are you kidding me? It's been widely noted that Smith has struggled to pick up the offense, struggled with his progression of reads, and struggled to throw the short passes. And finally, it's been noted that JTO has been the best QB basically everyday since he's been in the race. So making AS the starter after all that info makes sense why? Nolan made the right decision. If JTO falls on his face, back to square one. When he goes out and plays well on Friday, though, we just move one week closer to him becoming the niners starting QB.

Comment: The sky is falling! The sky is falling!! You people disgust me. Where were all you people threatening to give up on the 49ers when Dwight Clark, Dennis Erickson and Terry Donahue were running the once-proud organization into the ground, with a great big assist from the Yorks?? So there's a QB controversy. Big deal. You've all grown soft in your Montana to Young days. The rest of the team is strong. Look across the bay at the Raiders. Look at the crap they've had to deal with for decades now. Raider fans are die hards. On the other hand, you're just pitiful. Sack up. I'm a niner fan. I've seen better and I've seen worse. Comment: Matt- having attended camp for years, how do the receivers look as opposed to recent classes? I'm thinking that even though their main pickup, Bryant Johnson, has been hurt...Jason Hill, Josh Morgan and Cam Colvin are showing more potential than the Antonio Bryant, Cedrick Wilson, Brandon Lloyd classes. And old man Bruce can still hit his marks. Lelie had better get healthy soon if he wants to survive cuts. I arrive there only through my reading of the coverage. Am I delusional?

Comment: Check the previous post... looks like I was right! Hope Alex can take control by game three. Hill may start the next game and then Smith the third. Keep in mind the third game is the pivetol game so thats still a good look for Smith. By then he should be much more up to speed instead of throwing him out to the wolves in the new offense. Trust me we dont want his confidence down (he will be our starter). They'll keep Smith with the 2's so he can get used to his new young recievers(J Hill, Morgan, Colvin, Zeigler's making a splash). He knows Battle. Johnson and Bruce I quess Leilie are vets. My quess is Hill and Smiths 1st teams snaps may up a bit after this game. Unless JT is way better because close wont cut it.

Comment: All I keep reading is Hill trying all the hot reads. I wish Smith would get some practice in on those. NOW is the time to work on it & keep improving. I dream of the day our QB is Brady-like anticipating & easily countering the blitz for a potential big gain to make them pay. We all know our QB's will have to rely on it some but Martz should do a good job keeping the D off-balance. Still pulling for my man Colvin. Sounds like he's still in the mix. Keep up the good work Matt.

Comment: Waaaaaanhh....Nolan....Smith...Waaaahh! First preseason game of the year in an offense that only one QB and one WR know. The coaches want to be able to evaluate the skills players and it'll be easier to do if they're adequately running the offense. Give Hill and Smith a few more weeks to get more comfortable before throwing them to the proverbial lions and trying to figure out whether it's them or the receivers who are screwing up. That said, this is J.T.'s chance to pull a Kurt Warner. But with everyone else only marginally on the same page, I wouldn't count on it at this point.

Comment: There seems to be no other position in football where a single individual is given so much an allowable margin for failure than at Q.B.. Steve Young made a comment concerning the 9ers starting Q.B., "You don't have to win every game or know every game situation, but there should be some what of a wow factor about your Q.B. to show that he is the One". It is clearly evident that the 9ers brass after 3 years do not see the sucession of Young and Montana in the make-up Alex Smith. As much as I would like to see A. Smith succeed, I know there should be a distinct separation at this point from the other Q.B's. It is time we begin to label a busted situation just that, and get on with business of locating the future trigger man of the 49ers.

Comment: Assuming Smith ends up being the week 1 starter, maybe this could make sense. Another week or so to learn about the system before he gets thrown out there with the 1's. Could this be a trimmed-down version of young QB development that's been so lacking the last few years? We'll see...

Comment: My first impression is that Nolan and Martz want to get the offense as a whole pointed in the right direction early and the best chance to get EVERYBODY clicking is to put the most functional QB in Martz' system on the field. When we signed O'Sullivan Martz said that he would be ahead in the competition early . . . and here we are . . . early. In the meantime Smith and Hill are playing catch-up . . . which they probably will.

Comment: Of all Nolan's poor decisions this is easily and by far the worst, to be surpassed only when he declares someone other than Alex Smith the opening day starter. Is there a more stubborn man alive than Mike Nolan? Does he honestly think this is going to prevent him from getting fired? Does he know his firing is inevitable so he's trying to take the team down with him? Can anyone think of a single reason this is anything but completely idiotic?

Posted By: AF (06/08/2008 5:41:06 PM)
