FIRST FULL DAY OF FREE AGENCY
8:07 p.m.: I just finished my story for tomorrow's paper, so I'll be packing up and heading home. I hope you all realize that this is not going to be something I do every day -- or ever again. I only did this play-by-play today because it was the start of free agency, and I figured it might be a nice way of tracking the action as it unfolded. But, as always, I'll try to continue to blog as news occurs. Thanks to everyone for all your comments and input. Good night.
5:47 p.m.: The 49ers just held a mini-press conference to announce the signings of Nate Clements and Michael Lewis. Clements will start at left cornerback, with the possibility that he will match up against the opposition's best player. Shawntae Spencer and Walt Harris will compete for the starting job on the other side. Harris will play the slot in nickel situations. Lewis will start at strong safety, with Mark Roman right now scheduled to start at free safety. Lewis (six-year contract, no money terms available) has the ability to slide down and play the dime back, which is closer to the line of scrimmage. Coach Mike Nolan confirmed that Ravens nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin will be arriving tonight. No contract for Franklin is official, but unless something unforeseen occurs, he will also be signing. Nolan said the signing of Clements (eight years, $80 million) does not take the 49ers out of the competition for linebacker Adalius Thomas. Other than that, Nolan declined to comment on Thomas. Nolan said Franklin is the only player who has scheduled a visit with the 49ers.
4:38 p.m.: Also, the 49ers are closing in on Ravens free-agent nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin, who is represented by Todd France, who is also Clements' agent. Franklin is 6-1, 320 pounds.
4:24 p.m.: CORNERBACK NATE CLEMENTS AND SAFETY MICHAEL LEWIS HAVE SIGNED WITH THE 49ERS.
4:18 p.m.: Two other free agents of interest, receiver Donte Stallworth and linebacker Adalius Thomas, did not make any visits today. I haven't been able to confirm whether they have visits scheduled anywhere.
4:10 p.m.: Nate Clements and Michael Lewis are still around. The 49ers are clearly focusing their efforts on getting something done with those two guys before the end of the day.
3:36 p.m.: LB Tully Banta-Cain (Patriots) is also in St. Louis.
3:01 p.m.: Receiver Drew Bennett (Titans), whom many thought would be a good fit for the 49ers, is spending the first day of free agency in St. Louis with the NFC West rival Rams. Bennett is a Bay Area native. No word on the whereabouts of the other top free-agent receiver, Donte' Stallworth (Eagles).
2:25 p.m.: I don't know if Clements and Lewis are still here or whether they've gone to get physicals. Those two players are the only free agents who have visited the 49ers today.
1:50 p.m.: Oops. Lewis is ranked as the No. 3 safety, not corner.
1:31 p.m.: I'm checking out Mel Kiper Jr.'s free-agent rankings. He has Michael Lewis ranked as the No. 3 corner in free agency behind Ken Hamlin (Seahawks) and Deon Grant (Jaguars). "A good force in the box, where he runs into trouble is in coverage," Kiper writes. "His stock is not nearly as high as it was 12 months ago, which should enable a team to sign him at a bargain rate." Nate Clements is rated as the No. 1 corner. "He possesses both the speed to stay with the faster wideouts in the league and the size to match up with the more physical ones," Kiper says.
1:08 p.m.: Anthony Adams pulled up to the front of the 49ers' team offices to grab some of his belongings. The 49ers will not make an effort to re-sign him because they don't see him being a fit for the 3-4 defensive scheme that the club wants to implement.
12:39 p.m.: Whenever a player comes to your team offices on the first day of free agency, that team is generally determined to not let that player leave without a signed contract. But you already knew that, didn't you?
12:34 p.m.: Neither Lewis nor Clements has signed a contract. Neither has taken a physical.
12:30 p.m.: Lewis, 26, is a strong safety, and a five-year veteran. He recorded 87 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions. He started six games for the Eagles, as he lost a lot of playing time to Sean Considine. He's 6-1, 222 pounds, and is the kind of physical players the 49ers want in the secondary. He made the Pro Bowl in 2004.
12:26 p.m.: Cornerback Nate Clements (Bills) and safety Michael Lewis (Eagles) are currently at the 49ers facility in Santa Clara.
11:31 a.m.: We know Jeremy Newberry isn't coming back to the 49ers. He is scheduled to have a physical with the Raiders on Monday. Depending on how things go there, he may or may not visit the Buccaneers on Tuesday.
10:19 a.m.: I have the ability to delete comments below, so please no curse words. My kids might be reading this (if they were old enough to read).
10:06 a.m.: I don't know how many people the 49ers have working the phones, but I've deduced that the team has made lots and lots of calls to lots and lots of free agents. They are casting out a wide net. There still has not been a confirmed visit.
9:39 a.m.: The 49ers have talked to Tully Banta-Cain's agent, Jim Sims, but no visit has been scheduled. Banta-Cain (Patriots) is traveling today to visit with a team that Sims declined to identify. "He might have subsequent visits," Sims said. "When he tells me to get a deal done, he won't visit any more places."
8:44 a.m.: If my readers want to post the latest rumors from around the league in the comments section, feel free.
8:40 a.m.: This year more than ever, I expect there to be a lot of rumors flying around about different players and different teams. I'm sure I'll hear all those rumors, but what I hope to report on this blog are things I've learned or confirmed.
8:24 a.m.: The 49ers will not sign anyone until he has passed a physical. Mike Nolan is due in the office this morning in about a half-hour. The 49ers have huge interest in both LB Adalius Thomas and CB Nate Clements. I haven't been able to get anything concrete about their whereabouts.

Comment: Is the public able to spy a look at the organized team activities? Every summer we load up the kids in the van and drive west for vacation. If we included the bay area in our trek in June, is there a chance we could see a practice?

Comment: Matt, ur da MAN! Kudos 2 you dude. Dat was some real intense reporting you did on that blog. 4 us die-hard NINER fans the re-birth of the team has 2 be the best Easter present i've had in my life. I pretty much cover all the papers here in da bay area and no-body comes even close to doing the 'die-hard' insider reporting that you do for us fans. Thank you much buddy n you got my vote for the Bay Area Hall of Fame!

Comment: Matt, just adding to the choir, thanks for the coverage. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
Also, I think Porter'd be a great addition to the team. His leadership on defense would be a huge gain, not to mention his stats...

Comment: Matt, thank you for the play by play coverage yesterday. I think you probably give not only the best 49er coverage but likely among the best coverage of any NFL team. With over 170 comments to yesterday's blog, its clear I'm not alone in appreciating your efforts.

Comment: Uhh, Matt, its 10:20, I've been sitting here opposite my computer screen for ages now, waiting for this morning's fix from you, unable to concentrate on anything else. So how about it -
Are Drew Bennett and Tully Banta-Cain going to be visiting Santa Clara today, or was St Louis their first and final stop?
Is Aubrayo Franklin in the building, or did he really re-sign with Baltimore?
Are we really going after Ashley Lelie (hard to believe we would)?
Anything on Stallworth? Porter? Spragan? Anyone?
You're the greatest.

I am sure you know from everyone's comments how much you are appreciated by us fans. You are truly the best. Thanks again.

Comment: If the AT to New England reports are true, I wonder if our hardcore pursuit of Clements was at a detriment to our chances of landing AT. Not so much financially, but as a gesture of revealing who is our top target (maybe AT was slighted in seeing Nate visit before he did). Anyway, I doubt we would have done much better than the 6 years and $60M he got, and NE does have the more recent history of producing championship teams. oh well, good luck with your post-concussive syndrome and early Alzheimer's after Belichick forces you to practice after getting knocked out. $60 million can pay for a pretty good neurologist.

Comment: Hey Tom, I think Joey Porter might be interested in coming to the Niners. Not only he is from Bakersfield, Ca., but the Niners also play the 3-4 defense. Now as far as the teams that might go after him are the Browns, and the Cowboys because they are the only team I think in the NFL plays the 3-4 defense. I know that the Chargers also play the 3-4 but they already have Shawne Merriman, and Shaun Phillips as their outside linebackers. The only team though I think that might give the Niners some competition in Joey Porter will be Cleveland, because they are in the same division as the Steelers, and he would love to stick it to them, and go to the Browns. Also, for those people think the Joey Porter has some character issues, besides being accidently shot in the you know what, give me one incident where you have read were he ran into some legal issues in his career. Remember the reason the Steelers cut him is because they are moving from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3. Also, Joey Porter is the kind of leader that Mike Nolan is looking for like the way he had it in Baltimore with Ray Lewis as far as a vocal leader on the field that can offset Bryant Young's leadership, because BY is more of a lead by example leader.

Comment: Tom, Remo, and Dave. You are right. Especially you Tom. If that dood will pay attention more, and listen a little bit the contact is more of 5 year deal. It's 8 years that way they can spread it out, so the niners have some more cash to play with in free agency. Also, for those who think we over paid Nate Clements your talking about a guy that has not missed a game in 91 starts, and in Michael Lewis your talking about one of the hardest hitters in the NFL. These people who are complaining about overspending on Nate Clements, and Michael Lewis probably haven't seen these boys play.People keep forgetting the Wide Receivers that the NFC West has in Issac Bruce, Tory Holt with the Rams, Larry Fitzgerald, Anquain Bolden, and Bryant Johnson with the Cards., and Darrell Jackson, and Deion Branch with the Seahawks. Mike Nolan has a plan for this off season. First think Nolan did is bolster that secondary knowing the type of physical receivers that he has to face in the NFC west. Now he will probably concentrating on the front 7, and maybe wide receiver. Niners will be signing Aubreyo Franklin to solidfy the Nose Tackle position who Nolan coached with the Ravens, and don't be surprised if Dante Stallworth is in here has well pretty soon, and Tulla Banta-Cain, or even Jerry Porter. Remember it's only a the second day of free agency people, besides the Niners, no other team made any major signings except with Cleveland, and Buffalo. Like Mike Nolan said, "free agency is not a sprint, it a marathon, with the draft in between." Also, Nolan said this team will not even look like the 2006 team, and when the 2007 season rolls around the will going to have 7 or 8 new starters on defense. Now he has 3 new starters on an improving defense. He has 4-5 more to go. Get excited everyone. Niners are moving where they belong, at the top of the NFL thanks to Mike Nolan, and Scott McCloughan.
Posted By: Tom in SR (03/03/2007 7:12:11 AM)
Comment: The Niners didn't even burn half their cap space yesterday. The choices to play opposite Manny Lawson are now Porter (or other FA), trade or draft pick. Any of these options should be either a little or much cheaper than Thomas. They should at least invite Porter in for a visit . . . if he's interested.

Comment: Either the Yorks are too cheap, or the spend too much money of FAs. Get your story straight, whiners. Also make sure you understand how much Clements will actually get on this deal before you start whining about how he got paid too much.

Comment: "Don't be surprised when we wake up tomorrow and no big-name free agents are visiting the 49ers. They wasted all their money ..."
Did you not read the quotes from Nolan, or do you have some special inside information on the 49ers finances that even he doesn't know about. He specifically said this doesn't take them out of the running for Adalius T. How did they spend all their money? You know nothing.

Comment: Gee, Seau doesn't think that Seau is done. How do you come by your information Peter?

Comment: Lesrok... Seau's done. Donnie Edwards on the other hand is not - guy's still got game and may come cheap.
Posted By: Lesrok (02/03/2007 11:54:17 PM)
Comment: Not to continue beating a drum, but I just remembered another aging Charger linebacker, in the later stages of his career, who made an impact on a rebuilding 49er team. Do you remember Gary Plummer? He was good on the field, but he made his biggest impact in the locker room, via his leadership skills and experience. Junior Seau would be an ideal fit in the same role. A quote from the ESPN article that I referenced earlier says, "In addition to being effective against the run, Seau was a positive influence in the New England locker room, and Patriots coach Bill Belichick places a high premium on such intangibles." Seau lives in California, so I think that he would jump at the chance to be a part of an exciting young team on the way up such as the 49ers. Matt, could you put a bug in Nolan's ear, and ask him about Seau?
Posted By: six_parnassus (02/03/2007 11:39:36 PM)
Comment: I dunno. Porter strikes us as Bryant squared in terms of offfield instability. No one doubts Porter's playmaking. But the Yorks, trickled down through Nolan, may be justifiably wary of someone like Porter. [ http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/steelers/s_495739.html ]. Porter hasn't killed anyone but he's already been a gunshot vic & involved with several incidents that betray poor judgement for someone approaching 30 and his last contract (cf. AB). Then again, Nolan et al. could easily roll the dice on someone like Porter if they can't get AT (caving into FA rush/adrenaline/leverage a la Clements).

Comment: Don't be surprised when we wake up tomorrow and no big-name free agents are visiting the 49ers. They wasted all their money on Clements and overpaid for Michael Lewis. Cool, we got better in the secondary but what about that pass rush? Rely on Manny Lawson just as we did last offseason?
Posted By: Mike G. (02/03/2007 11:13:23 PM)
Comment: Don't be surprised when we wake up tomorrow that Joey Porter, and Dante Stallworth is visiting the Niners. By Adalius Thomas signing, he actually he did the Niners a favor. With the money that the Niners was going to use on him, they can use it to sign Jerry Porter, Dante Stallworth, and even Leonard Davis. Remember today was the first day of free agency. We still have tomorrow so I wont be surprised if the niners signed 2 more players besides Aubrayo Franklin.

Comment: No moles at the Globe as of 11pm ET. The Globe only reports Thomas is "scheduled" to arrive in Beantown today (Sat) while Thomas's agent promises it's been and will be "crazy" for the "next day or two" until Thomas actually arrives *and* signs ... [ http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/articles/2007/03/02/patriots_expecting_thomas/?p1=MEWell_Pos3 ]. The next day or "two". As in how many days required to outbid NE. Will nice chats with Bill (at the Pro Bowl) convince AT to take (much) less money? Possibly, but not likely.

If you had typed a single rumor or guess it would have ruined the effect entirely. Comment: Ditto re mucho thanks for the blow-by-blows. || Meanwhile, inclined to agree with those who think SF overpaid for Clements or that superior DLs make a bigger impact, are a better *longterm* investment than any single, cap-sinking CB with limited shelf-life. Except, there were no FA DL sure-things this year and Spencer's injury history did beg more consistency so Nolan/McCloughan apparently determined Clements (hopefully uninfluenced by ESPN squawking heads) a "sure" bet for unit improvement though Nolan's path to Clements was obviously clearer than it is/was to Thomas. Still, $80m is a huge chunk of cap change for 1 FA. Add whatever we paid for MLewis and it's hard to imagine any recent perennial contender or Super Bowl team flush with cap space who tried to spend it all in one offseason. Especially an offseason as short on quality FA depth as this one (discarded LBs aside). Keeping our fingers triple-crossed SF can find "several" DL starters from the draft. Franklin (NT) isn't a sure thing, wasn't a starter at BAL.

Comment: I understand that Junior Seau is once again a free agent. He was having a pretty good year with the Pats(70 combined tackles in 11 games), before he got injured against the Bears and went on IR. Seau is very familiar with the 3-4 defense. Might he be someone that the Niners could bring in as a veteran presence to help stabilize our new defense? He still wants to play: http://sports.espn.go.com
/nfl/news/story?id=2691198 and he possibly could be signed for a fairly reasonable price since he is no spring chicken. It may be worth looking into.

Comment: How about darrel jackson as an option to fill the need at receiver. Although he has been injury prone, i would give up one of the fourth rounds picks to get him. But the seahawks might be asking for more, and also may not want to trade him inside the division.

Profootballtalk are saying that the Adalius Thomas contract story isn't official, so there is still hope.
Posted By: Mike G. (02/03/2007 7:32:00 PM)
Comment: Here is a weird thought, but I think when Joey Porter became available in free agency, Nolan decided not to schedule a visit with Adalius Thomas. Nolan might be going after Joey Porter instead. If he hadn't I think he would have brought Thomas, Clements, and Lewis in. So, I think Nolan might be going after Joey Porter instead. I think Joey Porter might be a better fit for the Niners 3-4 defense to play opposite Manny Lawson.
Posted By: sean gaughan (02/03/2007 7:27:22 PM)
Comment: i love the fact that we signed Clements, but the price is a little to high. hopefully he won't be a bust. on other hand, Manny Lawson DID play DE in college. so i'am hoping that the niners can make a deal with Joey Porter and put him opposite of Brandon Moore (who in my opinion is are best LB), Marques Douglas and Manny Lawson at both ends and put BY back at his most comfortable position DT. if none of that happens, the niners need to find a way to least get Alan Branch and Sydney Rice in the 2nd round.
Posted By: Mike G. (02/03/2007 7:24:51 PM)
Comment: I forgot about Antwan Peek as well. He has also played in the 3-4 defense as well. However, I think Joey Porter is a better at the 3-4 defense for the Niners.
Posted By: Mac (02/03/2007 7:08:54 PM)
Comment: Do you think niners will look at Antwan Peek and Tully Banta-Cain now that Thomas is a Patriot? Do you see any O-line moves?
Posted By: Tim (02/03/2007 6:59:27 PM)
Comment: Although Thomas would have been nice as well, Clements was clearly the better option. I hate to use this term, but it applies to Clements...SHUT DOWN CORNER! There aren't many 27 year old shut down corners on the market on any given year. Clements obviously wanted to be here, Thomas didn't. Also, don't under estimate the need to compete in our own division with talented WR duos such as Fitzgerald and Boldin, Holt and Bruce, Jackson and Branch. This was a very smart decision to go with Clements.
Posted By: Mike G. (02/03/2007 6:48:01 PM)
Comment: Just because we lost out of Adalius Thomas. That does not mean Mike Nolan is done. Remember Joey Porter, Tully Banta-Cain, and Jarrett Johnson is out there still. It is still the first day of free agency, and we still have the draft where we can draft Adam Carriker. Getting Nate Clements, and Michael Lewis on the first day. Mike Nolan gets an A. Nate Clements, Shantee Spencer, Walt Harris, Mark Roman, Michael Lewis, and Keith Lewis this can be the most indimating secondary in the NFL who all players that like to stick the receivers. We still got a chance to sign Donte Stallworth as well.
Posted By: Jake (02/03/2007 6:46:42 PM)
Comment: I Love the Clements signing! You can never overpay for a quality corner because they are so rare and he is the real deal! I think the 49ers should pass on Thomas and focus on Joey Porter. He brings leadership, will sign for less money, and be out to prove that he still has a lot of game and I think he does. Plus he fits nicely into the 3-4! The 49ers should call Detroit about the #2 pick and try to move up and get Calvin Johnson. He is a rare talent and reminds me a lot of Owens without the baggage. I don't think the 49ers would have to give up the farm to move up either. Probably swapping 1st round picks, giving up a 3rd, and maybe throwing in Kwame Harris would get it done! The 49ers should also look at David Carr as a backup to Alex Smith. It never hurt to have Steve Young behind Joe Montana and I think Carr still has a lot to offer and he is still young. He is in a bad situation similar to Steve Young in Tampa.
Posted By: oneniner (02/03/2007 6:45:02 PM)
Comment: This was really just hype....Nolan has been knocking on Clements door since last yearr when he got franchised, We were first in line to get the first interview...I pray we get AD(PLEASE GOD)....Draft prediction =I think we are movin up to pick Branch or move down to pick 2 first rounders like we did last year, picking Carriker and Willis, FS (Merriweather) from miami in the secound round...the rest WR, OLine, DLine...etc
Posted By: Mike G. (02/03/2007 6:41:22 PM)
Comment: I love the move. This reminds me of 1994 when we signed Gary Plummer, Richard Dent, Ken Norton, Toi Cook, Bart Oates, Deion Sanders, and etc. I hoping we would have gotten Adalius Thomas, but getting a shutdown corner like Nate Clements who is also a big hitter, and another hitter in Michael Lewis to match up with out other hitters in the defensive secondary, the receivers in the NFC or in the west better watch out. If we can't sign AT that is fine that way, the money we would spend on him we can still sign Donte Stallworth, and Joey Porter along with the signing of Aubrayo Franklin this defense has the potential to be in the top 5. To me that is a great off season so far.

Comment: I like the move! We had to get at least AT or Clements! AT didn't even come here first and it looks like Nolan knew that AT didn't have the Niners at the top of his list. So he had to make sure that he locked up Nate b/f anyone else could. I figure that with the signing of Nate and Michael it would show AT that the Niners are serious about winning and he would want to be a part of a revamped, up and coming defense!

Comment: This is so exciting...
Clements (6-0, 209), a six-year veteran cornerback has started every game of his NFL career, racking up 23 interceptions during that stretch. A respected defender, Clements was named to the Pro Bowl in 2002 and 2004. He is considered one of the most exciting defensive backs in the league as demonstrated by the five interceptions and two punts he has returned for touchdowns in his career.
Clements was originally a first-round draft choice by the Bills out of Ohio State University. He was the 21st overall selection of the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft. Born in Shaker Heights (OH), Clements was a USA Today, Blue Chip Illustrated and Super Prep All-American selection at Shaker Heights (OH) High.
Also a six-year veteran, Lewis (6-1, 222) has earned an NFL reputation for being a tenacious and hard hitting defender, playing strong safety and contributing valuable time in a linebacker role in Philadelphia's dime package in 2006. The Eagles leading tackler in 2005, Lewis recorded a career best 2.0 sacks in 2006 and ranked fifth on the team with 87 tackles in 14 games.
Lewis was a second round draft pick from the University of Colorado in 2002. A mainstay at strong safety since his freshman year, Lewis twice won the school's Dave Jones Award for the most outstanding defensive player and the Hale Irwin Award for the most outstanding DB in his junior and senior seasons. He was born in Richmond, TX.

Comment: Although he will probably be long gone by #11, I think we can now eliminate LaRon Landry from our #1 pick possibilities with Clements and Lewis signing on.

Comment: ESPN said Thomas has agreed to sign with the Pats. Now let's go after Porter!
Posted By: alex (02/03/2007 6:12:30 PM)
Comment: I agree with the masses. We need a pass rush...if you watched any of the games last year, our interior and edge rush was the severe weakness of the team. Will Clements give rushers a second more? Maybe...but we needed five seconds more last year. No corner can give that...we need rushers, and Thomas was probably the best one in free agency. I'd have given Thomas $10 million a year if need be...

Comment: Any words on how the contracts are set to work out. I'm hearing 8 years for 80 million, which is a LOT of money. I know the salaries are inflated more with the rise, but I'm still curious as to how the contract is set-up.

Comment: Matt, based on what the Niners are signing Clements for, could they have pulled the trigger on both Clements and Thomas . . . if Thomas ever made it out of New England? Assuming Thomas would pull in about what Clements did that would have been roughly half of the Niners available cap space. It seems they could have done it if they had the chance. Totally bummed here. I wish only the worst for the Patriots.

Comment: If these Patriots rumors are true, then I am really suprised that Adalius isn't even going to meet with the Niners. If he doesn't want to be here then we I don't want him anyway. Besides, we've got the best player on the market anyways in Clements.
Posted By: Mr Lott (02/03/2007 5:34:58 PM)
Comment: Michael Lewis is a heck of an athlete who seems to be falling off the charts of late. Constantine was a weak link in the Eagles D so it's strange Lewis was sitting. I do know that Lewis was in the same freshman class as Donnie Strickland @ Univ of Colorado and they played in the secondary together. He may not hit as hard as Keith but he has much better range.

Comment: Mike-- per the ESPN Insider scouting report, he's very strong tackle to tackle and holding his own at the line of scrimmage, but tires easily and cannot be counted on for a pass rush. Basically, it sounds like he's a nice NT for the 3-4 for first down and running situations.

Comment: Read that for all practicality, this is really a 6 year 45M deal. That doesn't worry me. What they gave who is now the 3rd SS on the roster (Lewis) to sign today is what I'm worried about.
Is there any chance this wasn't the beer truck driving kick returning Michael Lewis?

Posted By: Grant - Melbourne, Australia (02/03/2007 4:43:21 PM)
Comment: Dont curse.. be excited. I was expecting 22-24 guaranteed over 5 or 6 years so spreading that over 8 is easy. Plus you have to realise that his base slaray in years 6-8 is likely going to be huge meaning the guy would be cut or restructured before those ever came along.
His deal will probably start at about 7 mill per for the first 5 or so years.
Dont stress out, with a big long contract like this there are heaps of ways for it to be structured appropraitely
Posted By: Mike (02/03/2007 4:38:41 PM)

Comment: Spencer, Roman, Lewis (either M or K), and Clements would = best secondary in NFC West, and in top 3 of entire NFC. It would have a ripple effect on the pass rush, too, because an extra half second is a lot of time for a pass rusher.

Sports that the agent for AT said that he is in the hospital for an outpatient procedure and that he will decide today which team to visit first. Does this match up with what you are hearing? It sounds like all of the rumors about him in The Bay and NE are both bogus. You've gotta love the first day of FA.

Posted By: AJ (02/03/2007 3:09:00 PM)
Comment: Matt - why don't the Niners go after Porter? He's just the same age as Thomas, plays in a 3-4, and will be much cheaper! They can sign Clements, Porter, and several other players if they don't have to put up top dollars just for one player
Posted By: redandgold (02/03/2007 3:07:03 PM)
Comment: sure, thomas may be being courted by the patriots and they have had recent success and all, they have a newer stadium, proven coach, proven QB, etc, but c'mon thomas don't you want to come play in NoCal with the sunny weather, not to mention an up and coming team that will be in super bowl in the next few years?? THis is where the 49er veterans and 49er alumni need to help court this guy....
Posted By: AJ (02/03/2007 3:06:50 PM)
Comment: According to John Clayton (Insider), the Pats will push hard to sign Thomas because they will probably lose Banta-Cain. They will offer him more money than originally reported because they need him

Comment: Niners, Jets, and Pats are the early participants for Thomas. Pats do not have ability to match Niner money but hope to lure him with SB hopes. Niners, Jets, Dallas and a couple others have made Joey porter inquiries. Scuttlebutt says the Adalius Thomas losers will go after Porter. Looks like Drew Bennett may be a Ram by the end of the day. Have you heard of and WRs on the horizon.

Posted By: marc (02/03/2007 2:18:52 PM)
Comment: we need clements badly. thomas is a must tho. we definitely needed a WR when we had AB now we definitely need to sign 2 WRs im thinking kevin curtis and donte stallworth.. we could use a safety. leonard davis would be amazing for our offense. of course the niners cant sign everybody but when u have a reported 38 million to throw around you can definitely sign 3 top 10 free agents. as for the draft, if we can make that trade with tampa (11th pick and later picks for the #3) then calvin is ours. raiders will take russell and detroit has either thomas/quinn. then we can get johnson and have a young and explosive offense.

Nate Clements, CB, Buffalo Bills: The Bills would love to keep him, but he's on his way out. The value is here, but he will cost a bunch) and Lewis the 3rd Safety and 48th overall (48. Michael Lewis, S, Philadelphia Eagles: He is a big hitter who was benched in 2006. But he has starting experience and he's only 26 years old).

Posted By: Jason (02/03/2007 1:34:25 PM)
Comment: The chances of moving up to the top 3 are nothing. They would have to trade 1,2,3 and maybe 1 or 2 next year. Too many holes. If they shore up CB and LB, they'll look at DL at #11 and maybe WR in round 2.
Posted By: Ted (02/03/2007 1:34:00 PM)
Comment: The Eagles let Lewis walk as he can't cover on passing plays. If you need an in-the-box type of run stopping safety, then he's your man. If you want a safety to play the run and the pass, then just know he's a liability on passing downs.

Comment: For those of you that are stating the Niners won't get AT or Clements because of their price, remember, we've got loads of cap space and a 23 million dollar signing bonus spread over 4 years is only 6 Mill a year. Throw in a few million as a salary and you're 'only' looking at ~ 9 million a year per player. We could easily afford Thomas and Clements.
For those saying you hope we don't 'over-pay', remember everyone is overpaying this off-season. I expect Clements to command no less than what Bailey signed for. Remember, Bailey was signed by Denver a couple of years ago. Inflation happens, even in the NFL!
Posted By: Jeremy Burns (02/03/2007 1:26:39 PM)
Comment: This suspense is killing me. If they are able to sign Clements, AT and Lewis, what would be the odds of packaging the 11th pick a third round and fourth round picks to try to get in the top 3 to take C. Johnson the wr out of Georgia tech?

You brought us joy with the Adams report.
Anyway, so, Smith Report next season? Derek and Alex? Or would lack the right vibe? The Harris report (Walt and Kwame) might work, but for some reason I feel a lot of it would just slip by Kwame.

Comment: Matt, it looks like we're going to have Nate Clements signed by the end of the day. As far as Michael Lewis, is it possible that the former Pro Bowler lost starting time to Considine because the Eagles knew they weren't going to re-sign him? He was named by TSN as one of the top 100 players in the NFL in 2005.

I think its a great signing. We need a solid group of CB's. We had a good secondary now its leaning towards great. and good does not win you championships!

According to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, free agent Nate Clements has been signed or will soon sign with the San Francisco 49ers. The report comes from Thomas Sorrell.
Any truth to this Matt?

Comment: James, from that perspective, it begins to make more sense. Which is why Leon Hall may be an attractive choice at the 11 spot if the Niners don't land Clements (LH was the one corner in college who shut down Calvin Johnson btw). Clements has both the talent and swagger to continue to be a star.

Comment: I'm sure Jarret Johnson is just Plan B in case the Patriots get Thomas. Nolan probably knows him .. I'm guessing he could come in and start at OLB, plus he's younger than Thomas so he has room to grow. Thomas has reached his peak, I think.

Comment: Sorry about that...
I wouldn't be upset if we signed Clements and drafted a CB 3rd or 4th round.

Comment: Any news on if Jaret Johnson is expected in town?
Posted By: Heath (02/03/2007 11:36:10 AM)
Comment: I read the 49ers were interested in Jarret Johnson as well. I wonder what he brings to the table that Marques Douglas doesn't. Just seems like a depth kind of player.

Comment: Clayton's reporting on ESPN that the Pats are making a serious run at Thomas, and that his plans visit to SF tomorrow have "hit a snag"... whatever that means.

Comment: Adam Schefter thinks we're going to go after Jarret Johnson from the Ravens. He's listed at 6'3 270 and is able to play linebacker and defensive end.

Comment: Actually Tully Banta Cain is From Sunnyvale, he went to Fremont High School.

Comment: Hi Matt, There is always something to be said about free agents who put some extra stock in getting the opportunity to play in front of friends and family close to home. If that is the case, other than Stallworth, who is from the Bay Area, Banta-Cain is from Mountain View. Joey Porter and Cato June aren't Bay Area products, but are from California - Bakersfield and Riverside respectively. Perhaps they would consider coming to the NIners. What do you think? Trajd.

Comment: Matt, any idea what the expectations are for Sopoaga? The Niners seemed pretty excited about him when they drafted him. I remember hearing that he was one of the strongest players in the entire Draft but a bit raw. Now that he's entering his third year, at 6'2" and 330lbs, any hope that he could be a solid starter at DT?

Comment: Don Banks (SI) confirming "contact" btw Thomas and SF/NE, with the Pats, according to Banks, SF's prime rival for AT. [ http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/don_banks/03/02/free.agency/?cnn=yes ]|| Too much noise & too many now-apparent suitors for Curtis (MIN, DET, JAX, ...), which will drive up his price. We liked Curtis as viable no.1 for 2nd tier money. Not at top dollar. || BUF released Eric Moulds, another 30-something WR || Hope SF does *not* bid up guys like Bennett, Stallworth or even Curtis (ixnay to Lelie). They'd be better off with the draft; maybe sign a just-released vet (e.g., Moulds or Horn) short-term as a no.4 + groom rooks.

Comment: Despite their excess of cap money, do you think the 49ers can afford to sign both Clements and Thomas? Do you think part of the reason that they released A. Bryant was because they feel good about either Drew Bennett or Donte Stallworth signing as well?

Comment: Hey Mike,
I know yours is opinion based, as is mine. IMO Spencer could be a #1 and is a very good #2. He battled an injury early last year, but started to re-gain his form at the end of the year. With Harris up their in age and IF we did/do sign Nate, I'd expect our starting corners to be Clements and Spencer (barring an injury or Harris out performing spencer in camp) In any case Spencer or Harris as the 3rd CB is a HUGE upgrade over Sammy D.

Comment: Matt- Keep the updates coming. Your coverage of the 49ers is fantastic. What FA WR would you guess is highest on the internal wish list?

Comment: Can anyone speak on the validity of the Nate Clements rumor(49erswebzone.com)? If this is in fact true, all I can say is YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
Posted By: Mike in SF (02/03/2007 10:15:41 AM)
Comment: Regarding Parker's comment above. Here's why adding clements could be a big deal. In last year's nickel defense, we has a below average #1 Corner (WH), an average #2 corner (SS), and a bad #3 corner (SD). With Clements, we have a good #1 corner, an above average #2 corner (WH) and a very good #3 corner (SS). The addition of one player and the redefining of roles turns 3 players rated as average or worse into 3 players at good or better.
I'll take it!

Comment: Could it be that plan A is: Nate Clements and a cheaper LB like Banta-Cain, and plan B is: Adalius Thomas and a cheaper CB like Nick Harper? I still can't fathom the Niners would sign both Clements and Thomas...although I can dream about it.
Posted By: James (02/03/2007 9:54:45 AM)
Comment: Parker, every team in our division has at least three solid WRs, which means we need at least three solid CBs. Plus Harris is getting older (despite his Pro Bowl season) and will probably be a nickel back eventually. Signing Clements would allow either Harris or Spencer to play in the slot, eliminating a huge defensive weakness there.

Comment: I frankly still don't get the Nate Clements pursuit. It's a smoke signal that either WHarris' fine season was a one year wonder or Shawntae is a bust. From my standpoint, we're set a corner and we have more critical needs a DE and LB, but someone feel free to enlighten me on Clements wearing red and gold.

Comment: So Matt, are you camped out at 4949 Centennial . . . if so, is there a buzz of excitement in the Building? For what ever reason I'm focused like a lazer-beam on what the Niners are doing with Free Agency and the Draft. I usually don't pay much attention. This year just feels different.

Comment: As I'm sure you know (via 49erswebzone) the team supposedly has signed or agreed with Clements on a contract with a 23M signing bonus. Any truth as far as you know?
