Quarterback Chris Weinke, 35, has been signed as the 49ers' backup for Saturday's game against the Bengals. Weinke will wear No. 17.
The club announced that seventh-year veteran was signed to take the roster spot opened when the club placed Alex Smith on injured reserve. Smith will have season-ending shoulder surgery this week.
Weinke (6-4, 232) was the Heisman Trophy winner as a senior at Florida State in 2000. He spent six seasons with the Panthers after being a fourth-round draft pick.
He has played in 27 NFL games with 19 starts and completed 373 pass attempts for 687 yards with 14 touchdown passes and 26 interceptions.
Weinke immediately was inserted into the starting lineup as a rookie and finished second in NFL history with 2,931 passing yards by a rookie, trailing only Peyton Manning of Indianapolis who threw for 3,793 yards in 1998.
Weinke will be the 49ers' backup quarterback on Saturday against the Bengals behind starter Shaun Hill. Trent Dilfer is out after sustaining a concussion Sunday against the Vikings.

Weinke will earn $35,000 a week while with the 49ers. (That is 1/17th of a $595,000 salary, which is the minimum for an NFL player with four to six credited seasons.)

Comment: Can som eone tell me where I can retrieve stats from individual games? Like, for example, the first 3 games of the season?

Comment: SactoBob, if I had a week to prepare him to START, I'd try Olson over Weinke, simply because why not?
But the only way either comes in a game is if Hill gets hurt, so it makes more sense to have a guy who's been around and won't be getting his first look at nfl speed in live game action. Why are we debating this anyway, though? Weinke is a warm body. He won't be here next year. Even money Olson won't be either. And we ain't winning anything, so who cares?

Comment: Nevyn, I'm thrilled the 9ers have Wienke. He can anchor their charity softball team. How much worse could Olson be as a back-up QB?

Comment: To be fair to Weinke, he didn't really slit time with DeAngelo. Williams lined up at QB in the shotgun on 7 occasions and each time they ran a keeper.

Comment: Christ, who did you expect? Are we gonna sign Peyton Manning to the practice squad? Are talented QBs walking the streets? The guy's a bandaid in case our 3rd-stringer goes down, or throws 4 INTs in a half.

Comment: FIRE NOLAN Matt this is another of the f'ed up moves that the clueless coach has made. Do you know who else we worked out?

Comment: This means nothing except that you've got to have someone to take the snaps if Hill's busted finger gets twisted too much. Weinke gets his 35K a game and hopefully Hill doesn't get destroyed between now and the end of the season. Just accept it as the ugly end to an ugly season.

Comment: Chris Weinke played professional baseball six years after high school. He reached triple A level, but then he went to Forida State as on "old" freshman.

Comment: 14 TDs, 26 Ints, QB rating, 61.4 rating, and 35 years old. The quintessential Nolan guy. Does he give the 9ers the best chance to win?

Comment: Interesting perspective from Rotoworld: "49ers signed QB Chris Weinke, formerly of the Panthers.
They opted for Weinke, 35, over practice squad QB Drew Olson to back up Shaun Hill until Trent Dilfer (head) gets healthy. Weinke hasn't thrown an NFL pass since splitting time with DeAngelo Williams in Carolina's Week 16 game last year. He shared snaps from center with Williams, a running back." ----- Don't we already have a RB that can play QB? Another great pickup!
