Reflective TBC to make season debut against Pats

Pass-rusher Tully Banta-Cain was among the last 49ers to leave the locker room Sunday in New Orleans. That's unique because Banta-Cain did not even suit up for the game.

He said he was in no hurry to go anywhere, and he wanted to buy a little time for his iPod and laptop to fully charge for the trip home. But he also said he's been doing a lot of soul-searching after being inactive for the first four games of the season.

"It's been an emotional four weeks for me," Banta-Cain said. "I don't think I've been inactive since my rookie year when I was on PUP. . . . I've been reflecting a lot these last few weeks on my life and my career."

Banta-Cain is likely to make his season debut Sunday against his former team, the Patriots. Because of Manny Lawson's injury, Banta-Cain will suit and play primarily on special teams. He also hopes to get in a few snaps on defense. He has been asked to know several different positions, so he could be used as a backup for Justin Smith, Parys Haralson or Roderick Green.

It seems coincidental that Banta-Cain will be playing against the Patriots, after spending his first four seasons in New England.

"Obviously, you don't want a player to go down," Banta-Cain said. "But I knew at some point something would happen. I wasn't going to sit on the sideline without pads on for 16 games. That fact that it's against my ex-team at home, I couldn't draw it out any better."

Comment: I know this question is totally unrelated to this post, but do you think there's any chance of the 49ers making a trade for Roy Williams before the trade deadline? It looks like Detroit can't keep him and he already knows the Martz offense. He could be the #1 this team needs.

Response: From what I understand, Roy Williams wasn't exactly the best when it came to taking the time to learn Martz's offense. --Matt M.

Comment: The Pats will have a rookie QB in a hostile stadium. If there is ever a time to blitz, this is it. Plus, the PATS D is suspect. I think this might be the best gps game we have seen yet. To hell with Belichick. If our D is as good as it should be, and the offense doesn't self-destruct, we will be in this one.

Comment: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/nfl/10/03/phillips.sentenced.ap/index.html lawrence phillips gets 10 years in prison...haha! this news couldn't come at a better time. steve young's jersey will be retired on sunday and phillips was partly responsible for the hit that ended his career (he missed his block on a blitzing aeneas williams)...what a loser.

Comment: We should start writing what we think Nolan is going to say monday morning about why the 49ers lost. It pretty much is the same excuses for the last three seasons. I know, everyone points to higher pass completions, more offensive yardage, etc. But really the only stat that matters is wins. And the 49ers are lucky to be at .500.

Comment: Pats have scored 3 total TDs in 3 games. Matt Cassel isn't even passing like Sam Cassell, much less Brady. His numbers are worse than Alex Smith -- against Fins, Chiefs, and Jets! Absent a lot of gimmicks, Niner defense had better play very large at home. No excuses.

Comment: glad to hear that 'tbc' might get an opportunity to play. 'tbc' no doubt must feel that his 'star' has dimmed in the eyes of the coaches, so i'm sure he's 'chomping at the bit' for a chance to re-establish himself as a productive player. also, what is the status of ahmad brooks? thanks matt.

Comment: It's been a bit quiet on the Jennings front. Is there any thought that he may need surgery? When a shoulder pops out, it just keeps want to pop out

Comment: Hey Matt, I heard Fitz on KNBR giving you an assignment to tally up what happens when the Niners blitz vs. not. Hope those blitz numbers are much higher this Sunday, and with good results. Have a good weekend.

Comment: Alright, I just read that Belichick interview and got a little nauseous. It seems like he knows all of the Niners players and how they are being used. He had a spot-on description of how Justin Smith plays. He was quoting scores from games from 20 years ago. And, it seems like he has thought out every detail, like understanding that his team has had 50 practices on grass, so he doesn't have to be too concerned about the game being played on grass even though his team is mostly a turf team. Why do I get a bad feeling about this game?
